Innovators of Color in STEM Scholarship
I have chosen to pursue a degree in STEM because I became passionate about technology during my junior year of high school after taking AP Computer Science Principles. I enjoyed programming and learning about different software so much that I started practicing cybersecurity on CyberStart in my free time. After doing research into cybersecurity, I discovered the high demand for information security analysts. This solidified my decision to pursue a career in STEM.
As a rising junior at Old Dominion University, majoring in Information Technology, I am determined to make a significant impact in the STEM field. My interest in cybersecurity has only grown stronger through my studies, and I am committed to using my skills to prevent data breaches, especially in government sectors. I hope to work for the government after graduating, where I can contribute to protecting sensitive information and ensuring national security. Data breaches have become commonplace and happen daily I aim to prevent such attacks from stealing sensitive data that can cost the government millions and put millions at risk of identity fraud, phishing attacks, or worse a remote attack if their IP address is leaked. Or they could be attacked with a vulnerability that a hacker can find from previous data breaches.
Being a Hispanic man in STEM, I understand the importance of diversity and representation. There are not many people of color in this field, and I want to change that. I want to be a role model for other young people of color who are interested in technology but might not see themselves represented. By succeeding in my career, I hope to inspire others to pursue their passions in STEM, showing them that they too can make a difference.
My journey so far has been driven by a genuine love for technology and a desire to protect valuable information. With a high school GPA of 3.6 and a college GPA of 3.52, I have worked hard to achieve my academic goals. I am committed to continuing this effort and making a positive impact in the STEM field. I also have a 3.8 gpa in all of my cybersecurity classes so faro
In conclusion, my passion for technology and cybersecurity, demand for cybersecurity, career opportunities, combined with my dedication to representing people of color in STEM, drives my pursuit of a degree in this field. I am excited about the future and the opportunities to make a meaningful difference. Thank you for considering my application for this scholarship.
STEAM Generator Scholarship
My name is Anthony Garcia Urena, and I am a rising junior at Old Dominion University, majoring in Technology and IT/Information Technology. As a second-generation immigrant, my journey into higher education has been both hopeful and challenging. My parents moved here to give me a better future, but navigating the college system has been tough.
One of my main concerns about entering higher education as an outsider is not knowing the inner workings of the system. For example, I did not know about FAFSA until my school counselor told me during my senior year of high school. This lack of information made me realize how much I needed to learn to maximize my benefits within the system. My high school GPA was 3.6, and my college GPA is currently 3.5, but I always felt like I was playing catch-up. Some of my hopes were to earn a high paying job and internships while in college to build my resume and skills.
Being a second-generation immigrant has left me with little knowledge of how colleges work. My parents did not attend college here, so they could not guide me through the process. This experience has made me more determined to succeed and help others in similar situations. My future goals include applying for more scholarships and academic programs to support my studies. I also want to teach my children and friends everything I have learned about higher education, whether they are interested in attending a university or community college.
I am passionate about technology and IT, and I believe that my background gives me a unique perspective in this field. My Hispanic heritage has taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. These values drive me to overcome any obstacles in my path. I am committed to making the most of my education and using my knowledge to help others. I applied the lessons I have learned as a Hispanic to do well in college like selecting classes months before the next semester so I can have a guaranteed seat in class, contacting my professors, doing my FASFA before the state priority deadline, and using MOS a scholarship search engine app to find scholarships like these.
In conclusion, my experience as a second-generation immigrant has shaped my educational journey and future goals. I hope to continue learning and growing, not just for myself but for those who come after me. Thank you for considering my application for the STEAM generator scholarship.
