NE1 NE-Dream Scholarship
My mom always tells me that I have a 'giving heart'. As a child I thought it was a complicated way to say I was a nice person, but as I got older I realized it was much deeper than that. My ability to connect with people who seem as if we have nothing in common, and my ability to apply critical thinking skills in daily concerns and make sure everyone finds the best in themselves is what got me the reputation of mediator in my social circles.
When trying to figure out where I wanted to go in my life I thought a lot about my love for people and how I could incorporate that into my career. When working in the dining room of a Senior Living facility I quickly recognized the importance of understanding people and making sure that they are educated and up to date on their treatments so that they feel as if they are a part of the process and not a test subject.
A lot of times these residents would be taking medication during their meal times and I could see the uncertainty and hesitation on their faces. I knew that they were unsure of what they were taking or how it would affect them. It made them feel as if they were dependent on their medications in a way that held them down in life. I knew that that was far from the truth and I wished that I could be able to educate them on the importance of their medications and that they are not being held back from being themselves and living their lives fully.
As a pharmacist I know I can effectively make a positive impact on their lives and give them the assurance and knowledge they need to be able to move on with life having a sense of control and independence. This is only one of the avenues I can take as a Pharmacist to better my community and it is extremely impactful. The more I research into this career and gain experience I am amazed at the vitality and applicability of this career. It gives me a way to put my 'giving heart' to use and make sure people know that their healthcare team is working with them and not just on them. I believe this scholarship will grant me the opportunity to comfortably pursue my dreams and be the medical advocate I know I can be.
Eden Alaine Memorial Scholarship
My great-aunt was a beacon of light for our family. She was our role model and the family's Matriarch. It's like she knew everything about everything. She was an incredibly intelligent woman socially, emotionally, and academically. She was a talented cook and a beautiful person.
We'd go over to her home in Texas whenever we could and she never failed to make us a mind-blowing breakfast every time we came to visit. Complete with sausages, biscuits, gravy, french toast, and bacon. I always would go to her for advice since she was such a successful woman. She graduated with a degree in Chemistry and worked at a water plant in Texas and her two sons became a Doctor and Engineer.
I will always remember her by the sweet smell of a loving home, when my parents immigrated to the US she was there to help them out and get them situated. She stepped over the role of a great aunt at times and was more like our grandmother. Whenever I was there we would stay up after everyone else went to bed to drink tea and talk. I took in so much wisdom just by being in her presence.
Through her, I learned that the two things you need to be successful in life are perseverance and love. She told me that whenever it gets tough you think about all the people who loved you enough to make sacrifices to get you to where you are today.
That opened my eyes to all my parents have done for me and the sacrifice my grandparents made by praying for me every day. It helped me realize that my siblings see me in a higher regard than I see myself. These revelations redirected the trajectory of my life in a magnitude I will never know.
It made me realize what a gift my life is and what a privilege it is to be able to go to college and study. After those talks, I always walked away with a deeper understanding of life. So when our great-aunt was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer I was stunned. She had a rapid development of dementia and went from cooking our breakfast to not being able to feed herself.
It was one of the scariest experiences I have ever had. We went over to see her more frequently and spend as much time with her as we could, but she sadly passed away this January. Her words of wisdom will forever live on in my heart and be a constant guide to my true priorities in life. I love you, Auntie Susie.

Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
Mario Kart is my favorite game to play in co-op mode because it brings people together and creates cherished memories. One memorable multiplayer session occurred during the holiday season when my great-aunt fell ill. Despite the somber atmosphere, my cousins and I found solace and distraction in Mario Kart. With the Nintendo console set up in the living room, we eagerly grabbed our controllers, ready to embark on the competition.
As we selected our favorite characters and courses, laughter filled the room, momentarily lifting the heaviness that hung in the air. The familiar jingles of the game's soundtrack brought back memories of carefree days spent gaming together as children, reminding us of the bond we shared as cousins.
Mario Kart became a symbol of togetherness and family bonds, providing moments of joy amidst uncertainty. It remains a cherished memory of finding solace in simple pleasures and the strength of family.
To this day, whenever I fire up Mario Kart for a multiplayer session, I am transported back to that holiday season, surrounded by loved ones, united in laughter and love. For me, Mario Kart will always be more than just a game; it's a testament to the power of play, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring bonds of family.

Spider-Man Showdown Scholarship
In the vast cinematic universe of Spider-Man, where Tobey Maguire's earnest portrayal, Andrew Garfield's fiery determination, and Tom Holland's youthful exuberance have each left an indelible mark, it's Tom Holland's rendition that resonates with me the most. As a college freshman, I've had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of Spider-Man on the big screen, and for me, Tom Holland's portrayal stands out as the quintessential embodiment of the beloved superhero.
What sets Tom Holland apart is his ability to capture the essence of Peter Parker's character – a relatable, imperfect teenager grappling with the immense responsibility of being a superhero. Holland effortlessly brings to life the awkward charm, endearing vulnerability, and quick-witted humor that define Peter Parker in the comics. His portrayal feels authentic and grounded, making it easy for audiences to empathize with Peter's struggles and triumphs.
One of the aspects I appreciate most about Tom Holland's Spider-Man is his portrayal of Peter's journey as a young hero coming into his own. Unlike his predecessors, who portrayed Peter as either a college student or a young adult, Holland's Peter is depicted as a high school student navigating the challenges of adolescence while simultaneously juggling the responsibilities of being a superhero. This portrayal adds a layer of authenticity to the character, allowing audiences to see Peter grow and mature over time, much like they do themselves.
