I would choose the book "Someone Like You" By Sarah Dessen. Dessen is such an impressive writer and this book moves me everytime I read it. The book is about a girl named Halley whos best friend falls pregnant at 17. Her friend, Scarlett, loses her boyfriend 2 weeks before she finds out she is pregnant and Halley takes on a huge responsiblity of being her guide along the way even though they are both going in blind. Scarlett loses a lot of support from her mother and the other girls at school. Finding it hard to keep friends and find people to help support her. Halley however never leaves her side and stands up for her when things get rough. The book taught me so much about the values of friendship but more than anything about the effcts of supporting love. So many young girls nowadays fall victim to cyberbullying and fake friendships and I know as a ninth grade girl I was defenitly a part of those victims. Throughout my entire high school career I find myself coming back to this angelic book because of how it mastered both the encourgment of self love and also promoted the idea that one person can't do everything on their own and that it's ok to ask for help. The beauty in Dessens words and storytelling find a way to tell the truth of young girls struggles with navigating high school, finding faithful friends, and the values of always sticking true to your own values.

Hi! My name is Millie Gorby and I am a High School Senior in Harrisonburg VA. I like to swim and am a big family person. I am in the National Honors Society at my school and participate in a mentorship/internship class as well. I am the team captain of my high school swim team with my younger sister and have swum year-round for 10 years.
I also love to work! If I am not doing school I'm at one of my jobs. Whether that is my volunteer position with my local SPCA, helping foster cats and find homes for them, or working at the Chiropractic or Women's Health Clinics I am employed at. Both these jobs have helped me further my will to want to work in the healthcare setting. I have applied to Virginia Western College for Radiation Oncology. I am hoping to become certified in Radiation therapy and then go on to become an Oncologist through Old Dominion University. A Radiation Oncologist is a doctor whose main job is to perform radiation treatment for people with cancer and those with certain noncancerous conditions. They are the doctors who prescribe radiation treatment, sit with the patient and family members through all sessions of this process and walk the patients through everything as well as performing the therapy. Through this career, I am hoping to make a positive difference in every patient's life that I encounter. I have been told I have a big heart of empathy and I long to pass that down to my patients through their cancer treatments and recovery.
My mom was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when I was much younger and luckily had such amazing doctors that she was able to beat it and it hasn't come back since. I know that the biggest thing that my mom appreciated when she was battling cancer was her nurses and doctors and the amazing care they provided. She needed those happy and smiling faces at every appointment and I aim to be one of those faces for upcoming cancer patients as well. My mom has inspired me to want to be a kind caregiver to those in tough situations. She is such a positive influence in my life and motivates me to do better every day. She gives me the light I need to see and makes sure that I never choose to give up. Without the doctors who helped medicate and save my mom, I would not have grown into the positive young woman I am today.
I am beyond thankful for the Otorhinolaryngologists who helped my mom better herself so she could help me better myself. And through my job as a Radiation Oncologist, I hope that I can have that impact on other families of cancer patients. I cannot wait to be able to save lives for other families so they don't have to go home without a mother, father, sister or brother.
Science has always been such a beautiful and amazing subject to me and the idea of being able to apply the science of radiology to my passion of helping cancer patients is such a dream. Every since my high school biology class I have been fascinated by science and the inspiration it gives me to keep pursing my career!

Collaboration & Diversity in Healthcare Scholarship
Having diversity in the medical field is beyond important especially considering the rapidly expanding diverse communities throughout the United States. Diversity and collaboration are not only important to decrease the rate of racism and segregation but also help many consumers feel comfortable in the workplace. When walking into any healthcare provider I personally always look for the women inside the waiting room because as a woman myself, I lean towards the comfort I feel when surrounded by other ladies especially those treating me and providing me with care. I speculate the same can be said for those of different races or ethnicities. I am not a person of color, nor do I follow a religion that requires certain clothing pieces such as a hijab, however as a woman who knows the feeling of discomfort or distrust when dealing with some male doctors I can only imagine the same can be said for women and men of minorities. I think that the more diversity we have in healthcare facilities such as more females, women and men of other races and even other religions, the more likely patients are to seek help when necessary. 'ANDSCAPE' did a research profile on this exact situation and the results that came up are unacceptable. "Across the country, only 6 of 10 Black adults said they trust doctors to do what is right..." This is completely intolerable all things considered. Every person deserves to feel safe when receiving any care from a health provider.
Collaboration is also a much-needed thing in the medical field. As a healthcare worker myself I have had more than a handful of experiences where I have needed to ask for help from one of the other therapists in my facility. Even the Chiropractor I worked under has had to reach out to me for help before. I remember a specific instance where the other woman I worked with was massaging one of our patients and she called me back which is pretty unusual because we pretty much do our own work on patients but I went back to see what was going on. Lindsay then explained that this patient was feeling a lot of pain in her side under her shoulder blade but she wasn't sure what position to massage in to relieve some of the pain. I was able to provide Lindsay with some new ideas for massage as well as suggested laser therapy for this specific patient which she did end up accepting to help her as well. I trust that Lindsay would have been able to figure things out on her own however because she had me there as another set of eyes we were able to help out faster and relieve some pain for our patient as well.
