Many of those around me have experienced abuse as a child, the most common one is sexual abuse. The first time I heard my friend tell me their sexual abuse story my stomach went sour and I became lightheaded. The second time I heard someone I love tell me they were sexually abused I had the same reaction. Finally, someone in my family, who is still a minor, told me they were sexually abused and I knew that I wanted to stop this from happening. This is how I found the social work degree and I knew this is what I wanted to do.
I found a fantastic graduate program to receive my social work degree. The University of Denver is not only a great school, but they have a localized program in my small town. This program focuses on teaching students how to be a social worker in such a small area with cultural diversity.
While doing research on social work degrees and jobs I want in the future, I discovered that the social work office in my area has gotten in trouble for not doing their job. I want to be the person that changes this. I want to use my degree to fix the broken system in my area and stop abuse from happening to children. Most importantly, I want to help these children heal.
