    David G. Sutton Memorial Scholarship
Swimming has been a huge part of my life for almost 10 years now. However, a couple of years ago, I was about ready to quit. I felt burnt out and defeated after failing to improve my times in my best events for several seasons, even after an extreme amount of time and effort. My club swimming coach, whom I had loved, resigning almost drove me to make that decision - how would I make it without him? Then, in the spring of 2022, Coach Seth joined the program and genuinely changed my life, not just my swimming. He helped me regain the confidence I had lost through technique improvements, thorough explanations for every single thing we did, and making practice something I looked forward to again. Based on the description of this scholarship, Seth is to me what David was to so many athletes: a coach who seeks to improve the lives of their athletes in and out of the sport, someone athletes can trust to be there for them through thick and thin, and someone who genuinely cares about their athlete's wellbeing and happiness. Seth genuinely made me love swimming all over again, and I don't know where I would be today without his support and guidance. He has taught me so much in the limited time I've been training under him, and I know I will always be thankful to him for the life lessons and faith in my abilities he has given me. Along with being a swimmer, I have also been a coach myself since I was 14. Whether it be teaching swim lessons to tiny children or helping with the middle school group, I've had experiences with all ages. As most of my kids will tell you, I absolutely check the booming voice box, although I know that's not the important part here. I do my best to be more than just a coach to them; I always let them know that I'm available to lend them an ear if needed, and I will always check in if I notice something is off. As an athlete myself, I understand how important it is to be healthy in all aspects of yourself, and I recognize that sometimes, the sport doesn't come first. On the other hand, I know that sometimes the kids need a push from me, and I will always do my best to push them to their greatest. Compassion and faith in their athletes are two of the most important qualities a coach can have, which I believe David had in spades, and which I hope to exemplify to my athletes every day.
