Throughout my educational journey, my sister has been my steadfast supporter, playing a pivotal role in helping me reach my goals, particularly as I pursued my degree at Florida State University. Her support has been nothing short of transformative, guiding me through challenges and celebrating each milestone with me. Growing up, my sister took on a significant role in my life, stepping up to help raise me while our single mother worked tirelessly to provide for us. Her dedication and selflessness shaped my aspirations and taught me the value of perseverance. She became more than just a sibling; she was my mentor and role model. Her influence and support have been a constant source of motivation, especially as I navigated the complexities of preparing for college. When the time came to apply to colleges, including Florida State University, my sister’s support became even more crucial. Understanding the financial strain that college applications could impose, she stepped in to assist me both emotionally and financially. She ensured that I could focus on my studies and application process without the added stress of economic concerns. Her financial assistance was a lifeline, allowing me to invest in my future without distraction. One of the most memorable ways she supported me was through the college application process. She organized and accompanied me on college tours, regardless of how far we had to travel. These visits were not merely logistical but deeply personal experiences that allowed me to explore potential futures and make informed decisions about where I wanted to study. Her dedication to ensuring I had a comprehensive view of my options was invaluable. In addition to these tours, my sister played a hands-on role in preparing my application materials. She helped me craft a standout resume and refine my personal essays, offering insightful feedback and encouragement. Her assistance was not just about making sure my applications were polished but also about helping me present my story authentically and compellingly. Beyond the practical aspects of college preparation, my sister provided unwavering emotional support. When I faced moments of doubt or stress, she was there to offer encouragement and remind me of my capabilities. Her belief in me helped me navigate the uncertainties of this journey and stay focused on my goals. As I continue my studies at Florida State University, pursuing a degree in political science with aspirations of becoming an intellectual property lawyer, I carry with me the lessons and strength my sister has imparted. Her sacrifices and dedication have not only helped me achieve my academic goals but have also inspired me to give back to my community and strive for excellence in all I do. Her support has been the bedrock of my success, and I am deeply grateful for her unwavering commitment to my future.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
A trophy, a title, or a singular moment of recognition does not define my greatest achievement to date. It is my very presence at Florida State University, a dream that once felt so far away, it may as well have been another universe. I come from a low-income neighborhood in Miami, raised in a single-parent household, where opportunities felt rare and hope was often overshadowed by survival. But against all odds, I made it out. I made it to college. I made it to FSU.
Growing up in poverty instilled in me a sense of resilience that few others understand. I didn’t have the luxury of tutors, summer programs, or financial stability. My family couldn’t write a check to solve a problem, and college savings accounts were never an option. Every step forward came with sacrifice, hustle, and perseverance. I am a person of color who grew up in an environment where the odds were stacked against me, and many around me never made it out. But I was determined to break that cycle, not just for myself but for my family and my community.
My mother, a single parent, worked tirelessly to provide for me with the limited resources we had. Her love was abundant, but her income wasn’t. We often had to make impossible Choices, including groceries or gas and rent or the electric bill. Despite all of this, she made sure I knew. the value of education. She taught me that even if we didn’t have much, I had the power to create a future for myself through my determination and work ethic. That lesson became my anchor.
There were many moments along the way when the weight of my circumstances felt overwhelming. Applying to college without enough money to cover application fees, going to school events in hand-me-down clothes, and often staying up late to study in a noisy home weren’t just obstacles; they were my reality. But each challenge shaped me. They forced me to grow up faster, to be resourceful, and to never let my circumstances define my worth or potential.
Getting accepted to Florida State University was one of the most surreal moments of my life. I remember crying when I opened the acceptance letter. It wasn’t just a college admission; it was proof that all the late nights, the tears, the doubts, and the fight had been worth it. It was a moment that validated my belief that no matter where you come from, your dreams are valid and achievable.
Being at FSU has taught me even more about who I am and what I’m capable of. It’s also brought its own set of challenges. As a first-generation college student, I don’t always have someone at home who understands what I’m going through or who can guide me through the complexities of higher education. Financial stress is a constant presence. I still worry about whether I’ll have enough to cover textbooks, housing, or even food some weeks. But I keep going because I have to. Because I want to.
Through all of this, I’ve learned that I am stronger than I ever imagined. I’ve learned that success is not just about natural talent or opportunity; it’s about grit, heart, and the willingness to keep showing up, even when everything inside you is telling you to quit. I’ve learned that representation matters and that my presence in these academic spaces isn’t just for me; it’s for every kid back home who doesn’t see people who look like them making it.
Looking ahead, I plan to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and continue to pursue my master’s. I want to use my education to advocate for underserved communities, to fight for systemic change, and to create opportunities for those who come from backgrounds like mine. I see myself becoming a leader who uplifts others, using my voice and my story to inspire and empower. I also hope to mentor young people from low-income neighborhoods to show them that where you start does not have to determine where you finish.
My journey has been anything but easy, but it has been worth every challenge. I am proud of how far I’ve come, and I am even more excited for what’s ahead. My story is not just one of survival but of triumph, resilience, and relentless hope. And this is just the beginning.
