Hello there, my name is Amber Victoria Mejia. Thank you for visiting my scholarship profile today! My career goal is to work as a clinical mental health therapist for adolescents and young adults. This has been my goal and dream career since I was a child.
I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York and I am proudly Puerto Rican and Dominican. Growing up in the Bronx - I was exposed to social injustices, racial discrimination, and a lack of mental health facilitation in our communities. My compassion, education, and personal experiences have led me to my current academic and career focus.
I am attending Columbia University for my Master of Science in Social Work. As a dedicated graduate student, I have gained a profound awareness of the value of effective communication, compassion, and empathy when assisting individuals with mental illness. I have a strong foundation in psychological theories and evidence-based procedures. Furthermore, my strong interpersonal and organizational abilities allow me to engage with interdisciplinary teams in a multidisciplinary manner, delivering the best possible care and better client results.
I am devoted to lifelong learning and professional development, and I am excited to contribute my expertise and passion to the mental health field.
I'm currently working in a homeless shelter for men who have a history of severe mental illnesses, substance use disorders and/or criminal backgrounds. This work has been been fulfilling for my dedicated passion to help those in need.

My compassionate and empathetic personality has led me to my current academic and career focus in the mental health field, although many discourage following a dream with little financial fulfillment. In this chaotic world, it is rare to find a true passion; in my case, my passion is to assist others with navigating the chaos. Serving as an advocate for mental health both in and outside of the workplace has driven my desire to pursue my master's degree in social work and obtain my license as a clinical social worker. I hope to become a licensed adolescent therapist in a clinical and private practice setting.
I currently work in the social services field, starting as a case manager here at Ana’s Place Men’s Shelter which houses 108 MICA-orientated clients. I have counseled clients through individualized sessions on complex issues such as wellness self-management, maintaining sobriety, complying with medication, pursuing employment, and independent living skills. I have learned to identify specific needs and submit referrals for community-based treatment as well as support services. Every client has been referred to our on-site medical clinic for psychiatric housing evaluation and collaborated with off-site providers to ensure they have an aftercare plan and follow-up appointments. Being a case manager has been fulfilling my goal as a mental health advocate along with gaining the necessary experience I need to pursue my passion. I have continuously demonstrated my ability to work with leaders across all departments, along with this, I consistently engaged clients to intervene in the crisis and situational issues alongside my supervisors. A monumental moment for me was when our clinical director of social services and program director asked me to join the management team as an administrative coordinator who assists in overseeing the shelter's procedures and workflow alongside the program director. Having been promoted to management, I currently assist with client data submission, referral and chart audits, and program supply orders. As a member of leadership, I also oversee the on-site driver to ensure that clients have access to appointments and housing interviews as needed.
Working aside my program director and assistant director of the shelter has been an incredible privilege allowing me to learn and expand in the field from social services case management, residential operations, and administrative perspectives. I have considered completing a dual-degree program for master’s in social work and a master’s in public administration because of my interest in this current role as an administrative coordinator. I hope to pursue a second degree after completing licensure with my master’s in social work degree. My primary goal is to become a licensed adolescent therapist and I hope that this scholarship furthers my career goal.

You are invited to join us at our housewarming party! Located near the Swiss lakes of Switzerland, surrounded by beautiful farmland, a nearby creek, and an enchanted forest in our backyard, make your way to our grand gated entryway to buzz in. Following the path of cobblestone up to the house where our front yard is covered with evergreen hedges with gorgeous lilies and tulips in the garden. Our front yard garden entrance leads to a roundabout driveway with a running medium-sized, pearl-white water fountain in the middle, covered in red vines and edible grapes. Once arriving, guests are suggested to park their vehicles in our 4-car garage but are welcome to park on the open grass for extra space. When you arrive, you will be graciously greeted by a few of our domesticated foxes, rabbits, and dogs that love to graze the 5 acres of property and yes, each pet has a unique name!
Our new home is a 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom mini mansion with elegant features inside and gothic architecture detailed along the exterior. Entering through the double front doors into a stunning high-ceiling, foyer with a diamond chandelier, a powder room, coat hooks, and shoe storage. Heated, grey marble floors cover the entire house from entry to exit making barefoot walking even more enjoyable. To the left of the foyer, you can find our kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and a large double-door fridge with personal freezer space. The kitchen is an open layout to the massive dining room which is considered a second living space.
On the left side of the foyer is my office in which I run my private practice as a Mental health therapist. The office is welcoming, calming, and comfortable without being intimidating with a couch, pillows, and a snack cabinet for clients. It is easily accessible at the entrance of the house without having to view the personal aspects of my living areas. Straight ahead out of the foyer is our first living room with a large flat screen tv, a curved black couch, and a grand navy-blue piano. On the left side of our living room, you will see a large deep burgundy staircase that leads to our bedrooms.
Each bedroom has its comfort and uniqueness to it. The master bedroom is a double-floor open loft, with a couch, desk space, television, private bathroom, private balcony, and of course, a mini staircase that leads to the bed on the elevated platform. The second floor is the sleeping ground for the most part, but we love to have guests come over and have options to choose which room they feel best in.
Lastly, we make our way back downstairs to the living room where we head back to the dining area and second living space. To the right side of the second living area is a basement door, where we do have an extra apartment-like space that has a bathroom, mini fridge, kitchenette, and a ton of video games! Towards the backside of the second living room, is an open window layout (from ceiling to floor) sunroom that leads into our backyard. The backyard has a large indoor swimming pool that is heated all year round and a grilling patio. Although I hope to continue adding to my dream home, I am extremely grateful and satisfied with where my passion to become a licensed therapist has led me.
