Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
would like to highlight Chappell Roan as a significant source of inspiration for me, especially as a fellow "Midwestern Princess." Her influence on contemporary pop music is truly substantial, serving as a compelling emblem of inspiration for numerous individuals who resonate with her expressive and thought-provoking content.
In a “Vox” interview, Chappell Roan mentioned that "It takes seven years to be an overnight success." She has worked tremendously hard to reach where she is today. Before the release of her album "Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess," she vowed that if the album failed, she would give up on music. After years of hard work, the album achieved global success. Her story is an inspiration to many young artists.
Just a few years ago, it would have been entirely unbelievable to see an openly queer, female pop artist top the world charts with an album largely referencing the trials and tribulations of young love and heartbreak as a queer person. Pop music has been largely stagnant, characterized by the same few artists, topics, and rhythms. However, today's pop music is experiencing a renaissance with artists such as Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Charlie XCX, and many others revitalizing the genre.
Chappell Roan has made significant artistic contributions and has had an inspirational impact on people from diverse backgrounds. It would be wonderful to see her continue to create and inspire many more individuals. Her 80s-inspired melodies and thought-provoking lyrics have been major inspirations and have made me a more confident person.
Mental Health Empowerment Scholarship
It is essential for both my personal and academic lives that I put my mental health first. I can focus more clearly, retain material better, and participate positively in my academics if I take care of myself. I think that putting my mental health first also benefits my connections with other people and my general well-being. Achieving financial or academic objectives would be nearly impossible without making self-care and mindfulness a priority. I frequently have feelings of overload and burnout when I disregard my mental health, which has a detrimental effect on my ability to concentrate and do well in school. Setting self-care as a top priority also helps me to better handle stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
I've had confidence and self-image issues for several years, which have affected both my personal and professional relationships and goals. I now have a stronger awareness of the value of self-care and mental health in overcoming life's obstacles because of self-reflection. I'm inspired by this experience to work in the field of mental health advocacy and assistance because I think it can help de-stigmatize mental health conditions and encourage self-love. It has also taught me the importance of empathy and compassion in forming deep relationships with people who are going through comparable difficulties. My decision-making process is based on empathy because I want to be able to comprehend and assist people on their path to mental well-being.
Prioritizing my mental health will enable me to face obstacles with flexibility and resilience, which will eventually increase my success in all spheres of my life. I regularly practice self-care, which includes going to the gym regularly, being attentive and relaxing, and asking friends and family for help when I need it. I also prioritize stress-relieving and joyful activities and make sure to take breaks from them. By implementing these self-care techniques into my everyday routine, I am motivated to give my mental health priority and strike a balance between my academic goals and personal well-being. I have to keep in mind that taking care of myself is not selfish but rather essential to preserving my general well-being. I am better able to face the obstacles I face when I take care of myself.
This experience has also made me realize how important it is to be vulnerable and open with people to build genuine relationships. I want to make this a priority in both my personal and professional lives. I'm dedicated to providing a secure, accepting environment where people can talk about their experiences and ask for support without worrying about being stigmatized. Through attentive listening and assisting, I aim to foster a more sympathetic and cognizant community concerning mental health. I've discovered the value of empathy and compassion in assisting others in overcoming mental health obstacles as a result of my experiences and personal development. I firmly believe that we can dismantle barriers and foster an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels heard and respected by sharing our experiences and providing sincere support.

Novitas Diverse Voices Scholarship
Diverse voices in public relations hold immense power to shape public narratives by bringing different perspectives and experiences into the discussion. This diversity ensures that an inclusive range of voices is heard and represented in the media, leading to more inclusive and accurate portrayals of various communities and issues. Moreover, diverse voices can challenge stereotypes and biases, ultimately leading to a more nuanced and balanced understanding of complex issues within society. Public relations professionals can foster a more informed and empathetic public discourse by incorporating a variety of viewpoints. This shift can lead to greater understanding and cooperation among different groups, ultimately contributing to a more cohesive and harmonious society.
Activists and advocates for social movements have shaped public narratives through media, protest, and advocacy, sparking necessary conversations and driving social change. Amplifying these diverse voices in the media can work toward a more equitable and just ruling, where marginalized communities have a platform to share their stories and perspectives. This readjustment ultimately leads to greater empathy, understanding, and solidarity among different groups within society. Highlighting the experiences and perspectives of marginalized communities challenges existing power structures and promotes inclusivity and equality. This action can help create a more inclusive environment where individuals are valued and heard.
As an individual, I often find it easy to limit my worldview to only what I have personally encountered. However, by actively seeking out and listening to diverse voices in the media, I can expand my perspective and gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of others. This expansion helps me challenge my own biases and work towards creating a more inclusive and empathetic society for all. Recognizing the limitations of my perspective, I can actively work towards being an empathetic and understanding individual. It is important to continually educate ourselves and engage with diverse perspectives to foster a more inclusive society where everyone feels valued and heard.
As a society, we can only truly progress and grow when we are willing to step outside our comfort zones and actively seek new perspectives and experiences. This understanding enriches lives and contributes to a more harmonious and empathetic community for all underrepresented communities. Action through this openness and willingness to learn from others that we, as a collective, can break down barriers and build bridges between different groups. By embracing diversity and actively listening to the voices of those around us, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

I am currently a recurring volunteer at my local library. I plan to pursue a career in the library or information science field to further support my community's access to valuable resources. I believe that by continuing my education in this field, I can promote literacy and lifelong learning opportunities for all community members. I plan to pursue librarianship as a career, and working at my local chapter has solidified that goal for me. Libraries have been a safe space for much of my life. I spent many hours roaming the book-lined aisles as a child, searching for new stories, adventures, and ideas to throw myself into. Spending my time in the library has made me realize that this is the career path I want to follow. I have always believed in the power of information and community; the commodification of data has to be eluded by reasoning. Information should be accessible to everyone who wants it. Working with the library has shown me the importance of community and how sharing information can impact a community.
Before volunteering, I was struggling to choose a career path of my own. I always wanted to help people in need, but I needed to figure out how. When I started working with my local library, I realized the importance of information and the impacts of censorship. Literary censorship is a very controversial topic; many states have banned specific material from public consumption or are considering it. In my home state of Oklahoma, senators are currently evaluating the banning of material that they deem "explicit" or "controversial." The Senate, state, or otherwise, should not prohibit information. I want to work against these bans and have information available to everyone, regardless of their state's legislature.
I plan on getting a Master's degree in library science (otherwise known as an MLIS degree) to spread information in an impactful and effective manner. The library staff heavily influenced this decision, inspiring me to share information with others. They have put incredible effort into building a community around freely helping those around them. They are tireless in their pursuit of communal knowledge for the sake of the public. I have learned a lot from them, and they have shown me the societal relevance of librarianship and the effects of censorship on the library's success.
Libraries can be the backbone of a community and the lifeblood of a helpful, supportive environment, offering a space for housing books and many services and information provided by your local librarians and government. Today, we can see libraries marginally going out of style. With the rise of fast technology and the isolation that it causes, it is not a surprising fact of life that these libraries desperately need the communities that built them. Many people need to realize how helpful these resources are. I want to be a part of these impactful spaces. Helping others in a community in a safe, comfortable place with the resources provided would be a dream come true.

