Future Women In STEM Scholarship
Growing up, I faced many challenges, but I always had a curiosity about the world around me. My upbringing wasn’t easy, as I dealt with difficult circumstances at home, but those struggles fueled my desire to learn and find ways to help others. I always found comfort in science and technology, and over time, I discovered that my true passion was in healthcare. My dream is to become a nurse, a role where I can make a direct impact on people’s lives and use science to help those in need.
One experience that shaped my interest in healthcare and STEM happened when I was younger, living with my grandma in Mississippi. She was often ill, and I found myself constantly trying to understand her medical issues. I would read her prescription bottles, ask questions about her conditions, and look up symptoms online to help her feel better. At one point, her condition worsened, and I had to call emergency services when she collapsed. That experience was life-changing for me. Seeing firsthand how quickly medical professionals responded and how they worked together to save her life sparked a deep interest in nursing. I wanted to be that person who could help someone in need during their most vulnerable moments.
Growing up, I didn’t have the luxury of being surrounded by a lot of resources. There were no medical programs or specialized guidance in my area, but I didn’t let that stop me. I turned to online resources, watched videos, and read books to understand more about biology, healthcare, and technology. I began to see how interconnected these fields were—how nursing, technology, and science all came together to improve patient care. It was inspiring to learn about how nurses use technology in patient monitoring and how scientific research is constantly advancing to make healthcare more effective.
As I continued my studies in high school, I became even more fascinated with biology. I excelled in subjects like anatomy and physiology and was especially drawn to learning about how the human body works. I realized that nursing was a perfect fit for me because it combined my love of science with my desire to help others. I knew that becoming a nurse would allow me to use both my compassion and my knowledge to make a real difference in people’s lives.
However, my path hasn’t been easy. I have faced many obstacles, including financial struggles and a lack of support. I don’t have the money for college, and there’s no one in my family who has attended a university. But I refuse to let that stop me. I believe in myself, and I know that God has a plan for me. I’ve been through so much, but I’ve always kept a positive mindset, knowing that with hard work and determination, I can overcome anything.
My goal is to attend college and major in nursing. I’m particularly interested in pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner, where I can provide primary care and advocate for underserved communities. I want to use my experiences to connect with people on a deeper level, understanding what they’ve been through and offering the care they need. Despite the struggles I’ve faced, I’m motivated to achieve my goals and become a nurse who can change lives. I believe that my background has made me stronger, and I’m excited to continue learning and growing in the healthcare field. My journey is just beginning, but I know that through hard work, faith, and a passion for helping others, I can make my dreams a reality.

I’ve been through a lot in my life, but I refuse to let it define me. My mom grew up in foster care and never had the chance to go to college. She struggled with a lot of pain from her past, and unfortunately, she took that pain out on me. She abused me—cutting me, beating me, and making me feel like I was nothing. The things she did to me left both physical and emotional scars, but I didn’t let them break me.
Eventually, I was sent to Mississippi to live with my grandma by CPS. Being there gave me a chance to heal, but it also forced me to grow up fast. I had to learn to be independent and take care of myself. Even though I found some stability, I still face challenges. I don’t have any money to pay for college, and I don’t have financial support from my family. But I won’t let that stop me. I know that God has a plan for my life, and I trust that He will guide me through every obstacle.
Going to college is important to me because it’s my chance to change my future. I don’t want my past to define me—I want my strength and determination to. I want to prove to myself and to others that no matter where you come from, you can still succeed. I refuse to be another statistic. I will work hard, stay focused, and push through every challenge that comes my way. My struggles have only made me stronger, and I know that with faith and determination, I will create the life I deserve.

I want to be a nurse because I know what it’s like to feel powerless, to be in pain, and to have no one to turn to. My mother grew up in foster care with nothing, and while she worked hard to become a nurse, she never truly healed from her past. Instead, she took her pain out on me. From a young age, I endured physical, emotional, and mental abuse at her hands. She would scream at me over the smallest things, calling me names that made me feel worthless. There were days she wouldn’t feed me, forcing me to go to bed hungry. Other times, she hit me so hard that I had to cover my bruises. Instead of coming home to a place of love and support, I lived in constant fear, never knowing what would set her off next.
