My family knew from the moment I was eight years old that I would become a prosthetist and orthotist practitioner. Maybe not with the exact words of "prosthetist", but how else can you describe an eight-year-old with the aspirations of restoring an amputated doll after the dog ripped its leg off?
My childhood was spent pondering the world of sculpture and specifically art that accentuated the body. From an early age, I learned the art of handcrafting from clay from my mother. Her passions became mine as I spent a lot of time with my artist-mom who worked day in and day out to provide for two children as a single parent. After my discovery with clay came metalwork, followed by robotics. The meshing of art and science captivated me, and I craved more.
I pursued this passion by obtaining my Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree where I learned the concoction of healthcare, art, and robotics. It was almost as if I was that giddy little eight-year-old learning to rejuvenate my doll again after a long battle with anxiety and depression. From these experiences, I was able to bring the words about my future to fruition: Prosthetist and Orthotist. I am now at Northwestern University obtaining my Prosthetics and Orthotics degree to become a Board Certified Practitioner.
I want to change the field of prosthetics starting with prosthesis accessibility. The current world of prosthesis development is highly selective for recipients and quite costly. Broadening the application of customized AI-developed prostheses is my passion, inventing the mechanisms to do so is my goal.

“What’s your purpose, then?” my therapist asked me. I was suffering a severe panic-depressive episode, and I truly did not have a purpose, or at least one I thought about. At this time, I was getting a Mechanical Engineering degree, completing research on a fellowship, and working thirty hours a week. “One thing about you, Amanda, is you have the drive to excel and innovate, why do you work so hard if there is no purpose?”. This encounter elicited an immediate change in my life that made me realize my purpose was to innovate. That year I transitioned the focus of my research toward osteoarthritis and community-centered healthcare projects.
Shortly after, I encountered a family whose daughter was born with a congenital defect requiring her to undergo rotationplasty surgery. Their four-year-old’s feet had infrequented ground, yet her desire to traverse terrain inspired me. I lead a team of engineers to design a hands-free crutch for the girl in the interim of her time in a bent leg cast and being able to walk. This experience afforded me great opportunities to learn from healthcare professionals. My purpose was illuminated by the prior year of instability. The field of Prosthetics and Orthotics (O&P) found me.
As I continued my mission for a purpose, I was reminded of my mother’s impact on my childhood. Coming from a single-parent home, she influenced the trajectory of my life. My mother, who is a gifted sculptor and artist, taught me to use my hands to bring my imagination to fruition, starting with the medium of clay. My mother’s designs were oriented around the complexity of the growing human body. I continued my growth in design throughout high school and college with other mediums to bring my abstract thoughts to reality. My background in the arts aided in the transition to using machinery. My mother’s passion for designing abstract art forms revolving around the contortions of the human body transferred to me.
My interest in research grows my passion and devotion to the field of O&P. I became intrigued with artificial intelligence (AI), ultimately leading to my passion for AI prosthesis development. After my experience working with children as a math instructor, mentor, and healthcare member, I pondered how I could develop a prosthesis that grows with a child throughout their life. I plan to work towards this dream of invention during my time at Northwestern University by uncovering the phenomenon of muscle pain due to compensation in individuals with upper limb amputations. From this research, I intend to create a biomechanical model that allows anyone to visualize muscle actions and reactions in individuals with amputations.
My future as a pediatric prosthetist and orthotist is inspired by the child I assisted and making the world a little bit more accessible. I aspire to work with children and increase the availability of prostheses for the youngest members of our community worldwide. A prosthesis that grows with a child will revolutionize the accessibility of prosthetic devices- I intend to be at the forefront of this.
The core of my intentions in this field lies in being welcoming to all. I know from experience, and a whole lot of soul-searching, that people in their most vulnerable moments need someone open to listening. If my therapist was not as open and welcoming as she was, I may not have ever found my way here. I intend to make my career in O&P dedicated to openness, honesty, and service to those who need it most. Maybe, I will also help someone find their purpose in the process, too.