I would choose Pride and Prejudice (2005) because of the beautiful cinematography, captivating storyline, and strong performances by the cast. The chemistry between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy is so compelling that I could watch it repeatedly without getting tired of it. The acting of Keira Knightley as Elizabeth perfectly encased the feelings represented in the historical novel of the same name by Jane Austen. The film's stunning English countryside setting and period costumes also add to the overall charm and appeal of the movie, making it a timeless classic that I could never grow tired of watching. The emotional depth and complexity of the characters, combined with the romantic tension between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, make it a truly unforgettable cinematic experience.
After years of enjoying the film adaptation, I have recently completed a reading of the original 1813 novel, and I was pleasantly surprised by how closely the movie stayed true to Austen's words and themes. The novel provided even more insight into the characters' inner thoughts and motivations, deepening my appreciation for the story as a whole. I now have an even greater admiration for the film and the book, as they complement each other beautifully in bringing this timeless tale to life. The chemistry between Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy is palpable, adding another layer of depth to their characters' relationships. Watching on screen how Mr. Dicky's dedication to impressing Elizabeth and his attitude towards her mirror her class predisposition.
Austen's classic story has many themes that can be attributed to modern issues and problems, such as social class, gender roles, and the importance of self-awareness. The adaptation successfully captures the essence of these themes and presents them in a way that resonates with contemporary audiences both in 2005 and now in 2024—nineteen years later. The film adaptation effectively highlights the complexities of social class and the impact it has on relationships, making it relevant to audiences across different periods. Its timeless themes continue to provoke thought and reflection, enriching the viewing experience for years to come. I appreciate the role this movie has played in my life greatly and hope to continue to enjoy this awe-inspiring film. The stellar performances by the cast and the beautiful cinematography further enhance the emotional depth of the story, creating a truly unforgettable viewing experience. As I revisit this film in the future, I am confident that its impact will remain just as powerful as it was when I first watched it.

I often utilize artificial intelligence (AI) as a starting point to enhance my writing. AI helps me in various ways, such as fixing and recommending changes to my syntax and phraseology. When it comes to writing, I use AI in addition to discussion boards and internet forums that are relevant to my area of study. These online platforms provide me with a channel to interact with experts and fellow students, which enables me to learn new ideas and perspectives on the subject. I believe that engaging with these groups enhances my understanding of the subject and helps me to apply my knowledge in practical situations.
While I may use AI to quickly sketch my ideas, I prefer not to rely on it for writing. I find that using AI for idea outlining can be a useful technique for keeping my thoughts organized and ensuring that my writing flows smoothly. If my year had a soundtrack, Taylor Swift's 1989 hit song "Shake It Off" would be on it. This uplifting and empowering song encourages listeners to let go of negativity and embrace positivity, which perfectly captures the spirit of overcoming challenges and setbacks that many of us have faced this year. Its catchy tune and inspiring lyrics serve as a reminder to keep pushing forward and not let anything bring you down. Her philanthropic efforts, such as donating to disaster relief funds and supporting education initiatives, further demonstrate her commitment to making a difference in the world. With each new release, Taylor Swift not only entertains us but also reminds us of the power we have to create change and leave our mark on the world.
I hope that this new year will be filled with even more inspiring music and impactful messages from her. As I continue on my journey toward personal growth and making a difference, I look forward to seeing how Taylor's music will continue to inspire and empower me in the coming year.

Music had a profound impact on my life during my high school years. It was a constant source of comfort, inspiration, and motivation. Whether I was studying for exams, dealing with school pressures, or navigating through teenage life, music was always there to uplift my spirits and provide solace. Being involved in choir and band allowed me to form lifelong friendships with fellow musicians who shared the same passion for music, creating unforgettable memories that I will cherish forever.
I had been a member of the Claremore Middle School choir for three years before entering high school, and I knew that continuing my musical journey was a must. Joining the high school choir not only allowed me to further develop my vocal skills but also opened doors to incredible opportunities such as performing at prestigious venues and participating in competitions. The sense of camaraderie and teamwork within the choir pushed me to strive for excellence and taught me valuable lessons about dedication and discipline. Overall, being a part of the choir had been an incredibly rewarding experience.
After moving schools, the academic pressures became overwhelming, causing me to end my choir career and focus on my studies. Although I had to step away from the choir, the impact it had on me was undeniable. The experiences and lessons I gained from being a part of the choir continue to shape me as an individual, even in my academic pursuits. While I may not be actively singing anymore, the memories and skills I acquired during my time in the choir will always hold a special place in my heart. They have taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, and dedication, which I apply to my studies and other aspects of my life. These lessons have shaped the person I am today.
I have a profound love of music and continue to find joy in singing whenever I can. Whether it's singing along to my favorite songs in the car or participating in karaoke nights with friends, music remains a constant source of happiness and self-expression for me. Additionally, my time in the choir instilled in me a deep appreciation for different genres and styles of music, broadening my musical horizons and inspiring me to explore new melodies and harmonies. As my high school years come to a close, I hope to continue enjoying music and everything it has taught me, carrying these lessons with me into the future.

These efforts aim to make libraries inclusive spaces that cater to the diverse needs of their communities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.
Hermit Tarot Scholarship
The High Priestess tarot card is often overlooked, but it exudes an enigmatic and influential aura and is indeed a compelling card. It embodies the deeper aspects of the unconscious mind, inner voice, and intuition. The High Priestess tarot card serves as a guide, urging us to have faith in our instincts and explore the mysteries of one's life with confidence. That is why it is my favorite tarot card. Her serene yet enigmatic presence reminds me to trust my intuition and confidently embrace the unknown. The High Priestess unlocks hidden knowledge and serves as a constant source of inspiration and guidance in my spiritual journey.
In the standard seventy-two-card tarot deck, the High Priestess is often misunderstood by users in place of the more popular Fool and Empress cards. However, those who take the time to understand her symbolism and message will discover that she holds immense power and wisdom. The card represents the connection between our conscious and unconscious minds, reminding us to listen to our inner voice and trust our intuition for guidance. The High Priestess card inspires us to tap into our inner knowing, reminding us that sometimes the answers we seek can only be found within ourselves.
The opposite of this card, which likewise possesses strong intuition, suggests that a barrier or opposition is holding us back from reaching our inner wisdom. It prompts us to be aware of any internal struggles or uncertainties that may be impeding our ability to have faith in ourselves. The High Priestess' inversion urges us to delve more deeply into our subconscious, as there may be knowledge or insights waiting to be discovered there. If we are self-assured and determined, we may access our inner wisdom and unleash the power of the High Priestess.
This card serves as a helpful reminder to accept the unknown and have faith in my inner wisdom, as I have personally found it difficult to rely on my intuition. When we embrace uncertainty and have faith in our inner wisdom, our intuition may guide us to make decisions that are true to who we are. The High Priestess reminds us that in some cases, the answers we seek come from within us rather than from the outside world. Having faith in our intelligence may result in a greater sense of self-confidence and self-awareness. Trusting our intuition and listening to our inner voice can lead us to the most authentic path for ourselves.
Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Prioritizing my mental health is crucial for my academic performance and personal life. By taking care of myself, I can concentrate better, retain information more effectively, and engage in my studies positively. I believe that my overall well-being and relationships with others also improve when I prioritize my mental health. It would be virtually impossible to achieve academic or fiscal goals myself without taking the time to prioritize self-care and practice mindfulness. When I neglect my mental health, I often find myself feeling overwhelmed and burnt out, which negatively impacts my ability to focus and perform well academically. Additionally, prioritizing self-care allows me to manage stress more effectively and maintain a healthy work-life balance. By making mental health a priority, I can approach challenges with resilience and adaptability, ultimately leading to greater success in all areas of my life.
I actively engage in self-care practices such as regular exercise, practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques, and seeking support from friends and family if needed. I also make sure to take breaks and prioritize activities that bring me joy and reduce stress. By incorporating these self-care practices into my daily routine, I am inspired to prioritize my mental health and balance my academic pursuits and personal well-being.
I need to remember that self-care is not selfish but rather a necessary part of maintaining overall well-being. By taking care of myself, I am better equipped to handle the challenges that come my way and be there for others when they need support. My mental health regarding a healthy balance between my academic pursuits and personal well-being has been an uphill battle that I do not intend to give up on.
I have learned that seeking support from friends or family can greatly contribute to maintaining my mental health. Additionally, practicing mindfulness and engaging in activities that bring me joy and relaxation, such as reading or listening to music, further enhance my overall well-being. By continuously striving for this balance, I am committed to nurturing my mental health and achieving long-term success in my academic and personal lives.
Furthermore, I have found that setting realistic goals and prioritizing my tasks have helped me manage my time effectively, reducing stress and allowing me to allocate sufficient time for self-care. Incorporating regular exercise into my routine has proven to be a valuable outlet for releasing tension and improving my overall mood, ultimately aiding in maintaining a healthy balance between my academic pursuits and personal well-being.
Colby R. Eggleston and Kyla Lee Entrepreneurship Award
Living in a tiny town in rural Oklahoma, it is a struggle for new businesses to stay afloat in a dwindling economy. One business that I believe has a good chance of succeeding is real estate. Real estate is a promising business in my local community, as it can help address the growing housing needs and attract potential investors to our area. By providing affordable housing options and assisting individuals in buying or selling properties, this business would contribute to the general welfare of our community by stimulating economic growth and creating job opportunities. To develop such a business, I would conduct market research to identify the demand for specific properties, collaborate with local contractors and architects to build or renovate houses and establish partnerships with financial revenue.
I would also focus on marketing strategies to promote the available housing options and showcase the benefits of investing in our community. By leveraging social media platforms and organizing local events, we can effectively reach potential investors and highlight the advantages of living in the area. Moreover, I would prioritize providing excellent customer service and building effective relationships with clients to ensure their satisfaction and encourage repeat business. To further enhance our offerings, I would explore collaborations with interior designers and landscaping experts to create aesthetically pleasing and functional living spaces. This holistic approach will attract potential buyers and add value to the properties we develop or renovate. Additionally, I would actively engage with local government officials and community leaders to stay updated on any upcoming infrastructure projects or developments that could positively impact the housing market in our area. By staying informed and adapting our strategies accordingly, we can position ourselves as a trusted and reliable choice for investors and residents.
I would establish this business venture by contacting potential investors and presenting a comprehensive business plan that outlines our unique selling proposition and growth potential. Additionally, I would conduct market research to identify target demographics and tailor our marketing strategies accordingly. This act would enable us to communicate the value of investing in our community and attract investors who align with our vision and goals. Furthermore, I would collaborate with local organizations and government entities to create a supportive ecosystem that fosters growth and attracts further investment opportunities. By establishing strong partnerships and alliances, we can leverage their resources and expertise to accelerate our growth and increase our chances of success. Additionally, I would actively seek out networking opportunities and attend industry events to build relationships with key stakeholders and gain exposure to our business. This action would not only enhance our credibility but also open doors to potential investors who may be interested in joining us on this exciting journey.
Walking In Authority International Ministry Scholarship
People are social creatures by nature, and many of them aspire to a sense of belonging. Whether it be small or large, helping the community is one of the most fundamental human endeavors. Today's prosperous, successful communities depend on labor and communication; there can be no future without human interaction between neighbors if individuals do not work to provide a more pleasant environment for the public when they need it. I have spent a few years living in my town. It has come to my attention lately that I have not been an active part of the community and feel alienated in my neighborhood. Recently, I have been working with the public library to establish relationships and assist in planning activities that would broaden the library's reach and better our community. By actively participating in community initiatives, I have realized the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and unity among neighbors. Through my involvement with the public library, I have witnessed firsthand how collaboration and shared goals can create a stronger and more prosperous community. It is crucial for individuals to actively engage with their neighbors and work towards a common vision to ensure a thriving future for all.
My mother is the one who has inspired me to get more active. Throughout my life, she has inspired me to take initiative, be a positive role model, and help others in need. My siblings and I were taught to depend on our communities. and that we ought to repay them in whatever manner we can. My childhood home was Claremore, Oklahoma, a tiny university town with 20,000 or so residents. The large public library in this charming town was a great asset. Vast shelves, rows of computers, and a sizable children's reading area are all located within its walls. I was a young person, and the highlight of my week was supporting their library. A sizable children's area and plenty of windows were a wonder and an inspiration in my life. I am now pursuing a degree in library science as I move on from high school to what lies ahead. The library in Claremore, Oklahoma, played a significant role in shaping my passion for libraries. The vast shelves filled with books from various genres and the rows of computers opened up a world of knowledge and possibilities for me. The library's commitment to providing a dedicated children's reading area with plenty of windows sparked my imagination and fueled my love for storytelling. Now, as I transition from high school to the next chapter of my life, I am excited to pursue a degree in library science and continue
Libraries have long been seen as more specialized spaces for learning, development, and community building worldwide, where everyone may take part largely without incurring fines or taxes. This is something I have always appreciated because so many people just value the calm study environment and fail to see the wealth of knowledge about their society that can be found there. I've been learning the ropes and helping at my local chapter for a few weeks now. How to sort, shelve, and arrange a wide variety of paper and digital media formats. In many respects, this experience has strengthened my bond with my community. Along with the library staff, I have met a lot of regulars, and they have shown me that there is so much more than meets the eye in my small town.
Good People, Cool Things Scholarship
An age-old art form, fabric, and fiber crafts have recently seen a rise in popularity. Nowadays, it's "trendy" to sew, knit, crochet, and embroider original and personalized items for oneself or as gifts. Crocheting has always been a laborious craft that was mostly practiced by elderly women in the family. However, a broader spectrum of individuals, regardless of age, are increasingly embracing the French craft of crochet due to the return of do-it-yourself culture and the appeal of handcrafted things. When I was thirteen, I learned how to crochet, and I've since put in countless hours honing the skill. Using a crochet hook to create elaborate designs, I would love to spend my perfect crafting session in a comfortable spot surrounded by lovely colors of yarn.
My great-grandmother did not have much to her name; to make some extra funds to support her family, she would hand-make clothes for the neighborhood and her children. I never knew my great-grandmother, but her legacy lives on through the stories my family tells and the beautiful garments she created. Crocheting has become a way for me to connect with my family's history and honor my great-grandmother's talent. It brings me joy to carry on her tradition and share her love for handmade crafts with others. I am immensely proud to carry on the traditions of my family. It is a part of who I am and a way for me to preserve our heritage for future generations.