For years, I felt like I didn’t matter. I struggled with feelings of loneliness and hopelessness, wondering if things would ever get better. But as I got older, I realized that my pain didn’t have to define me—I could use it to help others. I know firsthand how much a single act of kindness can mean to someone who is suffering. Whether it was a teacher who noticed I was struggling, a friend who listened, or a stranger who showed me kindness, those moments stuck with me. They made me realize that I wanted to be that person for others.
That’s why I want to become a nurse. I want to help people when they are at their most vulnerable, to be the person who listens, who cares, and who provides comfort. I plan to specialize in [insert specialization, e.g., pediatric nursing, trauma care, mental health nursing] because I know how crucial it is to have someone there during life’s hardest moments. I want to be the nurse who reassures a scared child, comforts a patient in pain, or advocates for those who can’t speak for themselves.
To prepare for this journey, I have taken courses in highschool related to health and I also volunteered at an nursing home. Beyond that, I have worked hard to heal myself and break the cycle of pain. I refuse to let my past hold me back. Instead, I choose to turn it into something meaningful.
For me, nursing is not just a career—it’s a calling. It’s my way of ensuring that no one else feels as alone and helpless as I once did. I know that even the smallest act of care can make a world of difference, and I am ready to dedicate my life to making that difference.
Outside the Binary: Chineye Emeghara’s STEAM Scholarship
As a high school student, I've got big dreams and even bigger aspirations for my future. One thing I know for sure is that I want to pursue a degree that will not only help me grow in my passions but also make a real difference in the world. That's why I'm so excited about the idea of becoming an anesthesiologist.
You see, I've always been drawn to the field of healthcare. There's something about the idea of helping people when they need it most that just resonates with me. And when I learned about the role of an anesthesiologist – someone who gets to be right there, ensuring patients are comfortable and safe during surgery – I knew that was what I wanted to do.
But here's the thing: there aren't many black African American women in this field. And as someone who fits that description, I see it as both a challenge and an opportunity. Sure, it might be tough to break into a field where people like me are underrepresented, but I see it as a chance to pave the way for others who come after me. I want to show that it doesn't matter what you look like or where you come from – if you're passionate and determined, you can achieve anything.
My biggest inspiration in life is definitely my mom. She's the first person in our family to go to college, and she's now working in the health field. Watching her overcome obstacles and pursue her dreams has shown me that anything is possible with hard work and determination. She's always been there for me, cheering me on and encouraging me to reach for the stars. And knowing that I have her support makes me feel like I can take on the world.
While my main focus in college will be on becoming an anesthesiologist, I'm also eager to explore other subjects outside of healthcare. One topic that really interests me is environmental science. I think it's so important to understand the connection between human health and the environment, especially with all the challenges our planet is facing right now. By learning more about this topic, I hope to become a more well-rounded healthcare professional and advocate for solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
In conclusion, I'm passionate about making a difference in healthcare, and I believe that pursuing a degree in this field is the first step towards achieving my goals. With my mom as my inspiration and role model, I know that I can overcome any obstacles that come my way. And who knows? Maybe one day I'll be the one inspiring the next generation of aspiring anesthesiologists. In addition to my academic pursuits, I also plan to engage in extracurricular activities that allow me to give back to my community and further develop my leadership skills. With a strong support system behind me and a drive to make a positive impact, I am confident that I can turn my dreams into reality and become the best version of myself.

Growing up in a single-parent household with my mom has shaped every part of who I am today. You see, my dad isn't around; he's been in and out of jail for as long as I can remember. It's just been my mom, my younger brother, and me against the world. But let me tell you about my mom—she's a real superhero.
