To have a Filipino pride is to be able to showcase my insights and culture inside me; I have always been proud to be a "probinsyana", a girl who grew up in a peaceful province of La Union and grateful enough for having the special dishes for 'Ilocanos' which are dinakdakan, bagnet, and pinakbet. Those are the food that will always be top tier and will never be replaced by American dishes. As I grow up in the Philippines and move into the United States, I learned various things; Filipinos are hard driven into their dreams and Filipinos are hospitable regardless of how incapable they are. Competitiveness is something in our culture that will always be within me, academically and socially. I know what I want and I know my capabilities. With that being said, I will pursue the medical field, because that is where I see myself in; Nursing would be the most common field where the most Filipino students want to be in, primarily due to its in demand specialty. I want to be a Doctor, to be able to have the abilities to cure and help people in illnesses and at least have the ability to lessen hypertensive patients, which is the most common disease in our Culture.
I was raised knowing we are not capable enough to have a luxurious lifestyle because I am being raised by a hard working single mother. The biggest survival situation we both have is having the capability to graduate in college, additionally, go to medical school afterwards. Being a senior in High School, only supported by a single mother, I fully depend on financial aid and scholarships. Knowing, scholarships have different standards, and I am aware how hard it is to fit myself in it. With that being said, this kind of scholarship that fully prioritized Filipinos, strengthen my confidence and thinking that there is still hope in getting financial support in the midst of competitive industry. This opportunity symbolizes hope in me, a hope that enlightens my dreams to be included in the medical industry. I hope that I will be included in this scholarship, with a trust from the organization that I will fulfill my goals and responsibilities not only to be a nursing student but also to be Filipino student in a foreign country. Being a daughter of single mother with a lot of financial responsibilities, it is a crisis for us thinking how are we going to fulfill all of the expenses in college knowing there are big difference between peso and dollar.
I aspire to be a doctor, not because I am a Filipino and that is the most common path to have, but because it is where my strengths belong. The interests I have in the medical field strengthen from the people surrounding me and from the culture that I have grown. I grew up being fully aware how medical care might affect people who cannot afford it, those incapable people in medical care they should have. These people inspire me to be a Doctor to have the ability to reduce the illnesses that affect the lifestyle of many residents. As someone who grew up in a Filipino household, 'Hypertension' is the most common disease of Filipinos, unfortunately; also the most common cause of death of some people. I want to be the source of knowledge and source of medical support of people especially those around me, Lolo, Lola, Auntie and my Mama; I aspire to be the one who has the knowledge to spread awareness and medication to people who needs it.
