My name is Amaya White. I was born in New Haven, Connecticut however, I have lived up and down the east coast of the United States. I am a sophomore in college who is aspiring to be a pediatrician with a public health focus. In addition to this I am a student health ambassador for Meharry Medical College through their HBCU Wellness program. This allows me to give back and serve my community in a multitude of ways. I love helping others and making an impact wherever I can.
Determination is something that drives me. Once I have my mindset on a goal, I will complete it. I try to look at life in many different aspects to allow others' thoughts and emotions to be heard and understand. I try to live to a "Lilo and Stitch" motto. I would never want anyone to be left out or forgotten, so I incorporate others in the various activities that I am a part of. Which is one of the main reasons I want to be a Pediatrician.
My goal in life is to become a Pediatrician and open my own practice. I want to be able to give children a voice, as theirs tend to get lost in translation. Furthermore, I want to help close the gap in medicine and misinformation about people of color. I would be a perfect candidate for your scholarship because I would use this opportunity to better and further my education, which will allow me to help more people in the long run. By furthering my education, I would be able to make genuine changes within the medical community and society.

Dynamic Edge Women in STEM Scholarship
The world has been booming in technology and tech products since the late 90s. These advances have brought forth numerous innovations across various sectors, including healthcare. Today, I want to delve into my favorite technological advance, a revolutionary innovation reshaping the healthcare world: C.R.I.S.P.R. (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) Gene Editing technology. This groundbreaking tool, created by Dr. Jennifer Doudna and Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier, utilizes the enzyme Cas9 and RNA guides (gRNA) to target and edit specific DNA sequences precisely, offering unparalleled precision and versatility in genetic manipulation.
There are various reasons why CRISPR is an innovative technological advance. However, it is impressive for three main reasons: its precision, versatility, and potential for therapeutic applications. Due to its nature, CRISPR can significantly impact society as it provides the ability to treat genetic disorders by correcting the disease-causing mutations within the DNA sequence. This could have the ability to cure a wide range of genetic diseases, including those that were previously deemed incurable. Moreover, CRISPR has revitalized biomedical research by enabling unprecedented precision in studying gene function and disease mechanisms. This has led to the identification of potential drug targets and the developing of new therapies, further demonstrating its transformative impact on healthcare.
As an aspiring pediatrician, I am particularly excited about CRISPR's potential to revolutionize patient care. It holds promise for improving the lives of countless children and families worldwide by being able to cure genetic diseases. S.T.E.M. innovations such as CRISPR are shaping the future and transforming lives, and I am eager to contribute to this transformative journey as a healthcare professional. Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for helping people, which has evolved into an interest in the medical field. My goal is to become a Pediatrician and open a practice. I want to give children a voice, as theirs tend to need help in translation. Furthermore, I want to help close the gap in medicine and misinformation about people of color.
Technology is a vital tool in pediatric medicine and healthcare as a whole. The most obvious uses of technology are medical imaging, like an MRI or C.T. scan. However, technology is also beneficial in other ways, such as electronic health records and telehealth/remote monitoring. I plan to implement these various technological advances whenever possible when I become a pediatrician. I plan to be the best doctor I can be. My ambition will help me achieve my goal and allow me to help children in the future. As a science major, I plan to learn about the world scientifically and technologically.
All things considered, CRISPR is a novel technology with profound effects on society, research, and medicine. It is among the most essential biotechnology breakthroughs in recent years, having the potential to transform many industries and enhance the lives of millions of people worldwide. Its accuracy, adaptability, and ability to heal previously incurable diseases make it an incredible achievement. CRISPR holds immense potential for pediatric healthcare by offering precise and targeted solutions for genetic disorders and childhood diseases. This gene-editing technology enables scientists to modify disease-causing mutations within a child's DNA, paving the way for novel therapies and personalized treatments. By addressing the root causes of genetic conditions, CRISPR can transform the lives of children affected by rare and debilitating diseases, offering hope for improved health outcomes and quality of life. Additionally, CRISPR's applications in biomedical research facilitate the study of pediatric diseases and the development of new treatments, ultimately advancing the field of pediatric medicine and offering promising avenues for pediatric healthcare innovation.