Furthermore, Holland's Spider-Man is characterized by his relatable imperfections and propensity for making mistakes. Peter Parker is not infallible; he's a teenager still learning the ropes of being a hero. Holland portrays this aspect of the character flawlessly, showcasing Peter's moments of doubt, insecurity, and self-discovery. Whether he's struggling to master his new suit's capabilities or facing off against formidable foes, Holland's portrayal highlights Peter's resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
Additionally, Holland's chemistry with the supporting cast, particularly with Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man, adds depth and emotional resonance to his character arc. The mentor-mentee dynamic between Peter and Tony not only enhances the storytelling but also provides insights into Peter's growth as a hero and a person.
In conclusion, Tom Holland's portrayal of Spider-Man resonates with me on a deeply personal level because he embodies the spirit of Peter Parker in a way that feels genuine and authentic. His portrayal captures the essence of a teenager navigating the complexities of life while trying to live up to the responsibilities thrust upon him. Through his endearing portrayal, Holland has cemented himself as my favorite Spider-Man, showcasing the humanity, vulnerability, and resilience that define the iconic superhero.
Eras Tour Farewell Fan Scholarship
As I reminisce about my journey from soccer practice sessions to the threshold of college, Taylor Swift's music emerges as a constant companion, accompanying me through the highs and lows of adolescence. Beyond The C.L.O.U.D Scholarship
In my junior year of high school, I found myself working at a local senior living facility, assisting with care and meal distribution. Initially, I didn't anticipate a significant impact, but this experience profoundly shaped me. Witnessing firsthand how healthcare influenced the daily lives of elderly residents was extremely eye-opening. I observed the challenges they faced with medications, from accessibility issues to adverse side effects and the reluctance to acknowledge their health conditions. Which then led to them ignoring the responsibility of taking their medicine on time and in a healthy manner.
This exposure ignited a passion within me to make a difference in healthcare. Motivated by this realization, I seized an opportunity to participate in an intensive Pharmacy camp. Over four weeks, I delved into the intricacies of the field, solidifying my resolve to pursue a career in Pharmacy. We explored the importance of Narcan and using a Deteraa bag to properly dispose extra medication.
However, as I embarked on this path, I encountered a daunting obstacle: the financial burden associated with education in this field. The cost of tuition and other expenses seemed insurmountable, casting doubt on my ability to pursue my aspirations. This scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it symbolizes an opportunity to realize my dreams and make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Moreover, I am dedicated to contributing to the STEM community by leveraging my education to address healthcare disparities and improve access to essential medications and treatments. I aspire to bridge the gap between healthcare providers and underserved populations, ensuring that everyone receives the care and attention they deserve.
In conclusion, I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship, as it represents a crucial step towards achieving my goals and making a positive impact in the world of Pharmacy and healthcare. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I will not only fulfill my aspirations but also contribute meaningfully to the STEM community and society as a whole.

Hampton Roads Unity "Be a Pillar" Scholarship
As a freshman in college, I found myself navigating a world full of new experiences. Little did I know that one particular encounter would leave a huge mark on my journey, influencing my future activism and shaping the way I perceived the LGBTQIA+ community.
It all began during my first semester, when I joined a campus organization focused on promoting diversity and inclusivity. As someone who had grown up in a small town with limited exposure to different cultures and identities, I was eager to broaden my horizons. The organization provided a platform for students to share their stories, fostering an environment where everyone felt seen and heard.
One evening, the guest speaker for the event was Alex, a charismatic individual who identified as non-binary. They shared their personal journey of self-discovery, recounting the challenges they faced and the triumphs they celebrated along the way. Alex's authenticity and vulnerability resonated with everyone in the room, creating an effect of empathy that touched each of us.
Listening to Alex's story, I couldn't help but reflect on the privilege I had taken for granted. Growing up in a heteronormative environment, I had never truly grasped the extent of the struggles faced by those in the LGBTQIA+ community. Alex's narrative served as a wake-up call, challenging me to confront my own biases and question societal norms that perpetuated discrimination.
Inspired by Alex's courage, I decided to delve deeper into LGBTQIA+ issues. I began attending workshops, engaging in conversations with members of the community, and educating myself on the history of LGBTQIA+ rights. The more I learned, the more I realized the systemic barriers and prejudices that persisted.
As my awareness expanded, so did my commitment to advocacy. I joined forces with like-minded individuals within the organization, and together we initiated campaigns to promote inclusivity on campus. We organized awareness events, collaborated with local LGBTQIA+ organizations, and fostered open dialogues within our community.
As I delved deeper into my activism, I found myself drawn to community organizing and policy advocacy. I recognized the need for systemic change to dismantle the deeply rooted
prejudices embedded in our society. My experiences with Alex had transformed my perspective to be willing to use my voice to amplify marginalized narratives and fight for justice.
I am becoming involved in larger movements advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights beyond the confines of my college campus. I attended rallies, lobbied for inclusive policies, and collaborated with activists from diverse backgrounds. My goal was no longer merely to raise awareness but to actively contribute to dismantling the structures that perpetuated discrimination.
Reflecting on my journey, I realized that my initial encounter with Alex had not only opened my eyes to the struggles faced by the LGBTQIA+ community but had also sparked a flame within me. The friendships, stories, and experiences shared during my college years had become the driving force behind my commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive world.
I carry with me the invaluable lessons learned from those who bravely shared their stories. The impact of the LGBTQIA+ community on my life has not only shaped my plans for future activism but has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to continue the fight for a world where every individual can live authentically, free from discrimination and prejudice.
Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
In the quiet corners of my home, my story unfolds— a young girl with unwavering determination and hope to become a Pharmacist. As a hopeful student navigating the complex maze of school, my journey sheds light on the need for more support in my education.
Born into a humble home, the shadows of financial hardship loomed large over my educational aspirations. My immigrant parents worked day and night to keep my siblings and me fed, warm, and happy. Each step towards knowledge was a hard climb, an uphill battle against financial barriers that threatened to halt my dreams. Because of their financial burdens, it was not possible for me to join sports teams since the fees were too costly. Despite the hurdles, my hunger for learning and experience burned brightly. So I looked towards an experience I could afford, volunteering. I volunteered at my local soup kitchen and also taught at a Sunday school nearby. This gave me the opportunity to learn from a hands-on experience of the world and appreciate what I have.
The turning point in my story happened when my family's situation cast a daunting shadow over my education. The harsh reality of choosing between school and the pressing demands of daily life became a terrifying dilemma. The weight of responsibility as the eldest daughter settled heavily on my shoulders, leaving little room for the academic dreams that had once seemed within reach. Thankfully I got enough loans to attend, but paying them back is a whole other issue.
This scholarship represents a lifeline to a future that overcomes negative circumstances. It is the bridge between dreams and reality, a beacon of hope that promises to lift me from the clutches of hardship. The scholarship is not just about alleviating financial burdens; it is about granting access to a realm of possibilities previously blocked by economic limitations.
In my life, I will not let anything come between my unwavering commitment to education. This scholarship is not only an investment in my academic endeavors but a testament to the transformative power of education. It is a plea to break the cycle of financial constraints, carve a path toward a brighter future, and a chance to rewrite the story of my life with the undeniable scent of perseverance. I can not wait to leave my legacy to my three younger siblings who look up to me and all those immigrant children like me who dream of something bigger. So they can see that they have a chance just like I did.
Colby R. Eggleston and Kyla Lee Entrepreneurship Award
People are dying every day due to a lack of access to their medications, with the introduction and evolution of AI in our daily lives I created a proposal that will blow anyone's socks off.
I'm in school to become a Pharmacist on the undergraduate chemistry track. At my college there is a path I can take to get my PharmD and MBA at the same time, this will be one of my greatest assets in pursuing this endeavor. Secondly, I have plenty of experience dealing with the elders in my community from working at a nursing home and I got to witness their struggle with prescriptions. This experience has fueled my determination to bridge the gap between the healthcare system and the community.
I believe I can make an enormous impact on the livelihoods of those people and nearly everyone in the community. Busy mothers who do not have time to pick up meds during the day or young people who have a difficult time understanding where and when they can pick up their medicine. I introduce to you 'Bag-a-Med', with the help of business alumni at my college and investor funds I plan on buying out every private and retail pharmacy in my city and incorporating AI technology to sort, count, prescribe, and deliver these medications to people all around the world. This technology will wipe out the need for constant staffing and decimate the issue of short opening hours.
With additional AI security measures and a licensed Pharmacist in charge (me), I could easily resolve the issues tons of people face with their medications. Moreover, the integration of AI security measures and my oversight as a licensed Pharmacist adds an extra layer of reassurance. This approach ensures not only the seamless delivery of medications but also guarantees the highest standards of safety and accuracy. By addressing the critical issues surrounding medication access, 'Bag-a-Med' has the potential to transform the lives of countless individuals in the community and beyond. This proposal stands as a testament to my entrepreneurial mindset and expertise to make a meaningful impact on public health and well-being.
I know this will take a lot of years to come true but I stand by it and believe that it has unlimited potential to become a business that people will rely on for centuries. No more waiting in line for prescriptions or awkward eye contact at the local CVS. This right here will be the biggest thing since sliced bread.
"The Summer I Turned Pretty" Fan Scholarship
Cheering for Team Conrad in Jenny Han's "The Summer I Turned Pretty" series is a no-brainer for me, especially considering the rollercoaster of emotions Conrad takes us on. His character development is top-notch, and I'm all about those deep, relatable moments that hit you right in the feels.
Conrad's journey is a maze of family expectations, personal goals, and past slip-ups, and I love how the series doesn't shy away from the messy stuff. Those moments of vulnerability make him real, you know? Like, we get to see behind the tough exterior, and it is not just about swoon-worthy romance but about understanding someone on a whole different level.
And the connection between Conrad and Belly? It's the stuff of high school dreams. Those shared histories, the ups and downs – it's like a real, messy, and authentic relationship. Their dynamic is so palpable, keeping you hooked with all the "will they, won't they" tension. The series isn't just about ships sailing; it's about personal growth and navigating the complexities of relationships, and Conrad's character adds that extra layer, which I love.
Speaking of growth, Conrad's transformation throughout the series is a major selling point for Team Conrad. Watching someone grapple with their own stuff, facing insecurities, and coming out the other side stronger – that's the kind of journey that keeps you invested. It's not just about romance; it's about self-discovery and redemption, which hits home as we navigate the messy transition from high school to whatever comes next.
Sure, there are other love interests in the mix, but Conrad's storyline has this inevitable and genuine vibe that's hard to resist. The shared history, unspoken feelings, and the evolution of their relationship – it's high school drama at its finest. Team Conrad all the way, rooted in the emotional rollercoaster that is "The Summer I Turned Pretty" series.