Crocheting not only allows me to create unique and meaningful pieces, but it also serves as a reminder of the strong bond that ties my family together. As I work on each stitch, I feel connected to my great-grandmother and the generations before me who shared her passion for craftsmanship. By passing down this tradition, I hope to inspire others to appreciate the value of handmade items and the stories they hold within them.
If given the extra twenty-four hours a day, I would spend it honoring my family through textile craftsmanship. I would use the extra time to learn new techniques and experiment with different materials, allowing me to expand my skills and create even more intricate and meaningful pieces. Additionally, I would love to organize workshops or classes where I can teach others the art of textile craftsmanship, passing on the knowledge and passion that have been handed down through generations in my family.
'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Insight Scholarship
The phrase 'Once upon a time in Hollywood' sparks a sense of nostalgia and curiosity within me. It evokes images of a bygone era filled with glamour, iconic movie stars, and the magic of cinema. It reminds me of the power of storytelling and how Hollywood has played a significant role in shaping cultural narratives around the world. Additionally, it makes me wonder about the untold stories and hidden realities behind the glitz and glamor, prompting me to explore the complexities that lie beneath the surface.
I am a frequent consumer of films, both in and out of Hollywood. I enjoy exploring different genres and styles of filmmaking and appreciating the diverse perspectives and narratives that come from filmmakers around the globe. It allows me to broaden my understanding of different cultures and experiences while also providing a form of escapism and entertainment in my everyday life. I enjoy picking apart narratives and further understanding the director's message and story bias or commentary. By analyzing the director's choices in cinematography, editing, and character development, I can gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind each film. Additionally, examining the underlying themes and social commentary within movies helps me critically engage with societal issues and spark meaningful conversations with others.
Cinema has also played a major role in societal nomenclature; it feels as if holding a mirror to the audience, exposing our bias as consumers' effects on the narrative. In Western movie culture, we can see examples of sexism, racism, and ageism, as well as the rampant exploitation of actors and our society. These issues are often reflected in the portrayal of certain characters and storylines, shedding light on the deep-rooted prejudices and inequalities that exist in our society. By analyzing these aspects of cinema, we can gain a better understanding of the broader cultural context in which films are created and consumed. This awareness can lead to important discussions and ultimately drive positive change in our attitudes and behaviors.
Looking back at "old Hollywood" films, we can see the rise in fast beauty standards; the fast-paced silver screen was much more interactive with this concept than other media at the time. The portrayal of women in these films often reinforces unrealistic beauty ideals, perpetuates harmful stereotypes, and contributes to the objectification of women. Additionally, the lack of diversity in casting and storytelling further marginalizes underrepresented groups, reinforcing societal inequalities. This being said, these glamorous films have shaped our society as a whole; they are evolving to be a more inclusive medium, and by showing underrepresented groups in the media, they can be "normalized" in Western culture.
Harriett Russell Carr Memorial Scholarship
Excellence is not a goal that I strive to reach; it is a standard that I hold myself to. Excellence, for me, goes beyond mere achievements or accomplishments. It is a mindset that drives me to consistently push my limits and deliver my best in everything I do. This personal standard of excellence does not equate to perfection, but rather to the effort I put forth. If I have given my best effort during a given task, then I have met my standard of excellence. In the past, I used to tie my self-worth to my academic performance. However, I now understand that this is not a healthy way to view myself. I have learned to value myself based on my character, values, and the impact I have on others rather than solely relying on external achievements. I realize that academic success is a relative measure and does not affect my or anyone else's inherent value.
Mental health has been at the forefront of my focus recently. I have come to recognize the importance of prioritizing self-care and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Taking care of my mental well-being allows me to perform at my best and achieve a true sense of fulfillment or excellence in all aspects of life. By not limiting my idea of excellence to a perpetual goal, I have felt as if I am more structured and disciplined. This has resulted in increased productivity and overall satisfaction with my daily activities. Additionally, prioritizing mental health has allowed me to develop stronger relationships and a deeper understanding of myself and others.
At this point in my life, I have worked to use excellence in my community. I have actively sought opportunities to contribute to the betterment of my community through volunteering and participating in local initiatives. This has not only allowed me to make a positive impact on those around me, but it has also provided a sense of purpose and fulfillment that goes beyond personal achievements. Volunteering at my local library has opened my eyes to the power of excellence. I have witnessed how my dedication and commitment to providing quality service to library patrons have made a positive impact on their lives. It has taught me that excellence is not just about personal achievement but also about making a difference in the lives of others. Through my time at the library, I have come to appreciate that true excellence lies in the ability to contribute positively to the community.
Windward Spirit Scholarship
The "Ode to Gen-Z and Millennials" is a bit of an offsetting piece to read as a member of Gen-Z; it feels as if the author is a little out of touch with my young generation and how we view the state of the world compared to the baby boomers after the effects of WWII. The state of affairs in the United States is very similar to the one of the 1940s' we have new enemies and idols, and it has never been easier to share information, regardless of accuracy or bias, propaganda is a plague over the internet infecting the minds of impressionable users. The ideologies and values of the youth have a stark difference in philosophies to older generations.
The optimistic view of the 1940s and 50s, led by a newfound hope for the future, opposes the nihilism and pessimism of the 2020s. We have become desensitized to the violence in the world, with the speed of information teaching us second-hand hopelessness. It would take minimal effort to see war, violence, prejudice, and the despair of the news of our elders fueling the nihilistic revolution. If nothing and nobody cares about your future, why should you? It's hard to remove oneself from the internet; it is a new addiction with no practical cure besides the hollow advice to "put away the phone and go outside." Gen-Z and millennials are socially chained to technology.
The ode has a call to action for younger generations to "fix" the world live in after the effects of generations before. The prose mirrors the experience of baby boomers in the wake of WWII. Just as they saw this as an immense, inescapable responsibility, Gen-Z and millennials are feeling the same pressure yet with the bonus of fast information and communication. The ode gives a sense of hope to younger generations that as before us, they could continue, so will we.
“The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
"Dwight Kurt Shrute III," played by Rainn Wilson, is a comedic fictional character within the "Office" universe. Dwight represents the "strange" coworker in an office space. The slightly offputting, obsessive character has been a favorite of mine since I started watching the show. Dwight resonates with me precisely because I have been known to exhibit strange, antisocial behaviors when presented with a conformist scenario, although to a much smaller degree than the fictional Shrute. The character is often ridiculed for his unbelievable behavior by Jim Halpert, his "everyman," "average" coworker, and rival. Jim is the antithesis of Dwight; he is a young, moderate man with a wife and two children at the end of the show. Dwight is not jealous of Jim but constantly finds himself at odds with Jims' antics. Jim's pranks are often presented to us, the audience, as either retribution for Dwight's schemes or an unfounded joke at his expense. These characters are hilarious to see on screen; however, it is very separated from a typical "day in the office," the show has been a reminder to me to take the time to find joy in the minute pleasures of the workplace in coworkers and to appreciate the little things in life.
“Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
If I were to choose a team to face a new stranger evil, my ideal picks would be Nancy Wheeler, Robin Buckley, and Joyce Byers. The resilience and strength of these characters are majorly underappreciated within the currently premiered three seasons of the show. These characters can not only hold their own, but these characters would work very well together. Although Nancy and Robin have canonically been on their adventures, they have not been shown to interact with Wininona Ryders, Joyce. Winona is considerably older than the girls, but I don't think that this would hinder their ability to strategize and outwit their foes, both human, monster, and world governments. The academic knowledge presented by all three women is substantial and would make them a formidable powerhouse in the face of danger. The acting ability of Winona and Natillie Dyers, Nancy would create fantastic dramatic scenes in contrast to the comedic moments of Robin, played by Maya Hawke. These actresses do a tremendous job in their respective roles; their characters are incredibly believable as their characters. The Stranger Things characters are fascinating to see being resourceful in their daring adventures in Hawkins, Indiana, and the mysterious alternate universe of the upsidedown.
Book Lovers Scholarship
"Holes" by Louis Sachar, published in August 1998, is considered a modern-day classic by many. Everyone in the world at least once should consume this book. This book describes a generational curse following Stanley Yelnats on an unintentional journey with Hector Zeroni (Zero) to fulfill the fate that their predecessor could not. In many states within the United States, this book is required material for public middle and high school students. This book is a fantastic way to teach children and adults about the weight of generational turmoil and the value of a promise. The world could benefit from the reminder to rely on your friends as they should you.
People today are constantly searching for an alternative motive in others and a way to benefit themselves. The mistrust we have in others can sometimes be justified, but we are unnecessarily anxious about the intentions of others. Honesty can build bonds with others and is the basis of a strong community. With the rise of social media, it's impossible to comprehend the impact of our words and the longevity of our terms. Now more than ever, people need faith in each other. Humans are social creatures, and we need each other to survive. This ideal can represent the novel, which details how the main characters must rely on each other for the sake of their families and their own lives.
I first read this book in sixth-grade English class. The idea of a generational curse and fate was encouraging and profoundly impacted my young life. This book was eye-opening for me and my classmates, with a likable cast of characters and daring situations. What is not to like? I implore this book to you. If you have not already read it, the messages of kindness and trust apply to this day.
Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
MarioKart is an infamous game in my home for its collaborative, competitive gaming experience. I remember playing countless rounds between unfounded accusations of cheating at the game. Specifically, I remember being quarantined in my home with my siblings during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic; we would have driven each other mad without this game keeping us entertained. We spent possibly too much time competing for the digital-first place trophy; it gave us a lot of bonding experience, and I am grateful for the relationship I have with my siblings. In my house, we are highly competitive, especially in games. We spend our Friday nights gathered in the living room to play and compete in a tournament-style event. My parents spent much of their young adulthood playing against each other, which they've carried into our family. Family is essential to me, and I am incredibly grateful for the connection and the love I feel for my own. MarioKart, along with its sister games, notably Luigis Mansion, Mario64, and SuperMario, are staples in my home and are a fantastic way to bond with one another. I am a generational fan of Nintendo and its Mario game series, and I am thankful for how close it has brought my family together.
Anime Enthusiast Scholarship
Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio famous for its calm, peaceful motion pictures accompanied by sweeping scores and incredibly likable characters. Their film "Howls' Moving Castle," based on the British novel of the same name, follows Sophie through her journeys with a witch known as Howl in his, you might have guessed it, moving castle. She goes on a personal journey of self-discovery after being cursed by the minor antagonist, the Witch of the Waste. This heartwarming film is a masterpiece, a testament to the art of animation and the intricacies of the craft. I am fond of this movie, specifically its awe-inspiring score by Joe Hisaishi and Youmi Kimura. The music sets the soothing tone of the film and forces its listener to sit back and enjoy. The main song for the movie, "Merry Go Round," reminds me of spring, ever tranquil and loving. This movie was my first experience with Studio Ghibli, and it has inspired me to become a fan of the Anime genre. This 2004 movie has been a favorite of mine for the last few years, and I would watch it constantly if I had the time. "Howls' Moving Castle" is my favorite anime movie to date.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
"And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news/ you called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called them crazy too"- "VAMPIRE," Olivia Rodrigo" This line is indicative of many young girls experiences within relationships, the naivety and the jealousy that comes with a teenage relationship. Many adolescent girls, like myself, can relate to this lyric. Lashing out at people, even friends, because they are advising against their newest relationship for one reason or another. Disregarding your friends' opinions, pursuing a relationship wherein their partner is as bad or worse than the friends described, and then regretting the actions after the fact. It is genuinely disheartening to see how many young children/teenagers relate to this; turning your back on the people you trust has become a near-universal experience within teenage girlhood.
Girlhood is a multifaceted concept that distinguishes itself from the experiences of growing up male in many ways. Girlhood is defined as a sense of community with the women and girls in your life. This experience is such a wholesome and terrifying concept when concerning womanhood. Womanhood is different from girlhood because it is usually defined by men, often pitting women against each other in social competition for male validation and attention. This is in direct opposition to how many girls are raised. In saying this, the transition from girl to woman is a complicated, messy venture.
Being a teenager is a constant struggle between being "too old" for girlhood and "too young" for womanhood. The internal battle translates to Rodrigo's line in "Vampire." She starts the verse with an omission of the advice she didn't follow, turning her back on girlhood to act in accordance with older femininity. Then the artist, after seeing firsthand how their peers did have their best intentions for her, apologizes for not seeing that womanhood is not losing one's girlhood but growing with and around it.
Rodrigo's song focuses on her past relationship and the "bloodsucker" tactics used to compel her into a relationship and how her inexperience was seen by the unnamed manipulator and used to their advantage. It is in no way Rodrigo's fault, as it is no teenager's or child's fault that people prey on innocence constantly. An unfortunate truth about the community of girlhood is that it is often represented by girls warning one another about these predators. This song reads like a love letter to teenage girls experiencing manipulation and an informant to take care of one another because it is unlikely that anyone else will.
Netflix and Scholarships!
Netflix offers a wide variety of shows and movies for its patrons, and one of those patrons I have currently is the Netflix original series, "Derry Girls:" This show features a group of Irish school children in 1990s Northern Ireland. They are growing up in a political conflict. The show portrays how these teenagers seek refuge and a normal childhood with the backdrop of a historic time in Ireland. The girls' navigation through their young lives is an excellent portrayal of teenage girlhood and the emotional turmoil involved. I relate heavily to the girls in their struggle for independence and finding a sense of identity.
Ireland has had residence since 7900 BC, and Britain has attempted to conquer Ireland since the 17th century, significantly impacting what Ireland is today. Ireland has been subject to many wars and battles for independence from the British forces. "Derry Girls" fictionally occurred in the 1990s after four centuries of conflict. These girls have never known life without war in their country, encroaching on their homes as they enter young adulthood. The girls attend a catholic school outside of their hometown of Derry, which makes them a target of protestant British forces. The show beautifully portrays how they have been accustomed to fighting and continuing to live their lives as any other child should be able to.
Within the first season, we see these children come to understand the world around them. They are figuring out who they want to be and what kind of people they will become. This show is very popular with teenagers experiencing those same emotions. I have experienced struggles with residing who I want to be and how I want to present myself to the world. At the end of the season, we can see the difference between the girls from the beginning; they have become much more well-rounded characters. They learn to understand and relate to each other, and they learn to empathize with one another and their friends and adversaries' experiences.
The show has been my favorite Netflix series after it was recommended to me by a friend of mine, and I'm glad that they did. "Derry Girls" is a favorite among my friend group, and I have found a sense of relation to the characters who act very similarly to them. Their attempts at finding peace and self are such a comfort to see; representation matters for everyone, particularly those struggling with finding themselves.
