Sarah F. Watson and James E. Dashiell Scholarship
Growing up, I’ve always been taught that the greatest form of joy is giving back to your community. Throughout my time at Howard University, I've been afforded several great opportunities, from publishing research papers to studying abroad. Whilst my experiences have grown my passion for health, they've also raised concern for the lack of medical care in my community. Health conditions in the black community are under-researched, unrepresented, and commonly undocumented. The historical oppression of black Americans has led generations of individuals to experience weakened mental, physical, and emotional health. As a premed student, I aim to use my education as a tool to fix these issues.
Over the summer of 2024, I set up my first non-profit organization, Empowerment Through Wellness, or ETW. ETW focuses on educating the black community about the history and significance of nutrition, bringing awareness to low-income black health disparities, and providing neighborhoods in food deserts with fresh produce. My goals for the organization include promoting health equity and continuing to give back to the black community.
Once I've graduated from medical school, I plan on starting my own practice with an emphasis on serving the black community and employing other black doctors. Through my non-profit and future medical career, I’m confident I’ll be able to make a significant impact on my community. If chosen, the Sarah F. Watson and James E. Dashiell Scholarship would motivate and encourage me to continue my work and ambitions.