So, here I am, waving the Team Conrad flag like a senior caught up in the whirlwind of high school emotions. Jenny Han crafted a narrative that hits close to home, with Conrad embodying the complexities of real-life relationships. It's not about rooting for the bad boy; it's about rooting for the guy who is just figuring things out, just like we are in this pivotal year of our lives. The series is a symphony of shared histories and evolving connections, and Conrad's character brings the perfect mix of intensity and vulnerability.
“Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
To take on a fresh otherworldly foe in "Stranger Things," I would put together a group that included Dustin Henderson, Chief Jim Hopper, and Eleven.
First of all, Eleven is a powerful opponent to supernatural dangers due to her telekinetic and telepathic powers. Her special abilities, developed through the course of the show's trials, offer the squad a significant advantage when facing any extraterrestrial foes. Eleven is a great asset in the face of danger because of her tenacity and fortitude.
Chief Jim Hopper would be an invaluable member of the team because of his background as the police chief of Hawkins and his leadership and strategic thinking skills. Hopper is a great leader because of his risk-taking spirit and no-nonsense approach. His natural tendency to shield others, especially Eleven, gives the group an emotional depth that may inspire them to overcome challenges.
Last but not least, Dustin Henderson is a valuable member of the team due to his intellect, inventiveness, and humor. Whether it's overcoming the difficulties of puberty or coping with the Upside Down, Dustin has constantly demonstrated a knack for problem-solving. His friendship with the other team members gives the group a playful energy and helps them feel united against otherworldly threats.
Eleven, Chief Hopper, and Dustin combined to create a well-rounded team that included strength, cunning, and fortitude. Together with their particular traits, they would form a formidable team that could defeat any new supernatural threat facing Hawkins.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
An important lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's 'GUTS' album is one from her song 'the grudge'. It goes like this, "and I doubt you ever think about the damage that you did but I hold on to every detail like my life depends on it". Olivia Rodrigo's lyric from 'the grudge' resonates deeply with the authenticity of teenage heartbreak, capturing the essence of emotions that often accompany such experiences. The poignant line shows the complex dynamics of relationships in the troubling landscape of adolescence.
Amid heartbreak, teens, with their limited emotional experiences, often internalize the pain, questioning themselves and wondering what went wrong. The lyric highlights the tendency to turn inward when faced with a failed connection. However, the maturity in the lyrics emerges as Olivia Rodrigo recognizes that the responsibility for the damage isn't solely hers; it's a shared burden. The emotional dissonance depicted in Rodrigo's 'the grudge' lyric amplifies the struggle of navigating teenage heartbreak. It's like trying to walk on a tightrope while juggling emotions, especially when there's a stark contrast in how much each person is affected. The lyric underscores the challenge of moving forward when you're holding onto every detail, but the other party seems indifferent. It's a harsh reality check about the unequal emotional investment in relationships, a challenge that hits hard and lies in finding balance amid the chaos.
The acknowledgment that the other person played a role in the emotional turmoil signifies a level of emotional maturity. The lyric becomes an illustration of self-awareness, a realization that relationships are a two-way street where both parties contribute to the highs and lows.
Moreover, the lyric unveils a bittersweet realization – the contrast in the amount of emotional investment each person had. While Rodrigo clings to every detail, treating it as if her life depended on it, she acknowledges that the guy doesn't share the same sentiment. This recognition speaks to the inequality in emotional investment, a common facet of many teenage relationships. Especially at the time I listened to it, it spoke to my situation and unveiled what I was dealing with.
For me, this lyric serves as a powerful revelation. It becomes a catalyst for self-discovery and a reminder of my worth in relationships. Understanding that I deserve more than someone who fails to recognize the impact they had on me is a huge realization. Olivia Rodrigo's lyrical expression guided me towards a sense of self-respect and the recognition that genuine care and consideration should be mutual in any relationship. It serves as a reminder that my emotions are valid, and I deserve a connection where both parties are invested in understanding and appreciating the impact we have on each other's lives.

1. Hi, my name is Ananya Mathew and I am an Indian immigrant. I moved here when I was two years old but those two years made a significant impact on my life compared to my native-born peers. I have three younger siblings and I gratefully moved here with both my parents. I came here because my mother had qualified for a job here. Since my parents are still Indian citizens and love their culture and believe in the importance of passing it on to their children I was placed into traditional Indian dance and was heavily involved in the Indian immigrant community frequently as a child. I was also kept away from the majority of American influences.
2. As an immigrant the hardest part was adapting to the social norms and popular culture I interacted with every day. As my parents were quite sheltering the only experience I had with the true Americans was when I was in school. This led me to miss out on culturally significant music and shows. Which eventually led me to feel disconnected from the people my age since we had little to nothing in similarity.
3. Since starting my journey I have realized how much my parents sacrificed for me to have better opportunities. As a college student and emerging adult, I am constantly wondering how my parents made it so far without any guidance and how they managed to make friends, work, raise a family, and further their education. Especially after leaving all their family and loved ones back home. They taught me that I should have no excuses when it comes to life and that the best way to get out of a challenging situation is to work through it because there are no shortcuts.
4. This journey has impacted my life and career choices by enforcing the importance of people skills and dressing well. It forced me to contemplate the structure of American society at a young age and understand what I need to do to become a well-rounded and successful individual. I grew up watching my father reading self-help books to understand how people in the States thought and went about their lives. I saw my mother inviting her American friends over and wondering how to host them because she didn't know what they wanted. I grew up teaching my siblings the songs and movies to know so they wouldn't feel left out of conversations in school.