A Man Helping Women Helping Women Scholarship
My name is Amaya White and I am a freshman at Middle Tennessee State University who genuinely loves providing for others. Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for helping people, which has evolved into an interest in the medical field. Throughout the years, I have been exposed to various community organizations where I worked as a volunteer. Additionally, as a clinical intern, I was selected to participate in a summer academic enrichment program, which exposed me to numerous medical fields at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. These opportunities allowed me to think critically and further enhance my ability to develop a plan of action to transform someone's life quickly, which motivates me to this day. Helping disenfranchised communities in Nashville is something I plan to do when I become a doctor. The opportunity of becoming a doctor in an accelerated program through Meharry Medical College, the most prestigious historically black medical school, would be a dream come true. To worship God through service to mankind is something I have shown and will continue to show daily in my life.
While I am unsure of my specialization, I am confident in my commitment to serving families who have been underserved their entire lives. I believe that everyone deserves access to good quality healthcare. Seeking medical care, visiting the doctor, and taking care of yourself should not be a luxury for a few, but all people should have access. Some people in rural and underserved areas cannot seek medical attention because the nearest facility is hours away. No one should have to live without ample access to health services. The most significant point of preventative care in healthcare is to be able to start early. These limitations put rural communities at a disadvantage compared to urban communities. These restrictions negatively affect the social determinants of health in rural communities. In turn, these disparities have allowed a public health crisis to go virtually unnoticed in these areas. By becoming a physician and serving the people of these communities, I hope to eliminate this public health crisis. Additionally, I want to ensure that this form of discrimination in healthcare is eradicated for future generations.
The values and integrity of Meharry Medical College and Middle Tennessee State University combined have led me to apply for this prestigious scholarship. My early interest in medicine guided my decision to enroll in the healthcare pathway at my high school. This pathway focused on specialized courses, hands-on experience, CNA certification, and a semester-long internship. This pathway includes dual enrollment courses at Chattahoochee Technical College with a particular emphasis on biology courses. By getting early exposure to these concepts in high school, I will not only have a head start on my collegiate coursework but also complete 30 credit hours of college debt-free. It would be a blessing and an honor to be considered for this scholarship.

Beyond The C.L.O.U.D Scholarship
I have always been curious about the world around me and how it worked. When I was very young, I knew that I wanted to become a pediatrician. I loved going to the doctor's office, and the idea of being able to help others was always so interesting to me. As I got older, I was exposed to the wonderful world of science. I used to spend hours watching different documentaries about the evolution of the world and the part science had to do with it. From the microscopic level to the macroscopic level; everything is important and connects with everything else. Additionally, I have loved to be able to answer questions. Like, why does this happen in the first place? Is there any way to change it?, etc.
The process of brainstorming, problem-solving, and answering the questions of life were fun on their own, however, being able to add science into the mix empowered me to seek my bachelor's degree in biology. A bachelor's degree in biology will allow me to be properly prepared for medical school as a biology degree offers a comprehensive understanding of life sciences, encompassing the intricacies of living organisms, ecosystems, genetics, physiology, and much more. I also love that a biology degree involves critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. I also cannot enjoy when I am about to engage in rigorous scientific inquiry, conduct experiments, and analyze data as I am a hands-on learner.
Along with being a biology major, I am also minoring in the sciences. While planning my classes, I realized that I will be taking many science classes in the future from biology to chemistry to physics. I decided that having a science minor would allow me to have more access and flexibility to take all the science classes I need. The wonderful world of science is quite vast. Spanning from the microscopic level of chemicals to the organisms that are made from those chemicals to the physical abilities of the organisms. The world, like science, is intertwined.
My aspiration of becoming a doctor is something that drives me forward every day. When I was younger, one of my favorite things was to go to my pediatrician's office. Once I entered high school, I began to take honors, AP, and dual enrollment classes. In addition to the courses I was taking, my school was career-based. I was involved in the healthcare and graphic design pathway. Throughout these pathways, I learned more about the world of healthcare and the creative power of graphic design. During my junior year, I had the incredible opportunity to become a clinic intern for Meharry Medical College for a summer internship. This experience solidifies my dream of becoming a physician.
After graduating from high school and entering my freshman year of college, I immediately knew what I wanted to do. First, I declared my major as a biology physiology major. Then I signed up for biology and chemistry classes, which were spectacular. Next, I joined some clubs that were healthcare and research-based. Becoming a pediatrician is what I have set my mind to because I want to help others; I want to be the change that I want to see. Furthermore, I wanted to understand the different health disparities that affected my community. My overall goal in life is to become a pediatrician with my private practice. I have dreamed of becoming a physician since I was quite young, visiting the doctors and specialists.
