Bio

I hope to help change the world one mother at a time. I will pursue a career in obstetric and gynecological sonography with a certification in fetal echocardiology. My desire for this career stems from having an incredibly unstable childhood and wanting to change this narrative for others. I want to be active in my community and help others live their lives to the fullest. I have moved 50 times within three states and two continents, so finances have always been an issue. I want to be able to devote myself fully to my studies without the overwhelming weight of major debt, which is why I am a great candidate for your scholarship. I hope to aid in the creation of healthy families and communities everywhere so that people are uplifted, inspired to make a positive impact through their own careers, and motivated to spread joy within their community. I know that your scholarship will help me achieve my goals.

Through the highs and lows of my educational career there's been one person who showed unconditional support throughout it all, my grandmother. When I was about 8 years old I moved with just my mother to Kona Hawaii from southern California. Life was beautiful and simple here, from the tranquility of eating lunch by the ocean to the thrill of swimming through water-filled lava tubes, it was pure and lovely. Then after about a year, at 9 years old we moved to South Korea, this was extremely hard on me since I had so much back home and we'd already moved a lot. It seemed like my mom had taken me away from my family, my support. Though I was scared, my grandma got me into a good school and I was there from 4th grade until the end of 8th. If it weren't for her I don't know what I would have done. It was just me and my mom in a foreign country, sometimes we'd have $0 so we didn't have food at home, my grandma paid for school lunches and tuition. She made me feel accomplished when I got a good grade, she never was angry or unkind. Even when I failed she never made me feel ashamed. She always said "Oh well" (it's her favorite phrase) and I'd learn from it and move on. Even from 10,000 miles away, I could feel her love. She's my backbone, I was never scared of being deported because I knew she would take care of the plane tickets. She radiates generosity. Besides the fact that she paid me through school in Korea, she took care of all aspects of me. Due to Covid, we had to move back to California in 2020, I had just started to appreciate Korea and all I had and now this was being taken away, deja vu but not in a good way. I had high school planned out and what I wanted to achieve but it was time to improvise. We moved back to California in November and it was hard but I was with family and I was making friends! We lived with my grandmother and she once again made sure I was in school, well-fed, dressed, etc. My mother didn't have a job for those 2years and her mental health started declining again. Even through that, I didn't worry because I knew I was safe with my grandmother. After I'd made friends and found my community, she'd take me to events, we'd go to amusement parks, shared churros, life seemed stable and I'd established roots. I had a loving friend group, grades were up, I was physically and emotionally healthy, life wasn't perfect but it was good. Can you guess what happened? My mother decided we should move to southeast Missouri, Sikeston to be exact. Now I've moved 48 times so far and this one really put it all into perspective. I've decided that I will not be bitter about this and instead will take advantage of any opportunities I'm given. Life throws unexpected and frankly, rude things at you and I'm not going to sit there and wallow in self-pity just because of the hand I've been dealt. My grandmother was raised by a single mother, low-income, not great circumstances and I think she turned out great, so what's stopping me from accomplishing my academic dreams? I am the only thing standing in my way and thanks to my grandmother I've realized that. She is my inspiration and I don't know where I'd be today without her support and guidance.