Under the gentle warmth of the sun, our family gathered at the lakeside, knowing this could be my grandfather's final fishing expedition after a recent heart attack had confined him to his home. Despite his physical limitations, the glint of enthusiasm for fishing remained in his eyes. He would constantly reminisce about going out fishing with his father and brothers and our family thought it would be a good idea to take him out on a fishing trip. During our preparations, I saw him struggle with a stubborn fishing rod, the frustration plastered on his face.
Driven by the desire to cherish this time with my grandpa, I took the initiative. Armed with a toolkit I found lying on the trunk, I methodically dismantled the rod, exposing its underlying issues—a misaligned reel. Deftly wielding needle-nose pliers, I made precise adjustments to the troubled gear responsible. The meticulous work of a mini screwdriver followed, ensuring each turn was right. The once messed-up reel succumbed to the finesse of my hands, the audible click of components falling back into harmonious alignment marking the restoration process. This impromptu repair session showcased the fusion of classroom learning and real-world application, a testament to the education I was receiving. I couldn't ignore the subtle pride in my accomplishment. The moment resonated with a college freshman navigating through the transition from theoretical understanding to hands-on proficiency.
With the fishing rod now restored, I showed it to my grandfather. Gratitude shone in his eyes, and the weight of potential disappointment lifted. The fishing trip evolved into a celebration of family bonds, and a new-found appreciation of my tinkering skills.
As we cast our lines into the water, the repaired rod symbolized more than a mere mechanical triumph; it became a beacon of hope. As our lines gracefully cut through the water, the repaired rod served as a metaphor for the transformative journey we were on—a journey where challenges were met with a blend of intellect and hands-on expertise. The ripple effect of that seemingly ordinary repair reverberated not just through the lake but through the fabric of our family narrative, leaving an indelible mark on a day that could have been a somber day into a cherished memory. The echo of the clicking reel brought back the anticipation and joy reflected in my grandfather, giving him one more chance to experience a memorable day by the lakeside.

Within the corridors of the nursing home where I volunteered, a mentor emerged, guiding me on a transformative journey toward confidence and self-belief. Her name was Mrs. Turner, an elderly woman grappling with schizophrenia, whose resilience and wisdom left an undeniable mark on my heart and also played a pivotal role in shaping my aspirations to become a pharmacist.
Volunteering at the nursing home introduced me to a plethora of life stories. Mrs. Turner stood out, not just because of her age, but because of the challenges she faced daily due to her schizophrenia. As I provided care to the residents, Mrs. Turner became a source of inspiration, demonstrating that strength could be found even amid mental health struggles.
In the moments we shared in our conversations, Mrs. Turner would often delve into her past, recounting dreams shifted by schizophrenia. She spoke with a mixture of nostalgia, her eyes reflecting the battles she had fought within her mind. It was during one of these conversations that she turned the tables, shifting the focus from her struggles to my dreams.
As a young adult preparing to embark on the daunting journey to college, I grappled with self-doubt and uncertainty about my chosen path—pharmacy. The rigors of academia and the challenges of a highly competitive field scared me, casting shadows over my confidence. Mrs. Turner, however, saw through my insecurities, recognizing the potential within me.
One afternoon, sunlight streamed through the window and cast a warm glow in the room as Mrs.Turner took my hand, with a reassuring smile she said, "Sweetheart," her voice carrying the weight of a lifetime's experiences, "life is a journey, and each step you take is a victory. Don't let fear paralyze you. Embrace your dreams, and you'll find the strength to overcome any obstacle."
Her words resonated deeply, transcending the realm of casual advice. In that moment, Mrs. Turner became more than a resident at the nursing home; she became a beacon of encouragement, a wise elder offering guidance as I navigated the uncharted waters of higher education.
As I prepare for the daunting transition to college, Mrs. Turner's encouragement echoes in my mind, becoming a source of strength during challenging times. The first day on campus, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and bustling activity, I drew on the courage she had instilled in me. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I embarked on my sophomore year of online schooling and found myself grappling with a sense of suffocation. The virus had not only disrupted the normal course of life but had also stolen a precious year of experiences from me. Determined to combat this and fill my days of solitude with purpose, I seized the opportunity to participate in an online pharmacy camp.
Three weeks after signing up, a box arrived at my doorstep, containing college merchandise, gummies, a deconstructed naloxone pen, a Deterra bag, a lozenge mold, and some over-the-counter medications. Little did I know that these items would become tools of empowerment, unlocking a journey of personal growth, resilience, and determination.
The camp unfolded over four weeks, with weekly Zoom meetings where participants from across the country gathered to explore and learn about pharmacy. As the virtual sessions progressed, I not only acquired practical skills but also forged connections with passionate individuals who shared my enthusiasm.
One session, in particular, left an undeniable mark on me—the naloxone pen training. I initially anticipated gaining another practical skill, but what unfolded was an eye-opening discussion on the magnitude of the opioid epidemic. The pharmacist leading the session delved into the steps of using a naloxone pen, emphasizing its critical role in combating opioid overdoses.
The revelation that struck me the hardest was how vulnerable individuals are to addiction, especially pregnant women and the elderly. Til then, I had perceived addiction as an issue confined to the background of my awareness. This session revealed the impact the opioid epidemic could have on anyone, irrespective of their background.
The hands-on experiences during the camp fueled my passion. From crafting homemade ginger lozenges to replicating a DNA strand with gummies, each activity enriched my understanding of pharmaceutical concepts. However, it was the practicality of disposing of medications through a Deterra bag that emphasized the pharmacist's responsibility to the community.
Undoubtedly, the most transformative aspect of the camp was my newfound awareness and understanding of the opioid epidemic. With this knowledge, I realized the weight of the situation and the need for individuals with a genuine concern for public health. This revelation not only spurred my interest in pharmacy but also ignited a sense of responsibility to meaningfully address this crisis.
