    Priscilla Shireen Luke Scholarship
I grew up in a household of strong Black women who believe having an education is the successor in life. Despite not having completed college themselves, my family instilled in me the importance of education and how powerful of a tool it can be. They saw that at a very young age, I would go far in life and break this generation's burden of not finishing school. The cycles of poverty have disadvantaged Black communities across the nation, but our community does not let obstacles such as that keep us from finding a way to balance the cost of living. These setbacks have only built my character and shown me that sacrifices are necessary for me to have an educational journey and a better quality of life in the long run. With this scholarship money, I will be taking accountability for myself but also honoring the sacrifices and hard work of my family. I will be able to focus on my studies without worrying my entire family that I will not be the generation to reach new heights. A scholarship, for me, represents more than financial support. It is a testament to myself that I will continue to be great, get my Pre-Occupational Therapy degree, and finish what I came here to do. I chose my degree because of my love and passion for helping people and I can assure you that with a scholarship like this, I will continue to be an active member of the community. My long-term goal in life is to assist disabled people in low-income communities through my own clinic. I have witnessed firsthand the effects that uplifting people of impoverished, disabled, and minority backgrounds can have on community building and the quality of life. I have seen this in my own home through my youngest brother with autism. I grew up watching his occupational therapist assist him. His experience has inspired me to become a catalyst for change by providing support and resources for those overlooked. The mission of occupational therapy fully encapsulates what I seek in my career and daily life. I want to be able to help people participate in the daily activities that they want to participate in rather than what society seeks for them. By earning this scholarship, I will foster a supportive and inclusive environment while empowering individuals to achieve their potential. This is more than financial assistance. It is even more critical for me to recognize the hurdles my community has to jump through to get the resources they need as a person of color. This is an opportunity that will lead me to continue to enhance my ability to develop innovative and effective therapeutic programs and provide the resources to engage in advocacy initiatives. I am working towards creating a network of support that extends beyond my future clinic. I am committed to becoming a compassionate and dedicated occupational therapist by transforming lives today and strengthening communities with my clinic in the future.
