Modern day advancements in society have simultaneously presented both miraculous challenges and solutions to our previous ways of functioning. Our progressiveness in society has revolutionized how we understand technology, healthcare, economics, education, and our future. One particular category that has been dramatically evolving is our approach to technology. The exponential rise of utilizing technical platforms for everyday use has presented radical new ways of everyday living. Yet, it is important to question whether all of the radical ways of utilizing technology are better than our previous methods. For example, does speaking with someone through a screen yield the same in-person experience? Do online communities present the same feelings and experiences as in-person communities? The phenomenon of people utilizing online communities to socialize, educate themselves, and spend their time in is of interest to investigate. With an inquisitive perspective, it is interesting to compare and contrast the common accepted social norms of civil discourse and actions in any online community. Furthermore, the relationship between online interaction versus social interactions poses much intrigue due to the fast speed of which our society progresses in. One online community that has experienced dramatic progress of utilization is the online gaming community. In an age where it is no longer common to get together for game night, play board games, or cards, online gaming platforms have seemingly replaced previous extracurricular experiences. Notably, its effect on real-life social interaction is multifarious to break analyze. Upon investigation of the evolutions in society’s technology and it’s effect on real-life social interactions through the example of online gaming forums, it is critical to view this phenomenon with an open mind to the dynamic nature of society’s social norms. For example, on one hand, the effect on real-life social interactions from online gaming forums may alleviate stressors and anxieties of individuals who often experience symptoms in real-life situations. Therefore, this methods offers a way of communication within their means of comfort. Interestingly, on the other hand, real-life social interactions may be effected by online gaming platforms in the sense that individuals who crave real-life social interactions are prevented from fulfilling their socializing needs. Therefore, understanding that there is a duality in perspectives towards changing the common accepted social norms of civil discourses, especially in the phenomenon of online community platforms parallels the understanding other revolutionary sectors within society. Upon taking a broader approach to understanding the above quote, I believe it calls attention to how we understand the effects and phenomenons of society’s ever-going change. The example of the online gaming forums represents how our previous norms of socializing and everyday living are in a dynamic state. Whereas the dynamic state of everyday living methods pose changes to our discourse and actions, it is important to take an inclusive approach to how we think about, discuss, and revolutionize old ways. My learning of the importance for an inclusive approach extends beyond this quote into my everyday life and future. My education as well-rounded my knowledge in understanding science, technology, and economics. I am hopeful to carry out my passion for taking an inclusive approach to understanding health and healthcare in my pursuit to be a doctor and make a difference in the lives of others around me.

The enigma of the harp lies within the essence of its strings. I began playing the harp eight years ago and was surprised to discover that harpists devote substantially more time tuning their harp than playing out the tune. There are 36 strings that echo a harpist’s perseverance in achieving the final tune that emulates an equilibrium between force and elegance. Learning the art of fine-tuning my harp strings has cultivated my perseverance and dedication. Truthfully, like learning the dedicated process of tuning the strings on my harp, my culmination of altruistic volunteer, clinical, and research experiences has inspired my dedication to seeking a career in healthcare. Pursuing a profession in medicine will grant me the opportunity to make an impact in contributing to the health of our future populations. Volunteering in Peralta, Dominican Republic, and Port-Au-Prince, Haiti for Rush University’s Global Health Department was an invaluable opportunity that broadened my exposure to other healthcare populations and inspired my pursuit to make an impact on future generations’ healthcare. My first-hand experience witnessing the outcomes of global health disparities and health inequities has incited a passion for the pursuit of medicine. From my volunteer experiences I have learned the importance of the provision of health care in consideration of equity, nutrition, physical, and mental wellbeing in effective healthcare, with an interest in integrative medicine. This past year I proactively pursued a research opportunity at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health and obtained a CITI Certificate in social and behavioral focus. This role was invaluable in educating me about academic and clinical aspects of medicine through quantitative reasoning and analysis. Our research findings related to Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder have shown that individuals are often misdiagnosed with psychiatric disorders. This insight advanced my knowledge in the value of taking a holistic approach to understand, assess, and treat one’s health and quality of life. I discovered how one can be a catalyst for change in the advocacy of their community’s health during my collaboration with CVS Health’s Heart At Work campaign. Writing editorial features enabled me to broaden and apply my knowledge in cultural competence and social consciousness as a means to spread awareness on the health heroes of America who are committed to bridging the gap between socioeconomic and cultural boundaries in healthcare. The greatest barrier I face is my financial circumstance. Now, not only am I confronted with the fees of from attending undergrad for four years, but I am also now faced with the fees of two more years of undergrad from my post bacc program. My financial circumstances are suffering from tuition expenses. As a full-time student for the past four years and for the next two years, there is a lot of anxious uncertainty when it comes to my financial circumstances. Looking ahead I will also have the burden of medical school fees. These financial barriers present as monumental difficulties. I am hopeful to pursue my dream of serving others and making an impact in healthcare without the daily insurmountable weight of financing my tuition. It is with great hope that I am applying to this scholarship as a means of support in any way for my lifelong commitment to a career in bettering the health of future generations. Pursuing a degree in medicine will enable me to continue providing the compassion, responsibility, and capacity for improvement that I have developed through serving others. I am forever grateful to learning to play the harp because I have learned that our mind is the most powerful instrument, and if you tune it with care, it can produce a beautiful melody.