McClendon Leadership Award
Leadership is a significant value and skill to possess as a person. We often undervalue this skill in our society. Throughout my life, I have been called opinionated more times than I can fathom. I have taken part in many years of team sports and activities to be equipped as a leader in my daily life. Leadership means effectively directing a group toward a common goal. With this ability, I wonder if anyone could get anything accomplished. Leading is not something that I consider natural to myself, but I am working towards effective leadership within my community.
Everyone can lead, but by definition of the word, only a few can use this ability. This is not an inherently harmful fact; with too many leaders, we can lead effectively nothing. We can express this point in the fifteenth-century abridged proverb, "Too many cooks spoil the broth." This means a group's heightened sense of control ruins the task. Not that leadership is unnecessary in any sense of the word. With a balanced use of power, accomplishments can be limitless. I have worked to accomplish my goals, as well as group goals, through the effective use of leadership skills.
As it stands, I am the head editor of my school yearbook and have been an editor for the last four years of high school. I have used my experience as an editor to lead my staff to an impressive addition to the series. I have been teaching my first- and second-year students the value of a yearbook and the importance of our work to provide a lasting keepsake of the school year. They have learned digital design, journalistic writing, and advertising skills, as I had in their position. This example of leadership is a small example of the level of leadership that I am achieving.
Leadership is a means to a well-functioning society. With it, those before us could have achieved only a little, and we would learn nothing to prepare ourselves for the future. I plan to become a public librarian to lead future generations into lifelong learning enjoyment and lead others to success—inspiration in my life. I am now pursuing a degree in library science as I move on from high school to what lies ahead.
Libraries, for many years, have been used as a more specialized place to learn, grow, and strengthen communities globally, somewhere anyone can participate in large part without fines or fees. Future generations will be the next leaders, and if they receive a well-balanced idea of leadership, it is possible to tell where they will lead their future generations. I aim to lead and inspire others to a successful, happy life.
Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
I am currently a recurring volunteer at my local library. I have always believed in the power of information and community; the commodification of data has to be eluded reasoning.
In my home state of Oklahoma, senators are currently evaluating the banning of material that they deem "explicit" or "controversial." Senate, state or otherwise, should not prohibit information. I want to work against these bans and have information available to everyone regardless of their state's legislature.
I plan on getting a Master's degree in library science (otherwise known as an MLIS degree) to spread information in an impactful, effective manner. The library staff heavily influenced this decision, inspiring me to share information like others.
Michael Rudometkin Memorial Scholarship
Selflessness is something that, as conscious beings, we should all strive for and accomplish when it is possible. I have tried to be as selfless as I can manage. I have grown up with two younger siblings and have been caring for them for much of their lives. My parents work incredibly hard to provide for my siblings and me. Without their guidance, I could not be here today, and their selflessness inspires me and how I want to be in my own life. My parents have instilled a sense of community, the idea that helping others is the most noble thing.
My siblings mean the world to me, and I would do anything for either of them. My younger sister is now seventeen, and my brother is twelve. When we were younger, my parents had little time to cook or clean for us. I do not blame either of them for this, and it is just a fact that they both could not have done everything. I had taken it upon myself to help my siblings when they needed it; I had become a kind of third parent to my young siblings. I often spent my time after school doing laundry before starting dinner before my mother came home to help.
Taking care of my family has taught me a lot about responsibility and what it takes to run a home. Cooking is essential to my family. It brings us together in many ways. Every holiday, my family members gather to prepare and serve dishes together. Daily cooking for my family has brought me closer to them in ways I will never know. I am grateful to my family, and I feel fortunate that I was born into a loving, supportive family who takes care of each other. Although I have not written much about community service, my family is my community. They have been my biggest supporters, and I help them in any way I can.
Taking care of people is a significant factor in my life. I plan to become a public librarian to help my community in a safe and comfortable environment. I am getting a master's degree in library science to be informed about the most effective methods of helping those around me. With libraries, many communities would thrive. The information and services local libraries provide are vast and must be utilized more. Becoming better suited for a life in librarianship is my dream.
Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
The mythical land of Hogwarts is a popular fantasy destination for many. With a likable protagonist, an unbelievable school, and an expansive lore, it is hard not to fall in love. I was introduced to the series later in life and have yet to read the entire series. Nevertheless, the allure of a house could not be evaded. With endless online quizzes, your Hogwarts home can determine a vast array of your personality. The internet has been a hub of "Harry Potter" fan theories and self-inserted characters; the fans have made this series one of their own.
Growing up, I had difficulty making friends and often spent my free time in libraries. Fantasy had its firm grasp on my psyche. Putting myself in the shoes of fictional heroes and protagonists was far more accessible than reconciling how alone I had felt. It is hard to imagine why the "Harry Potter" series had alluded me for most of my childhood. If given the chance to go back, I would have read the series in a heartbeat. The "Harry Potter" community has many members who likewise had difficulty socializing; I would have enjoyed the camaraderie.
The "Harry Potter" fanbase has also adopted the housing system as an identifier for each other. Some people base most of their personalities on their fictional houses. I don't think I could say that I am part of the fanbase, but I do think this way of identification is a creative, nuanced way of socializing. I have considered myself a Hufflepuff for a while now due to their polite and friendly nature. Although it is not a famous house, the Hufflepuff track is the most related. Leading with compassion and empathy is my most worthwhile way to live. I like to think of myself as generous, always trying to give back to my community in any way I can.
If I could attend the magical school, I would excel tremendously in the Hufflepuff House. I would be with like-minded individuals who find the best in others and themselves. I want to think that the others on the Hufflepuff track have had similar experiences trying to be social and make friends. If it were to exist, the house would be full of joy, life, and kind, loving students who believe in the goodness of those around them. This is why I would make an excellent addition to the track.
Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
Books are worlds to themselves, each focusing on a new aspect of human perception and imagination. The diversity, even between the same topics, events, and emotions, is an astounding feat of consciousness. Fiction is the strangest aspect of literature, the way a writer can transport a reader to a place that doesn't exist with fabricated creatures that have no basis in reality. My fascination with fiction has stood the test of time and has grown as I move through life. The escapism of false reality is a welcomed distraction from the real-life problems of being a real-life person.
Libraries have acted like a haven for me for most of my life, and it has forever impacted my love of reading and gaining new information; I plan on becoming a public librarian to aid others in a lifelong love of reading. If I were to create a customized bookshelf, there would be an array of fictional worlds to explore: Rick Riordans' "Percy Jackson" series, "The Secret Garden" by Frances H. Burnett, and a collection of more classic tales like that of Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice," "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Brontë, and "The Picture of Dorian Grey" by Oscar Wilde. I have a vague idea of most of these stories, but there is a stark difference between knowing about and reading an account for yourself. Reading through the lives and stories of others teaches us to be considerate to our fellow man and experience the world from a different cultural perspective.
I find a lot of joy in researching the historical context of a given account before completing a text. Whether the austere worlds of Jane Austin or the trepid adventures in Frances H. Burn, with Tic-Tok, it is easier than ever to get recommendations for new stories to dive into. I expanded my to-be-read list by scrolling through the book-tok hashtags and videos. Along with my usual literary diet of classic and fantasy literature, Tic-tok has broadened my appetite for biographies and historical events—Kate Moore's "Radium Girls" and "The Romanovs" by Simon S. Montefiore are two that I plan to read soon. The vastness of the book-tok community provides many personalized recommendations in every genre. It provides a welcoming space for academics at any reading level to advance their experiences, with the community guidance and support to drive the love of reading into the minds of thousands of tic-tok users.

