Through exile, I lost my childhood memories, but I gained the same time resiliency to keep going no matter what and to work hard for a better and more secure life.

I was born in Burundi, a small country in East Africa. When I was 11, political unrest forced my family to flee, transforming me from a child who lacked nothing into a refugee. Life in this new reality taught me dedication, resilience, and the value of hard work. In 2015, we sought refuge in Rwanda, enduring challenging conditions in a refugee camp. After 3 years and 3 months of hardship, my family and I were fortunate enough to relocate and settle in Canada. Facing language barriers, I took on the responsibility of managing my family's affairs, handling documents, scheduling doctor's appointments, and managing bills. At the young age of 18, I juggled three jobs to provide support for my parents while also obtaining my driver's license and graduating high school with honors. After enduring the hardships back home and in the refugee camps, I recognized that education would be my pathway to a better and brighter future. I understood that the change I aspired to see in the world needed to begin with my education. I firmly believed that my survival had a purpose and that my life needed to make a meaningful impact. Right from the start, my goal was clear – I aimed to major in Public Health in college. Through research, I realized how I could directly impact lives, particularly those of immigrants and individuals in refugee camps. Despite residing in Montreal, I struggled to find the right program for my aspirations. Fortunately, my siblings in Portland, ME, informed me about a university offering the program I desired. I applied, and was accepted, but encountered financial obstacles. Like many immigrant parents, mine was unable to save for our education. I applied for a Canadian loan to study abroad, which I got. It was only going to cover a semester. Unfortunately, I tried to appeal so that I could get more money but my request was denied. I had to come up with the rest on my own. I tirelessly searched for campus jobs or scholarships tailored for international students. However, despite my best efforts, I find myself facing significant challenges in meeting the entirety of my educational expenses. Winning this scholarship would significantly assist in covering my upcoming semester's tuition fees. I am humbly requesting your consideration for a scholarship to aid in continuing my education. My goal upon completing my bachelor's degree is to pursue a master's in Public Health. I aspire to aid refugees, and immigrants, and ultimately return to Burundi, utilizing my knowledge to contribute to the betterment of my homeland. Your investment in my education will not only shape my future but also contribute to the advancement of public health initiatives worldwide.