I'm so grateful for the invaluable opportunity the camp provided. Learning how to reconstruct and use a naloxone pen was not just an achieved skill; it was a catalyst for a shift in my perspective. Since that meeting, I have carried a naloxone pen with me, because I now understand the importance of being able to assist anyone in need.
Reflecting upon this experience, I recognize the impact it has had on my personal growth, resilience, and determination. The adversity of a disrupted sophomore year led me to a virtual pharmacy camp, where I confronted the harsh realities of the opioid epidemic. This encounter became a catalyst for personal and intellectual growth, fostering a resilient mindset and a determination to succeed in my pursuit of a career in pharmacy.
As I look to the future, I carry with me the lessons from that camp—the importance of empathy, the significance of community engagement, and the responsibility that comes with knowledge. The challenges of the pandemic may have taken away a year of conventional experiences, but in its place, it gifted me a profound understanding of the power of pharmacy to positively impact lives. My journey, catalyzed by adversity, has solidified my commitment to the field and equipped me with the resilience and determination needed to navigate the challenges ahead.

At the heart of these choices lies the power to live sustainably, a commitment to harmonizing our existence with the environment. In my daily life, the choices I make to live sustainably include mindful consumption, sustainable transportation, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and water conservation.
At the core of sustainable living is the concept of mindful consumption. Every purchase I make holds the potential to either contribute to environmental degradation or support sustainable practices. Opting for products with minimal packaging, choosing locally sourced goods, and supporting eco-friendly brands are intentional choices that reduce the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing, transportation, and disposal.
Homes are epicenters of energy consumption, and intentional choices can significantly reduce our carbon footprint. Investing in energy-efficient appliances, utilizing programmable thermostats, and choosing LED lighting are practical steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle. This is why I changed the bulbs in my dorm to LED and make sure to turn off the lights when I leave. Also by not using the elevator when I don't have too.
The daily commute is a significant contributor to carbon emissions. Opting for public transportation, carpooling, biking, or walking are intentional choices that reduce the environmental impact of personal travel. Embracing electric or hybrid vehicles further diminishes our reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier planet. On campus, I chose not to bring my car and opt for the electric scooters.
A throwaway culture perpetuates environmental degradation, but intentional choices in waste reduction can reverse this trend. Embracing practices like recycling, composting organic waste, and reducing single-use plastics minimize the burden on landfills. Mindful disposal ensures that materials are repurposed, by reusing plastic bags as trash bags and investing in a water bottle I practice against a throw-away culture.
Water scarcity is a pressing global issue, and intentional choices in water conservation are vital. Installing water-efficient appliances, fixing leaks promptly, and adopting water-saving practices at home contribute to responsible water usage. By taking shorter showers and turning off the faucet when brushing, I integrate water conservation into my life.
The urgency to reduce our carbon footprint stems from the recognition that human activities have accelerated climate change, leading to severe environmental consequences. This warming trend contributes to more frequent and intense weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to ecosystems. Reducing our carbon footprint is a tangible way to mitigate climate change. By decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels, adopting sustainable practices, and embracing eco-friendly technologies, we collectively contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The consequences of unchecked climate change pose risks to biodiversity, food security, water availability, and the overall stability of our planet. Moreover, reducing our carbon footprint is an ethical imperative. It acknowledges our responsibility as stewards of the Earth, recognizing that our actions impact not only our generation but those that will follow. Sustainable living is a commitment to creating a legacy of environmental stewardship, ensuring that future generations inherit a planet capable of sustaining life in all its
diversity.
Intentional choices to live sustainably in daily life are a manifestation of our commitment to environmental stewardship. These choices, ranging from mindful consumption to advocating for green spaces, collectively contribute to a greener, more sustainable future. Recognizing the importance of reducing our carbon footprint is not just a matter of ecological responsibility; it is a declaration of our shared commitment to a healthier, more harmonious coexistence with the planet we call home.

In President Franklin Roosevelt's era, the Greatest Generation faced the crucible of the Great Depression and World War II, emerging as a symbol of resilience and duty. Today, Millennials and Gen Z find themselves at a parallel rendezvous with destiny, inheriting a world marked by economic challenges, environmental crises, and a need for transformative change. This essay explores the cyclical nature of history, drawing parallels between the challenges faced by the Greatest Generation and those confronting the Millennials and Gen Z. It contends that, equipped with specific technologies and operating in a more globalized economy, the younger generations are poised to become "The Greatest Generation 2.0."
The 1930s witnessed economic hardships with low incomes and high unemployment rates, reminiscent of the financial struggles faced by Millennials and Gen Z today. However, the tools at their disposal differ significantly. The Millennials and Gen Z navigate a digital landscape, leveraging technology to create innovative solutions to economic woes. The gig economy, freelancing platforms, and decentralized finance are examples of how technology facilitates adaptive responses to financial challenges. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies provide decentralized financial systems that empower individuals, potentially reshaping economic structures.
The intergenerational divide in communication preferences parallels the shift from letters to telephones in the past and the current preference for instant messaging and social media. While older generations may grapple with the preference of Millennials and Gen Z for digital communication, it mirrors historical shifts in communication methods. Social media becomes a powerful tool for activism, connecting like-minded individuals globally and fostering collective movements for change. The digital sphere becomes a platform for awareness, mobilization, and discourse, transcending geographical boundaries.
