Bio

My name is Annika and my biggest accomplishment is navigating and overcoming a chronic illness during my high school years. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, POTS, a chronic illness, I came face to face with at the end of 8th grade through 11th grade, shaped the person I am today. Healing through an illness has broadened my perspective on life and taught me to lean into my passions while seeing the joy and opportunities in everything. I strive to continue to work towards my goals and ambitions, put my best foot forward, stay connected in my community through volunteering, and spread positivity. These principles are shown in my personal blog page, The Lifestyle Mile, where I share my story and inspire others to live their best life. I am a high achieving student who received high honor roll and a journalism honors award, I am a member of The National Honor Society and The Yearbook Club, I work part-time at a local French restaurant as a hostess, I lead an independent newborn foster box service project and received the Ella Kids Helping Kids award on behalf of DCF and the state of Massachusetts for my service, I continue to volunteer in my community, and I am an organized senior motivated to achieve greatness.

John F. Puffer, Sr. Smile Scholarship
I organized an independent service project that provided emergency boxes including clothing, diapers, wipes, bottles, pacifiers, formula, and more to foster families in our community. With the donations I received, I created 40 boxes and connected with my community in many ways while gaining volunteer and community experience, knowledge, and organization and leadership skills along the way. When families are called to foster a newborn, it is usually on short notice. They often don’t have the supplies necessary to care for a baby. When I heard about this need, I knew this was how I could give back. Taking the initiative, I created nine appealing collection boxes and placed them at local libraries, town halls, churches, and more. The number of donated supplies and cash donations was positively overwhelming and I was overjoyed. I retrieved the items weekly and after the donation period concluded, I sorted and packed the items into individual boxes. The remaining cash donations were used to supplement items. The final emergency boxes were provided to the local Department of Children and Family Services and the Pediatric Unit at Cape Cod Hospital to be given out as needed. Upon dropping them off, I was greeted with hands of gratitude. Leading an independent service project has taught me to look out for those in need. Seeing my local area come together for a good cause inspired me deeply. My service project provided me with a solid foundation for the importance of community in my life, keeping a determined work ethic, staying involved, and strengthening my leadership skills. I was also awarded the Ella Kids Helping Kids Award on behalf of the state of Massachusetts and DCF for my outstanding service work. Knowing that I can make a difference motivates me to continue keeping service to others as a priority in my life going forward. I continue to volunteer regularly in my community at local events, endeavors, initiatives, and fundraisers such as volunteering my time and efforts at Cape Cod Hospital support groups, the Giving Tree event, the Cape Cod Foster Closet, and many more. Throughout my academic experience, volunteering in my community, working part-time, and overcoming illness, I have grown wiser and stronger as a person. Academically, I attend in-person school but also take homeschooled courses, making me a unique dual-enrolled student. I have mastered the skills of balancing my school schedule while accomplishing my personal goals. Being a hostess at an exquisite local French restaurant teaches me how to accommodate different personalities as I must project a sincere and positive attitude in a bustling environment. I strive to do my very best in everything I do while showing complete respect, positivity, and responsibility. I am a member of The Yearbook Club and The National Honor Society and received a high honor roll and journalism honor award as recognition for my academic excellence. My story is one of problem-solving and adapting through experience. “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” (George Santayana). I believe we gain confidence in decision-making by paying attention to history, learning from it, respecting it, and making better choices going forward. This allows us to be open to opportunities and have some control over our own journeys. As a motivated learner, I strive to use my decision-making skills to leave a positive influence on the world around me and be the best version of myself. History education is at the forefront of my interests with the principle of evolving from the past and applying that knowledge to new experiences. My health journey closely relates to this ideology as an individual who overcame a chronic illness, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) I faced in my 8th-grade year through 11th grade. Throughout my POTS experience, I tried many different ways to get better in the first year of my illness through traditional medicine as I saw a variety of specialist doctors with standard treatment plans. I gained new knowledge along the way as I struggled to get healthy. I began exposing myself to the world of natural healing and experimented with a healthy diet, exercise, and craniosacral therapy. I started to gain confidence with each alternative therapy that I decided to try as I saw improvement. With consistency over time, my body returned to its optimal state of feeling well and supported. I noticed when I didn’t practice this routine of healthy living, I felt worse, which affected my functionality. By recognizing these patterns, I learned that by remaining in a cycle of nourishing my body, I would feel good and flourish daily. Learning from the past helped me make better decisions in my future. With these lessons and improvements, I have the energy to achieve many of my goals. Healing through an illness has broadened my perspective on life and taught me to lean into my passions while seeing the joy and opportunities in everything. I strive to continue to work towards my ambitions, put my best foot forward, stay connected in my community through volunteering, and spread positivity.