Humans are naturally social, and many strive for a sense of community within themselves. Helping the community, even in the most mundane ways, is one of the most intrinsically human things to do. Today, successful, thriving communities rely on communication and labor; without the efforts of the people for a more comfortable space for the public who needs it, there is no future without a personal interface with one's neighbors. I have lived within my community for a few years. I have recently seen that I have not been a proactive community member and have felt like an outsider in my neighborhood. I have spent time lately with the public library to make connections and help organize events that expand the library's outreach to better our community.
My biggest inspiration to be more involved is my Mother. She has encouraged me throughout my life to take action, to be an advantageous person, and to give back to those in need. My parents instilled in my siblings and me that we rely on our communities. And that we should give back in any way we can. I grew up in Claremore, OK., a small college town with a population of about twenty thousand. A huge benefit to this quaint town was its enormous public library. Its walls are full of sprawling shelves, rows of computers, and a vast reading nook for children. Supporting their library was the highlight of my week in my young life. The large windows and a large children's section were a wonder and an inspiration in my life. I am now pursuing a degree in library science as I move on from high school to what lies ahead.
Libraries, for many years, have been used as a more specialized place to learn, grow, and strengthen communities globally, somewhere anyone can participate in large part without fines or fees. I have always admired this fact, as many people only appreciate the quiet learning atmosphere, disregarding the plethora of information about their community that it can hold. I have been volunteering at my local chapter for several weeks now, learning the tools of the trade. How to organize, shelve, and process many different forms of both digital and paper media. This experience has brought me closer to my community in many ways. I have met many regulars and, of course, the library staff, who have sincerely taught me that there is so much more than meets the eye in my small town.

Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
Starbucks has had a virtual monopoly on the coffee industry for years, the Seatle startup has grown to global acclaim since its birth in 1971, in part due to its focus on sustainability-sourced products, customization, and its iconic fall menu. The idea of seasonal menu options is not a new concept. Restaurants have used interchangeable menus for many reasons including; cutting costs by not ordering products year-round, and advertisement opportunities from the exciting new stocks. Not to mention a recurring user base of customers patiently waiting for their favorite products to be back on the menu. Starbucks customers are enraptured with the popular drinks namely the ever-popular pumpkin-spice latte. This drink has sparked many a conversation about whether enjoying this fashionable beverage makes the consumer “basic”. The aesthetic of the fall flavors has been a constant in my fall narrative.
Autumn, or fall here in the U.S., is a time for comfort, and the luxury of relaxation with a refreshing blend of espresso and pumpkin syrup. The rich brew is a staple for many during the colder months to prepare for the numerous holidays ahead, and it is a staple in my own fall experience, to curl up with a good book, drink in hand, and unwind before the inevitable holiday shopping. To me, autumn brings memories of my family sharing our Thanksgiving Day meal, the cinnamon and pumpkin-flavored desserts, and many savory dishes. The scent of the house after a full day of festivities is reminiscent of the seasonal delight of a pumpkin spice latte.
The iconic pumpkin spice latte has also become synonymous with “basicness.” The idea of being a part of pop-culture trends being wrong, for not diverging from the ever-beaten path of trends is a relatively new concept that has been influenced by the use of social media in recent years. The uptick in bullying for relatively mundane acts is ever-present in our digital age. Someone can post a video of them drinking a popular drink from a popular brand and instantly be harassed by strangers online for their modest actions. There is no reason that I can see the level of condemnation for those who fall within the imaginary mainstream. The internet has decided that Starbucks' pumpkin spice would be a symbol of being mainstream because it is arguably one of the most popular beverages on the planet with millions of sales every year.
With the hate online for the crime of “basic” it can be difficult to enjoy your life without putting in the effort to change what your interests, hobbies, and preferences are. Living a life based on what strangers think of you, is no real way to live your life with sincerity. With the rise of social media, it is impossible to know just how many are affected by the antagonism they might be spreading themselves. I can not say that I have not been influenced by the virtual bandwagon of hate, and I have made it a point in my day-to-day life to do things that I find fulfillment in like the Starbucks pumpkin spiced latte.
Barbie Dream House Scholarship
"Barbie" is one of the most iconic figures in the childhood of millions. Her sixty-four-year-old legacy has all but diminished in recent years with the development of the 2023 film "Barbie." With this historic doll comes its quintessential features. "Barbie" through the years has had countless reiterations of herself which come with many accessories and properties. The concept of miniature toys to be bought with the main attraction was practically invented by Mattel, the maker of "Barbie." This naturally includes her dream house, and it's reinventing how we think of toys to this day."Barbie" and her dream house are timeless. My "Barbie" inspired dream house would be not in Malibu but in a Canadian mountain range.
Canada, specifically Alberta, has been my dream vacation for many years. The mountainous landscape, various cultures, and beautiful architecture would be a perfect location for a dream house. Tucked away low in the Rocky Mountains, my one-story dream home would have a large outside porch overlooking a lake, a wood-burning stove, and a cozy reading loft with a built-in library. A warm, inviting atmosphere with the scent of pinewood and bread throughout. There would be many fabulous features to boot, making living far from the rest of society more accommodating.
This small dream oasis would house a comfortably large kitchen encompassing most of the floor plan. A reading nook, with a window overlooking the lake and storage benches, with extra quilts and blankets for the colder months. The cabin walls would brim with vintage tchotchkes and paintings from local vendors. This home is not the ideal "Barbie" dream house for many but, this cabin would be my dream slice of heaven.

Now more than ever, people need faith in each other as a population. Humans are social creatures, and we need each other to survive. This ideal can represent the novel, which details how the main characters must rely on each other for the sake of their families and their own lives.
I first read this book in sixth-grade English class. The idea of a generational curse and fate was encouraging and had a profound impact on my young life. This book was an eye-opening read for myself as well as my classmates and with a likable cast of characters and daring situations. What is not to like? I implore this book to you. If you have not already read it, the messages of kindness and trust apply to this day.
Aspiring Musician Scholarship
Music is one of the more understood forms of expression in the world. The art of vocal and instrumental music has been intrinsic to the human experience since the dawn of civilization. Throughout time, there have been many developments in creating music, considering that cultures globally have used this art form as expressions of emotion, worship, and praise. Music has become very divided in recent years. Many sub-genres have been created in response to a growing need for individualism or a sense of identity, specifically in young adults and teenagers. Music from around the world is easier than ever to produce and consume, and with that, we can see the fear of unoriginality and shame around being conventional by your peers through the rise of social media and the speed of musical trends.
Sub-genres of music are vast and incredibly diverse in content and ambiance. Younger generations who have grown accustomed to fast, reliable consumption have used this art form of phasing out more traditional forms of socializing. Musical preferences have become a secondary form of personality traits for many people. Who someone listens to can convey a plethora of information to people such as political beliefs, cognitive styles, aesthetics, and in some studies, how their brain processes information. Musical profiling has become a way for people to find others with similar interests and ideas. This method has aided others and myself in choosing who we would want to know further.