The call of duty faced by Millennials and Gen Z extends beyond economic challenges to encompass environmental crises. Global warming is the contemporary battlefield, demanding innovative solutions. When I'm laid down to rest where would I like to be? How would I like to be treated when there is no one to speak for me? These were the thoughts that traveled through my mind as I was volunteering at my local cemetery. As I cleaned each headstone I read the names repeatedly, wondering what their lives were like and what type of impact they made on their community. It was astonishing to learn the history of the members of in community who helped build and run an orphanage and school while they were alive, I felt honored to celebrate and carry on their legacy by learning about them and paying homage to their lives. I also tended to the cemetery gardens and mulched the native trees. During my time at the cemetery, the local gardener educated us on the importance of protecting tree roots by mulching and how we must protect native tree species for the well-being of our environment and the cemetery. We were educated on the importance of planting the trees in the right spot so that the headstones remain in-tact. This experience made me fall in love with the cycle of life and increased my gratitude for the people in the community who make opportunities like this possible for students to come to learn and pass on knowledge. At the top of the mountain, my flag would state "Never take any moment for granted, you don't know how much it could teach you."

The people you are surrounded by shaping your behavior and the way you inherently perceive the world. Before I was born, my Indian parents packed their bags and traveled to an unknown America, halfway across the world, leaving their family behind and leaving me without my extended family. Growing up, I wasn't able to go to Grandma's house on Christmas day or have a big Thanksgiving dinner with aunts, uncles, and cousins. However, my parents created a new and diverse family to provide support; one made up of Islamic, Somali, Kurdistani, and Uzbeki people.
I was extremely fortunate to constantly be surrounded by diversity in my own life. At a young age, I was exposed to significant knowledge of the Kurdish genocide from family members who had first-hand experiences and could make connections between my Syro-Malabar Catholic faith and Islam. My Kurdish aunts and uncles would narrate stories of their lives as refugees and emphasize their faith in Islam within those moments. My Somali cousins bonded with me over religious figures such as Noah and Moses. I ate dinner with my Uzbeki Grandma after she prayed the evening Maghrib. This allowed me to create impactful relationships with those of differing backgrounds and ethnicities than myself, giving me a wider breadth of knowledge about the world and the people in it. In turn, this empowered me to educate others on cultures and religions that are not my own, and also learn how to create a comfortable space in which one can also inquire about others' cultures.
My own identity as a woman of Indian-American origin is a foundation for my belief that there’s strength in pluralism. The concept is that a country can have various regions that possess a distinct language and history, yet still come together under one nationality. Encompassed by a plethora of ideas and social structures, I developed a comfort in those with different thoughts and cultures. I have expressed my love for diversity through my indulgence in international entertainment, my study of multiple foreign languages, and especially through my leadership position in my high school club centered around diversity inclusion. Having conversations about diverse topics has inspired me and allowed me to bring my perspectives and knowledge to my peers in ways that we’ve all been able to learn from one another.
Unveiling the unintended ignorance of even the most educated in my school community is a key moment in which I bring together all my life experiences and passion. Doing so has conveyed to me that I find both pleasure and purpose in educating and uniting people of different cultures to celebrate our differences and recognize our similarities. I intend to continue interweaving my past into my future in college by being open and welcoming while also participating in intellectual dialect. I will be able to bring both my classmates and myself closer together with a richer appreciation of each individual.

I have always viewed my community as one big family. This is mostly because of my mother. She took time out of her day to make the lives of the forgotten and needy better. She is a Nurse Practitioner and she loves to create strong relationships with her patients. Even after those patients get sent to hospice she visits them regularly to talk to them and buys them gifts. This is my greatest inspiration to get involved in my community.
Following in her footsteps I started volunteering at multiple locations. My first regular volunteering experience was feeding the homeless and my local soup kitchen. I would spend about three hours a week helping wither prep, serving, or cleaning. The service that had the greatest impact on me was serving. When I began serving I could see the sick elderly come in as well as little children. The fact that our kitchen was the only source of food these people had hurt my heart and made me appreciate my situation in life a lot more.
Then I began volunteering at my church as a Sunday school teacher. I helped conduct the class and some days I even led them. Being a teacher helped me become a better listener and student. I grew to be more grateful for the effort my teachers put into their classes and it opened my eyes to the impact that teachers have on their students. I enjoyed my time volunteering at the school because of the relationships I made with the students. I felt like I was a mentor to them religiously and I took it very seriously. I worked hard to make their classes entertaining by including time outside and hands-on activities during the class.
Once I began college I volunteered at the local cemetery and helped clean the graves and tend to the plant life. Doing this helped preserve the biodiversity and health of the trees in the area and also to keep respecting the ones who have gone before us. The organizers of this group educated us on the history of the cemetery and taught us about the lives of the people buried in it. This showed me that no matter how seemingly important or unimportant you are, in the end, you'll be laid down to rest with those in the community. It taught me that we are all equal and that respect is a great virtue that will get you far in life.
In all, these experiences helped me shape my perspective in life and showed me that the most valuable thing on earth is the relationship you make and the love you share with those in your community. The greatest thing you can do is help uplift and encourage those around you because everyone faces a time in their life when they need support.
