I am a high school senior who aspires to pursue a degree in nursing. My goal throughout high school has been to maintain the top position in my class and ultimately graduate as valedictorian. Firstly, I am hopeful I can complete my BSN nursing program in the accelerated track and maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout the rigorous program. Passing the NCLEX examination would be the next step I take to further my career, as it marks the beginning of my professional journey as a registered nurse. I initially aspired to specialize in labor and delivery. This role aligns with my passion for supporting women during a transformative and vulnerable time in their lives. I have also considered taking the path of being a pediatric nurse because I would label myself as a positive, compassionate individual who loves children. Looking ahead, I have contemplated furthering my education to pursue a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) specialization.

Entering the nursing field has always been a dream of mine. Thirteen years ago, my little brother was born, one of my life's scariest moments. He had a tough time right from the start, with complications that kept him in the NICU for weeks, fighting to breathe. I was only four years old, and it was confusing not being able to see him except in pictures on a phone.
But amid all that fear and uncertainty was this amazing NICU nurse. She was like a ray of sunshine in a storm. She showed kindness and empathy that I did not know was possible. She always talked to my family and me despite everything in the NICU. Her words of encouragement and support made a huge difference.
She did not just care for my brother; she reached out to us, explaining things in a way that even a four-year-old could understand. She was not just doing a job; she was a beacon of hope, demonstrating what genuine compassion and dedication look like.
Looking back on that time, I realize how much she impacted me. Her approach to nursing was about more than just medical procedures; it was about human connection, emotional support, and an unwavering commitment to those in her care. It made me want to be like her, to make a difference in people's lives the way she did for us.
Until eight months ago, I was determined to pursue the NICU specialty; however, now, the labor and delivery floor is the place for me. I was sixteen when I discovered my life would change drastically: I would be a mother. Throughout my entire pregnancy, I was labeled as "high-risk" because of my young age and my heart condition, and I faced numerous health problems: hypertension, hypoglycemia, and, eventually, preeclampsia, which also led to posteclampsia. I had countless trips to the emergency room because of my blood pressure.
January 6, 2024, marked one of my most beautiful and scariest days. I entered the hospital, at thirty-six weeks and five days pregnant, with an alarmingly high blood pressure. I was shortly induced and set to deliver my daughter. I was terrified.
The nurse who cared for me and my soon-to-be newborn was an angel from above. Every step of the way, she never stopped encouraging and informing me how proud she was of me. She always provided me with everything I needed and wanted. Some may say she was doing her job, but I have never experienced first-hand an individual so selfless and caring for me as my kind-hearted labor and delivery nurse.
I delivered my daughter on January 7, 2024, at 2:57 A.M. Unfortunately, my doctor was slightly late to the delivery of my daughter, but thankfully, this nurse was present. She delivered my first daughter. I ended up staying five extra days in the hospital to regulate my blood pressure because I developed post-eclampsia. This nurse made it a point to visit me every day that she was working while I was still admitted.
She displayed a rare blend of kindness and selflessness that left a lasting impression on me. During my most vulnerable moments as a teen mother, she offered unwavering encouragement and support, ensuring that I never felt uncomfortable or judged. Her compassionate care eased me through a challenging time and inspired me to pursue a labor and delivery nursing career. I now desire to provide the same level of empathy and reassurance to others in need, and I hope and pray I can impact a mother's life the way this sweet lady did mine.