Within my life, I have struggled with expression and music was my primary way of feeling seen and heard by musicians who have felt similar experiences to my own. Music has helped tremendously throughout my life to determine who I am and the change that I want to see in the world. My musical preferences are erratic and inconsistent and I would not have it any other way. Limiting your experience on genre is a confining experience. I try to not limit what I listen to and keep an open mind to music and philosophy. As music is an art form, we cannot fully separate it from its artist and their biases often seep into the piece itself no matter who or how it came to be. Music has an inherent message. This has limited many people to what they listen to, but to me, listening to others' arguments and forming your own opinions on the matter is the best way to experience the world in a more enlightened way.
Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
WinnerGrowing up, books played a considerable part in my life. My parents both heavily pushed my education, especially literacy, from a young age. The main goal of their parenting was to raise well-educated and well-rounded children through many hours of story time, sports, and other forms of early learning. The ability to read and understand the world around me was a cornerstone of my developmental years. The books I consumed as a child and young adult have deeply altered how I perceive the world as well as how I fit within its framework.
Some of the most influential books to me were from the mind of Daniel Handler, pen name "Lemony Snicket". Daniel wrote a thirteen-book series named "The Series of Unfortunate Events" This series follows a trio of orphaned siblings on the run from a man after their inheritance. As a child, this series was my favorite for its thrilling situations and advanced vocabulary. Going into middle school, I had a specialized interest in anything vernacular, so my young mind heavily appreciated the series' in-depth explanations of the events of the story. I would recommend this series to any student who appreciates the English language and daring adventures.
No one around me showed any interest in these books and without many friends to relate to, I relied on books like those of Daniel Handler for support. I saw the characters as inspiring; they were constantly escaping their unfortunate perils through wit and determination. It had become an unconscious goal of mine to never stop learning. I have expanded my goals to involve my career plans. I plan to use my education to become a public librarian, whether the world of "The Series of Unfortunate Events" filled with its scholarly characters was a direct inspiration to my life. I do not know.
The words of Daniel Handler have strongly influenced my goals. He has been an inspiration to me to spread information as far as I can reach. Currently, it is my goal to be more like the cunning children of the stories with a wide vocabulary and advanced literary knowledge. As I move forward with my life, I try to keep the lessons and morals of these books in mind as I navigate the world. Although I have not read these books in years, their contents have altered my life, and that is why they are some of the most influential books to me.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
Understanding our world and how it works has been a question that has defied language, borders, and time. Since the dawn of conciseness, humans have wondered why things happen like why rain falls, why bees fly, and how we play a role in our world. With the rise of fast information, it is easier than ever to look up how something works. Inventors and engineers try to make our lives easier to understand every day. The nature of our world still withholds questions we can only theorize about. From children to older adults, it is important to understand the basic facts of our world through both research and real-world events.
It is in human nature to understand and to learn, yet with the world at our fingertips, people are becoming less and less interested in the world around them, bussing themselves with social media and other forms of non-sensible content. Not understanding how the world works is detrimental to modern society. Culturally, we are too advanced for people to not understand basic information, including but not limited to; reading comprehension, currency, science, and writing. These skills should be available to all, as it is nearly impossible to succeed in the modern world without them.
It is within my current goals to provide information through librarianship. Libraries are one of the last places to be without providing currency to be there. I admire libraries for this without even mentioning the other services provided by the space. To provide information freely, to me, feels like the base of a strong, impactful community. I believe that the key to understanding the universe around you lies in the real-world experience of others before us, in the memoirs, research essays, and experiments of the past.
Without the past, there is no future and no present for us. History often repeats itself, and understanding how to avoid the worst is critical to the well-being of our culture. I often take time out of my day to research history through novels and papers written at the time of the events. I am currently fascinated by the stories of "The Radium Girls" Their stories help us understand the devastating side effects of radiation and how corporate greed can hinder the publication of life-saving research. In short, the women involved worked at a clock manufacturing company, painting numbers in luminescent paint during World War I. The women were told that the paint was completely harmless and even beneficial to their health. After being covered in this paint for months, these women were facing horrifying side effects that we now know were the effects of radiation poisoning. Without the works of great minds like Marie Curie, who is also known as the founding mother of modern physics and who discovered the effects of radium, we would have the mass effects of radiation poisoning to this day.
Without research and experiments to prove them, we as a culture could not achieve half of what we have today, and as a society, we should appreciate the hard work and dedication that has been put before us into understanding our universe. Discoveries happen every day and they often go unnoticed by the general population, no matter how much it can affect them in their daily lives. I strive to figure out new information about our universe by using the information found in years previous by those with advanced knowledge of the subject. Without the information of yesterday, we can never know what the future holds for us.

Libraries can be the backbone of a community, and the lifeblood of a helpful, supportive environment offering not only a space for housing books but a multitude of services and information provided by your local librarians and government. Today we can see libraries marginally going out of style. With the rise of fast technology and the isolation that it causes, it is not a surprising fact of life that these libraries desperately need the communities that built them. Many people do not realize how helpful these resources are. Some are even unaware that their town has a local library. I want to be a part of these impactful spaces. Helping others in a community in a safe, comfortable place with the resources provided would be a dream come true.
I was not very sociable growing up, and I found a sense of comfort between the steel shelves of my local chapter. Fantasies about staying there, with books in my arms, lingered in my mind. As a kid, I had often employed myself in organizing things about the house, including dolls, toys, and, of course, books. I had a dream of becoming a librarian to help others find their callings and to provide a place for imagination to blossom in the minds of others. Today I am an intern for the Locust Grove Public Library and can help the community in small yet impactful ways.
After the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the libraries' retention rate is at an all-time low. After years of rigorous quarantining in response, most people waved off the library as a non-essential space. The library struggles to get people through the door. To this day, we are reinstating the activities and programs that were lost only a few years ago. Trying to compose new ideas with the librarians can be challenging, but it is my favorite part about being there. I know that if I had an MLIS (Master's degree in Library Science) I could improve the overall quality and retention in my future place of business.
Using the help of scholarships like this one, I plan to enrich my education to aid local libraries. Gaining a complex understanding of database management and organization I would make shared information easier to access from a community standpoint. Giving my community the support and guidance needed to benefit others who otherwise would not have the opportunity to succeed is my ambition in this life. Our society would benefit from the knowledge and resources available from libraries on both a local and a global scale.
Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
I have played Minecraft recreationally for the better part of the last eight years with my brother. We have spent countless hours and many afternoons mining, farming, and crafting new, exciting bases. Minecraft has brought us closer together as siblings and I appreciate that every day. The open, sandbox layout gives people room to create whatever their heart desires there are no limits to what Minecraft can't build.
Personally, my favorite part of the game itself is farming and herding animals. Collecting items to use later in the game is very relaxing and a good way to blow off some steam after school. Repetitive tasks are a helpful tool for me to clear my head and think clearly, and farming in Minecraft is a good representative of and fun and creative way to regulate.
I think the game resonates so deeply with me because of memories made while playing with my brother. He and I are six years apart and have nearly nothing in common except our love of games. When he was born I had worried about a lack of common interest, and whether or not we would ever get along like other siblings I had seen on television. Luckily this timeless game became a great way to bond over. Although we have never beaten the game outright, it's never really mattered as long as we played together.