Rev. and Mrs. E B Dunbar Scholarship
In my pursuit of higher education, I've faced obstacles such as financial barriers and balancing work and education. My parents have four children so even if they make enough to support us, it isn't enough to cover all of the costs of my college education. So to combat that I am applying for scholarships as well as all of the hard work I put in high school. I took multiple AP classes, a total of ten in my high school career. Did multiple extracurriculars. Retook the ACT seven times to get the right score and worked during the weekends to save up for college. This took a great toll on my mental health and social life as I was not allowing time for me to relax and socialize with the people that were important to me. Even though I kept pushing on becasue I didn't want to be in so much debt. Because of all of the hard work I put in I was awarded some scholarships from my college but not enough to cover all the expenses. Once I got to college I took up a job and started working to cover all of my living expenses and college expenses. I am grateful for all the hard work I did to get to college but I know I can achieve so much more, my only obstacle would be finding the money to pay for it all.
With my education, as a pharmacist, I can provide mentorship to students who were once in my position and help them get their volunteer hours and hands-on experience. I can develop community programs to help educate others about substance abuse and proper handling of medications. I can conduct scientific research to help find solutions to uncurable diseases and advocate for changes in policies and systems that can improve access to quality education and address social inequalities. One of the ways I can do these things is by creating a charity pharmacy that can help offer medications to those whose insurance doesn't cover it and who cannot afford to pay for the medicine. With this charity pharmacy, I can help save the lives of hundreds of people and help create a loving, safe community.

As I stared at my computer screen I wondered what wrong I had committed for my luck to be this bad. I had just received an email from my school informing me that my sophomore year of education would be fully online. I did not know how to react to this since the only thought that got me through the last three months of freshman year online was the thought that I could go back to in-person school next year.
As I am a very hands-on learner and extroverted, social person this was the end of life as I knew it. I would have to adapt like never before and make a home out of my new social and academic environments. In the beginning, it was extremely difficult, I felt I was out of place (and I was) as well as behind. To combat and overcome this I purchased a planner and began writing down all of my assignment due dates and making to-do lists for every day of the week. I made sure to include study sessions and friendly phone calls in between assignments. This was extremely helpful to me as I realized I was dependent on my teacher's consistent reminders for tests and assignments.
Since I had a lot of extra time on my hands I took up the art of baking and used it as a medium to bond with my younger siblings and not argue with them. Our little baking sessions also became the highlight of my weeks for a while. We even baked our mom a pretty impressive birthday cake. During my time in COVID-19 confinement, my father had gently reminded me that I had a bicycle rotting in our garage storage; and I took it upon myself to un-cover the forgotten love I had for bike riding. I called up my neighbor and we started going on bike rides around our local pond every couple of weeks.
When it came time to return to in-person learning, I had gained a bag full of skills that I most likely wouldn't have had the opportunity to explore had it not been for nontraditional learning. I went back to school knowing how to better manage my time and with a stronger connection to my family and nature. Using the resources available around me helped me persevere through those unprecedented times. It taught me to appreciate the little things in life and make the most out of whatever situation I may be placed into.

Whenever we succeed in any part of life we often incorrectly attribute our success to ourselves, which is not entirely wrong; but it is not right either. We are a culmination of our experiences and choices, made by those around us who knowingly or unknowingly influence us. Those who build us up and lead us forward can not be forgotten once we have achieved our goals. No one wins alone. Being a person that others can count on is the greatest title you could ever receive, it becomes a reason why people respect you and value your presence.
When I was in high school, I spent about 8 hours a week tutoring my classmates for free. I ever thought of it as a chore, but it was more of a realization that I had when it came to academics. The reason why I am successful in school is because of all the extra hours people put in for me to get to school and receive the education I deserve. This being said, we must give back to our communities who were there for us when we needed them. As the saying goes, what goes around comes around, so it is in our best interest to be helpful as much as we can. To be the source of the sigh of relief, or to be a comforting sight to those in need. I believe that it is more rewarding to give instead of receive. This is because you can see the importance of your presence to those around you and it gives you a greater sense of belonging as well as develops your self-confidence.
In conclusion, helping others is important because it allows us to make a positive impact on people's lives. When we lend a helping hand, we can bring joy, comfort, and support to those in need. It creates a sense of community and fosters empathy and compassion. By helping others, we also cultivate personal growth and fulfillment. It gives us a sense of purpose and satisfaction, knowing that we are making a difference in someone's life. Additionally, helping others can inspire a ripple effect, encouraging others to pay it forward and creating a cycle of kindness. It strengthens relationships, builds trust, and fosters a sense of unity among individuals and communities. Ultimately, helping others is not only beneficial for those receiving assistance, but it also enriches our own lives and contributes to a more compassionate and caring world.

If I could have everyone in the world read just one book it would be Dorian Gray. This is because it pushes boundaries and challenges conventional ideas about beauty, morality, and the pursuit of pleasure. It encourages readers to question the values and expectations imposed by society.
It explores the duality of human nature: The novel delves into the idea that humans possess both light and dark sides. It raises questions about the consequences of suppressing our true selves and the impact it can have on our lives.
It prompts self-reflection: "Dorian Gray" forces readers to confront their desires, choices, and the consequences that come with them. It invites us to reflect on the nature of our actions and the impact they have on our lives and the lives of others. It showcases Wilde's wit and writing style:
Wilde's clever wordplay and wit make "Dorian Gray" a joy to read. His sharp observations about society and human nature make the novel engaging and entertaining. It also has enduring relevance: Despite being written over a century ago, "Dorian Gray's" themes, like the pursuit of beauty, the nature of art, and the corrupting influence of society continue to resonate with readers.
Ultimately, reading "Dorian Gray" can be a transformative experience, challenging our perspectives and provoking deeper introspection. Reading this book gives you a new perspective on life.
It's a timeless classic that offers valuable insights into the human condition. So, if you're up for a captivating and thought-provoking read, I recommend giving it a go!