My mom's childhood was tough. Her own mom was deep into drugs, so she ended up in foster care. She didn't have it easy, but instead of letting her past define her, she decided to rewrite her story. At just 18, she had me. Can you imagine? I can't even fathom taking care of a baby at that age, but she did it with grace and determination.
She made a vow to herself that she would be successful, not just for her own sake but for mine and my brother's too. She became the first person in our family to go to college. It wasn't easy. She juggled being a full-time student, a mom, and working odd jobs just to make ends meet. But she never complained. She just kept pushing forward, fueled by the dream of giving us a better life.
At 27, she achieved her dream of becoming a nurse. I was so proud of her. But you know what? She didn't stop there. While working long hours at the hospital, she still found the time to pursue her next big goal—becoming a doctor. Can you believe that? Despite all the odds stacked against her, she never stopped striving for more.
I look at my mom, and I feel a mix of emotions—pride, admiration, but also sadness. Sadness because I know how much she's sacrificed for us. She's missed out on so much because she's been too busy making sure we had everything we needed. She's missed school events, birthdays, and even just simple moments of relaxation.
But you know what? She's never once complained. She's never made us feel like a burden. Instead, she's shown us what true strength and love look like. Every opportunity I have today is because of her. Every dream I dare to chase is because she showed me that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
There's this one moment that stands out to me, a moment that made me truly understand the depth of my mom's love and sacrifice. It was when she broke down one night after a particularly long shift at the hospital. She was exhausted, physically and emotionally drained. And yet, through her tears, she looked at me and said, "I do it all for you and your brother. You two are my everything."
In that moment, I realized just how much she's given up for us. How much she's endured, all so that we could have a shot at a better life. It broke my heart and filled me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude all at once.
So, when people ask me who my biggest inspiration is, I don't hesitate to say it's my mom. She's the true definition of a hero—a woman who faced adversity head-on and emerged stronger than ever. And as I continue on my own journey, I carry her strength and resilience with me every step of the way.
Bald Eagle Scholarship
Growing up, my mom was the single most influential person in my life, and her journey from adversity to triumph has left an indelible mark on me. She faced more challenges and obstacles than seemed fair, yet she tackled them with unwavering determination and resilience. I remember the countless times she was told she wouldn't amount to anything, a painful reminder of the poverty and instability that surrounded her upbringing. Despite it all, she defied the odds and became the first person in our family to graduate, a feat that many believed was beyond her reach.
Her journey was riddled with hardship from the start. Growing up in poverty, she often went without the basic necessities that many take for granted. To make matters worse, she found herself in foster care, a situation that only added to her sense of abandonment and despair. But perhaps the greatest blow came when her own mother, lost to the grip of addiction, gave her away for drugs. It was a betrayal that cut deep, leaving scars that would linger for years to come.
Yet through it all, my mom refused to be defined by her circumstances. Instead, she used her pain as fuel to propel herself forward, determined to carve out a better life for herself and for me. The road ahead was long and arduous, filled with countless obstacles and setbacks. But with unwavering determination and an iron will, she pressed on, refusing to let anything stand in her way.
Her journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome even the most daunting of challenges. Despite the odds stacked against her, she never lost sight of her dreams, never wavered in her commitment to creating a better future for herself and for me.
Today, my mom is a shining example of resilience and determination, a beacon of hope in a world often filled with darkness. She's currently working as a nurse, a job that allows her to make a difference in the lives of others every single day. But she's not done yet – far from it. She's still pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor, a goal that once seemed impossibly out of reach but is now well within her grasp.
Her journey has been a source of both pain and pride for me. It breaks my heart to think of all the hardships she's had to endure, all the obstacles she's had to overcome. But at the same time, I couldn't be prouder of the person she's become, of the strength and resilience she's shown in the face of adversity.
My mom's journey is a reminder that no matter how bleak things may seem, there is always hope. It's a testament to the power of perseverance, of never giving up on your dreams no matter how impossible they may seem. And it's a reminder that with enough determination and resilience, anything is possible.
