My ultimate passion are animal behavior and welfare. I am a good candidate for this scholarship because I am making active choices toward my future goals. That involves owning a dog boarding business called Carter's K-9 LLC. Along with being a student I am able to run a successful business and maintain a moderate gpa.

Growing up in the heart of Dallas Texas there were not many positive outlets. The beauty was my best friend, Frank an old grumpy pug with so much personality. He was my pride and joy and the highlight of my afternoon when coming home from school. Before I had a concept of what depression and anxiety were, he was my emotional support dog and outlet to all my emotions. From that moment forward I have owned a dog every year and even having multiple dogs at once. Experiences with Frank taught me how special and valuable a companion animal could be.
Luckily, in 2018 I came across a site on ROVER that changed my life forever. It is an online marketplace for people to buy and sell pet care services including pet sitting, dog boarding, and dog walking. I could not believe what I was seeing, a business caring for companion animals which is something I had been doing for as long as I could remember! Of course, I immediately applied and was accepted. The bookings came in quickly, and I was servicing more dogs a month than I ever imagined possible. This was the first time I saw myself in a career being able to do something that I genuinely love. After a year of providing services on ROVER and getting much positive feedback, I decided to start my own business. January 1, 2019, Carter's K-9 LLC was born, a business that offers in-home dog boarding services. We offer services such as boarding, training, daycare, pooch parties, and more. While quitting ROVER was a huge risk, more success than anticipated has come from our business. In August of 2020, Carter's K9 had its first publication in Insite Magazine and has been featured in Voyage Dallas and on KAGS TV.
Although I have started a business before graduating, I still have future dreams and goals that I would like to pursue. My ultimate goal is to achieve a master’s degree in Animal Behavior with an emphasis on welfare, so I can travel the world to help people change the unwanted behaviors of their pets, better understand their animals, and give companion animals and their owners a stress-free life. I believe that most time owners surrender their animals when they are not sure how to communicate their wants and needs in a way that an animal can understand. Currently, I am a sophomore at Texas A&M University in College Station studying Animal Science with minors in Agricultural Communications and Journalism and Agribusiness Entrepreneurship. Over the semesters of being a college student, I have grown and learned more things about myself and the career I would like to have. I made the decision and am in the process of changing my major to Agricultural Communications with a minor in Agribusiness Entrepreneurship. I feel as though these changes will give me the tools to better communicate with customers and the world around me in the future while teaching me how to be a successful business owner. While the journey has just begun I am eager for my future aspirations in life.
