As I grew up, my classmates would express their opinion that the middle child was the worst position to be in as a sibling. As a child with an impressionable mind, I believed this for quite a wedge of time. But fortunately, I have completely changed my views on being a middle child because it was the greatest gift I could have ever received. I was able to have the most admirable older brother I could have. My brother, Michael is the reason I was able to have the knowledge and courage to choose Computer Science as my major. Michael has been mentoring me and was my first teacher for my major. Michael taught me how to code, how to make my first video game and has been guiding me since I chose Computer Science as my major. Before I chose computer science, I was hesitant, as the field was dominated by men. I felt intimidated and small but my big brother was there for me to give me the confidence that I possessed the skills to excel in computer science and contribute to the opportunities technology is unraveling to society. My education at my university has given me an abundance of skills that I will continue to use for a lifetime. Not only will I become a Software Engineer, but I will be designing and creating games on a software called Unity. My brother introduced me to Unity and it is the software I used to make my first video game. I plan on becoming as comfortable with Unity as possible and then becoming acquainted with a video game development tool called Unreal Engine. It's been a dream of mine to create an open-world game that mesmerizes players the same way open-world games have done for me. The first open-world game I experienced, I was astonished because every side quest, place to explore, and side character was purposely made for the player to find. The idea of creating an entire world has piqued my interest since those moments. I plan on designing and coding a deeply thought-out world with my big brother. When it's completed, we hope to launch it as an app for consumers to download for free. As a woman in STEM, I will always possess deep gratitude for my brother because, without his guidance, I do not think I would have developed the passion for computer science and game design the way I have today. I am so proud to say I am a woman in STEM because I can show women every day that we are capable the same way my big brother has shown me.
