Growing up in a family plagued by chronic diseases like diabetes, alcoholism, and mental health issues, I witnessed firsthand the struggles and suffering that often accompany these ailments. The lack of adequate healthcare and financial constraints only exacerbated the situation, leading to early and unnecessary deaths. These experiences have deeply influenced my career aspirations and my desire to make a difference in the field of nursing. One of the most impactful experiences that shaped my career path was watching my father struggle after he broke his back when I was 10 years old. The pain and healing process were excruciating, and he was unable to work for years. The healthcare he received was inadequate, and I saw firsthand the limitations of the system. Watching my father never fully recover, struggle with pain, and accept that this was his new life was a profound moment for me. It was the first experience that pushed me to want to improve outcomes for people in hospitals. My passion for nursing was further ignited by my experiences working on a suicide hotline. Over the years, I have spoken to countless individuals who are struggling with mental health issues such as depression, addiction, and suicidality. Many of these individuals cannot afford the support they need, and it has been heartbreaking to see them suffer in silence. My work on the hotline has taught me the importance of providing compassionate and non-judgmental support to those in need. In addition to my work on the suicide hotline, I have also had the opportunity to work with youth in San Francisco, giving presentations on suicide prevention and talking to students about their mental health struggles. These experiences have further reinforced my desire to work on the front lines of support, where I can use my personal experiences and my experiences supporting others to make a meaningful impact. As a nurse, I hope to bring a human and caring perspective to patient care. I want to provide patients with the support they need, whether it's through education, emotional support, or advocacy. I believe that by using my own experiences and my experiences supporting others, I can make a difference in the lives of those in need. In conclusion, my journey into nursing has been shaped by my personal experiences and my experiences supporting others. I am passionate about making a difference in the lives of those struggling with chronic diseases and mental health issues, and I am excited to pursue a career in nursing where I can use my experiences to provide compassionate and holistic care.

Title: A Journey of Compassion: My Path to Becoming a Registered Nurse Introduction: From an early age, I was exposed to the harsh realities of chronic diseases like cancer, heart attacks, and diabetes. My family bore the brunt of these illnesses, and their struggles with inadequate healthcare and support due to financial constraints left an indelible mark on me. Witnessing their pain and the systemic barriers they faced ignited a fire within me—a desire to be part of a profession that could provide compassionate care and support to individuals facing similar challenges. Academic Journey: My academic journey has been a pivotal part of my evolution as a prospective nurse. At San Francisco State University (SFSU), I chose to major in health education, with a focus on public health and prevention. This decision was driven by my desire to address health disparities and promote wellness in communities. My coursework at SFSU provided me with a comprehensive understanding of health determinants, evidence-based interventions, and community health strategies. I learned to critically analyze health issues and develop effective solutions, laying a strong foundation for my future career in nursing. Experiences at San Francisco Suicide Prevention Hotline: Working at the San Francisco Suicide Prevention hotline has been a profound and transformative experience. As a hotline volunteer, I have engaged in countless conversations with individuals in crisis. These conversations have taught me the importance of active listening, empathy, and non-judgmental support. I have learned to navigate complex emotions and provide comfort to those in distress. This experience has honed my communication skills and deepened my understanding of human suffering and resilience. It has also reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate care to individuals in need. Work with Youth: My work with youth on the hotline and through presentations in schools has been equally impactful. As a youth outreach coordinator, my main role was to outreach to schools and give suicide prevention presentations in San Francisco. I have reached over 40,000 students and given over 700 presentations. Through these interactions, I have developed my conversation skills in high-stress situations. I have learned to build rapport, establish trust, and provide guidance to young individuals navigating difficult circumstances. This experience has strengthened my resolve to support vulnerable populations and advocate for their well-being. Internship at Kaiser: My internship at Kaiser as a health education intern has provided me with valuable insights into the impact of support beyond the diagnosis for patients with chronic conditions. I supported classes that aimed to motivate behavioral change, and I witnessed firsthand how such support can greatly benefit patients in the long run. This experience has reinforced my belief in the importance of holistic care and the role of nurses in providing ongoing support and education to patients. Personal Experience with Chronic Pain: Growing up, I also witnessed the impact of chronic pain on my father. He broke his back on the job, and the years of healing and inadequate care took a toll on his physical and mental well-being. The chronic pain became a constant companion, dragging him down into a cycle of depression and alcoholism. The lack of proper support and care through this process contributed to the deterioration of his health and eventually led to my parents' divorce. This personal experience has further fueled my passion for nursing, as I have seen firsthand the importance of compassionate care and support for individuals dealing with chronic conditions. Specific Conversation at the Suicide Hotline: One particular conversation during my time at the San Francisco Suicide Prevention hotline stands out in my memory. I spoke with a first-time caller, a man who initially thought his problems were inadequate and didn't want to waste the hotline's time. After assuring him that I would love to talk to him, we dove deep into his needs, issues, and problems. Going into the call, he was depressed, mopey, and almost unwilling to dive into his real issues. Seeing this, I broke the ice with him by relating to his passions around welding, where he opened up completely. After our 20-minute conversation on the hotline, he asked if it would be okay if he called again and spoke to me. I was flattered but had to let him know that he would most likely speak to a different counselor, but that they are all great for their own reasons. This call taught me that although people are closed off, when they feel heard no matter the person, they will open up, and usually have so much they want to say. Conclusion: As I pursue my journey to become a registered nurse (RN), I am filled with a sense of purpose and dedication. My experiences, both academic and personal, have shaped me into a compassionate and empathetic individual. I am committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care and to advocating for the needs of my patients. I believe that nursing is not just a profession but a calling—a calling to make a positive impact on the lives of others, to be a source of comfort and support in times of need. I am excited to contribute to the health and well-being of individuals and communities.
