Abu Omar Halal Scholarship
WinnerMy name is Angela Otuokere and I am a first-generation senior at the University of Texas at San Antonio, majoring in Marketing. From the moment I began college, I always knew that I wanted to pursue Marketing as it perfectly aligned with my passions of creativity, strategy, and connecting with people. I was originally a pre-med major, yet I pondered daily about the realities of what my college journey would look like if I took on the chance of changing my major to something that I truly loved. Deep down, I knew I would be pursuing the career path that allowed me to reshape the way that we perceive media and highlight marginalized voices and stories that aren’t heard.
Once I switched my major to Marketing, the first thing that I began to do was find a community with like-minded individuals who also shared the common goal of becoming strong professionals in the field. The American Marketing Association became a beacon in my college experience where I have been able to connect, learn, and grow in the profession I am pursuing. Through my various leadership positions in the organization, including becoming the President, I was able to coordinate guest speaker events from influential marketing leaders, execute impactful professional development workshops, and advocate for the awareness of increasing diversity within the marketing field.
Currently, black marketers make up about 7.2% of the marketing industry. I am striving every day to continue to increase that percentage by inspiring change and sparking the narrative. I hope to showcase a positive representation of minorities in marketing and increase diversity in the field. By investing in my education, this scholarship will not only enable me to complete my degree but also empower me to be a catalyst for change. I am passionate about being a trailblazer for future generations of aspiring marketers from underrepresented backgrounds. Through my journey, I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams fearlessly, despite financial constraints, and to showcase the transformative power of education.
Through my marketing studies, I envision creating campaigns that not only promote services and products but also advocate for social change. My mission is to utilize my skills to amplify the voices of unheard communities, fostering inclusivity and representation within the marketing industry. My career goal is to work with organizations that prioritize diversity and inclusion, actively contributing to a paradigm shift in the marketing sector.
Hyacinth Malcolm Memorial Scholarship
Since I can remember, the crucial importance of education has always been instilled in me. My parents, who migrated from Nigeria, sacrificed everything when they moved to America to pave the way for me to achieve greater opportunities for my future. My mother had her own dreams of pursuing higher education and gaining her degree, yet she had to put her aspirations aside to raise my family so that we could have the chance to be successful. Witnessing my parents' tenacity and dedication to see me pursue my goals through school tremendously sparked a passion and commitment within myself to strive for the very best to accomplish academic excellence.
Being a first-generation college student, I truly faced adversity and experienced hardships. Receiving the Hyacinth Malcolm Scholarship will allow me to continue striving for the aspirations of obtaining my degree to become a marketing professional in the entertainment and media field. As the current President of the American Marketing Association at my university, my philosophy and mission are built on the foundation of showcasing a positive representation of my community in marketing.
Having the opportunity to The Hyacinth Malcolm Scholarship will alleviate the financial burdens associated with pursuing higher education, allowing me to focus more on my studies and actively engage in my college experience. It will serve as an affirmation that others are supporting me in my path and empower me to continue to engage in internships and community service that will enrich my overall educational journey and prepare me to make a meaningful contribution to society.
The Hyacinth Malcolm Scholarship is an investment in the transformative power of education, a recognition of the resilience embedded in my journey, and a commitment to honoring the legacy of a remarkable advocate for learning. With this scholarship, I am not only pursuing my educational aspirations but also continuing a legacy of strength, determination, and belief in the profound impact of education on the lives it touches.
In the intricate tapestry of my life, the threads of education have been woven by the hands of resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief in the transformative power of learning. Education is an open door to opportunities that will last a lifetime. It is a testament to changing people's lives for the better. It has changed my life and will continue to do so. It is with great gratitude and aspiration that I apply for the Hyacinth Malcolm Scholarship, an opportunity that not only aligns with my dreams but resonates deeply with the ethos of my upbringing.
Future Black Leaders Scholarship
Acts of service has been a tremendous element in my life over the past four years. Being the secretary of the National Honor Society of my high school gave me the privilege and opportunity to connect with many community organizations for volunteer experiences.
The San Antonio Food Bank is an organization that I have greatly devoted my time to. Packaging and organizing food for thousands of families that are in need is something that I have found touching to my purpose. Leading this community service was something that I truly honor.
I am proudly a first-generation American-born citizen. I have three older siblings who are also pursuing higher education as well. My parents have immensely worked hard throughout their life for the sole purpose of my siblings and I to have a better future. Providing for my three siblings and I can be a struggle from time to time. This scholarship would greatly impacted my life as it would provide more security to allow myself to transfer from my community college to a four-year university. Going to a four-year university would open many opportunities for my future degree in Marketing.
In 2024, when I graduate from college, I aspire to become a Marketing manager of a company within the music or fashion industry. Furthermore, I'd also like to be on the Marketing team of Black-owned start-up companies to help them grow and expand. It would be an honor to greatly uplift and support Black-owned companies as it also supports Black communities as well.
