Outside the Binary: Chineye Emeghara’s STEAM Scholarship
I have had a long and abiding passion for computers, even before I could walk. Since then, I have continued to develop and troubleshoot on computers. A computer science program will equip me with the advanced academic knowledge and skills to develop more projects and further my career in Software development.
As a gifted and talented student, my high school experience was primarily defined by boredom. Beyond the occasional problematic incident during English, my usual day consisted of 6 hours of waiting and at most one hour of working my way through schoolwork I could have completed without issue half a decade prior.
I was the child who won first place in the Accelerated Reader program back during elementary school, solely due to not having anything else to do. I read the Science textbook through twice, just because there was nothing left. I moved to reading online after the libraries ran out of books to read, and only on a system that grew faster than I could read could my quest finally settle.
I taught myself to program in middle school out of boredom, At age 12, I mastered the foundations of calculus with what I found online, learned quantum mechanics and relativity while waiting at home until I could wait through school yet again. I spent my days waiting for the opportunity to wait yet again; Not even the summer was a reprieve, my last friend had moved away years ago, and I was left with nothing else to do but fill the time I spent waiting. I learned during my wait, created kindling few others could. Perhaps there is something new, something grand, something world changing to discover. it may be, whatever may lie at the end of the wick, don't you think reigniting this flame would be worth a chance?
Once I told my mom that I wanted to be the father of the Grand Unified Theory. Since then, I have continued my dreams of studying math and developing software. I intend to pursue further projects and other dreams that may arise during my course of study.
While all my life's goals are not yet fully designed or developed. I want to create programs that automate mundane tasks and facilitate routine activities for everyone, especially people with disabilities. I am currently working on three projects: Three-dimensional Voxel engine for game building, gravity simulations, and Einstein's relativity simulations. These areas I'm currently focusing on will eventually be realized in daily tasks, gaming, science, industry, or commerce.
Soon after my parents migrated to the US, my mom went completely blind and suffered through long term rehabilitation and unemployment. By the time she found a paying job, our family was severely hampered by debt. Mom’s disability has limited the kinds of job opportunities available to her, and Dad has had to be present for transport and assistance with my sibling at home. His options are limited as well, and this scholarship would help to ensure that I can attend school.