The year is 6022: you awake from a cryogenic chamber in the futuristic United States- or what you believe to be at least (you just woke up, give yourself a break). You chose to cryonically preserve yourself in hopes to defy mortality after the impending nuclear threat in the late 2100s. Upon waking up you return to mortal reality with what appears to be nuclear scientists pleading with you to answer a question and showing you symbols that you can't understand. In this word, your language ceases to exist- well it exists just not the way it used to. How can you help the scientists?
In 1999, the first geologic repository for nuclear waste was opened, and since then, it is estimated that there are 85,000 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel underground and this value is projected to grow at a rate of about 2,000 metric tons per year. The importance of this is that, while radioactive material decays, such a large amount of decayed radioactive materials still emit large quantities of radiation- which can be severely damaging if unleashed from the depths of the geologic repositories. Not only is nuclear fuel being stored in geologic repositories, but low-level nuclear waste is also being transported across different borders and left in various locations including the ocean.
One of the most perplexing discussions I have participated in related to waste nuclear semiotics; which is a form of linguism regarding the study of how we talk to humans through signs and symbols one hundred, one thousand, or even ten thousand years from now about the hazard of nuclear waste storage below the earth. Basically, nuclear semiotics is how humans can display to other humans (maybe non-humans) that there is dangerous, radioactive material, nearby that they should stay away from it. Thus, the study of Semiotics is of uttermost importance to understanding the nature and future of the universe we have created, I plan to analyze current systems in place for maintaining our language, and later suggest additions to ensure the progression of language preservation- further explaining why semiotics is important to the future of society.
Almost all human communication takes place by way of verbal or pictorial communication, hence the importance of future-proofing semiotics. The most fascinating part of language use in humans is how multifaceted words, and even pictures, can be when used in different contexts. It is for this reason that stringent definitions and thoughts be put into the development of futuristic semiotics so that we can avoid a paradox illusion in futuristic symbolism. One challenging question I have stumbled across in this field- excluding the thought of our own downfall- is how we will preserve the world and convey meaning through language in the far future. How do we develop systems to maintain stewardship of communication, including preserving the ability to convey these messages to future generations without minimizing the importance of such information millennia from now?
Multiple studies have proposed that language acquisition is easiest in larger populations, and thus language retention in a second generation is easier in a larger population. Sign systems are evolving to become more efficient to produce and accurately produced, however, are becoming more difficult to comprehend as produced by humans. This current research suggests that the semiotics being used will be produced by the largest populations, however, may be difficult to understand for future generations of smaller populations sizes. Although the learnability and usability of sign systems are of great importance, how do we distribute this meaning to people of smaller populations? More importantly, what if current populations cease to exist?
The most common method to target this dilemma is the "Atomic Priesthood". In summary, the Atomic Priesthood suggests creating a starting cohort of people that generate sign systems who then follow a generational memory model. Every ten years, this cohort chooses a new representative cohort that analyzes and reinvents the sign system for reproducibility and ease of use. While this method seems foolproof at first glance due to constant iterations of the sign system- referring back to the study on sign system evolution- this method may generate concerns with ease of learnability and comprehensibility. Constant revisions may lead to oversimplification and abstraction resulting in difficult understanding. That being said, if a language or sign system must survive, it needs to be learnable. Instead of choosing a representative group from one population, I suggest creating a generalized representative cohort that constitutes the entire- global- population as we know it. A global committee, recognized by the broader world, should be in charge of developing and maintaining a code of symbolism that sustains semiotics through the future of human existence. With a method like this in place, input from smaller populations can be used to generate and maintain semiotics for a future-proof world.
The broader impact of semiotics on wholistic linguism is also compelling to one's comprehension and understanding of life and our society's longevity. How do we as a society preserve history so that history does not repeat itself? I believe that this requires deep reflection on the world's history- ensuring that people understand why some parts of our history should not repeat itself. In order to understand and preserve our society's future, we must analyze occurrences of our past and provide some translation to previous events that are future-proof using semiotics to advance our understanding of the past to merge this with the trajectory of our society for the future. I also believe that to better understand the nature of the universe, we as a society should move towards anticipating the need for future-proof semiotic translation- and that anticipating the need for futuristic translation is a key to preventing a cyclical future.
One would be committing a logical fallacy, in fact, appealing causality when none exists, to assume, with the existing concern for nuclear semiotics, that we do not need to put as much emphasis on future-proofing the symbolism of spreading awareness. Some may make hasty generalizations assuming the use of a pictogram for nuclear waste should be enough. How can the world assume that this pictogram will be enough to prevent the downfall of a futuristic society? It is at the core of human life, to understand the nature of our universe and the future we can provide for us and the universe to exist in symbiotic harmony. I believe that anticipating the future needs for such safety mechanisms is paramount to the development of a society that does not repeat itself, and instead advances to new heights.
The nuclear scientists are awaiting our response, how can we help them?

When it's three in the morning- and I'm bent over my desk doing a demanding biomechanics question- asking myself "what is all of this for?" I pull open YouTube and search for a live video of the Alabama Shakes performing "This Feeling". Although brief in length, this song delivers a beautiful message to any individual listening: feelings, both good and bad, are important to your growth; keep fighting, even if no one is on your side, and the road will become clear.
The path from my early childhood was never clear, and I found myself spending "all this time, trying to figure out why nobody [was] on my side". From a young age, I asked myself why I had to go through things my peers did not. "I just kept hoping" I would escape- what then seemed like- the endless obstacles to finding success. Obstacles such as poverty, parental divorce, moving from home to home, not having electricity or water, mental health crises, and even working a job at the age of thirteen to help provide for my family.
My path was never clear, in fact, I did not think I was ever going to go to college- let alone going to pursue a graduate degree at one of the most prestigious schools for Prosthetics and Orthotics. Watching Brittany Howard perform "This Feeling" live reminds me of the passion necessary to strive toward your most grandiose dreams. Obtaining my master's degree has been an arduous effort, from affording it, to obtaining it- however, I love every second of learning how to become a better practitioner. After facing so much adversity in my childhood, I have finally "been having me a real good time, and it feels so nice to know I'm gonna be alright".

Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
Amanda Kemper's Definition of Legacy: A story, person, or sentiment that strives to uphold or promote the history donated to society by an individual or item; ultimately making society or the surroundings a better place.
There are many legacies this world has given us that is not limited to just people. For example, there is a legacy left by the existence of chemotherapy to treat cancer patients giving these individuals a better life; or the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. who fought for equality to make the world fair for people of color in a past society that people of color were held to unequal standards than white people. I define a legacy this way because it upholds that any legacy should not only contribute to society but also make the world a better place- a more fair place. Legacies strive for greatness- not only for themselves but for those surrounding them. To be regarded as a legacy, one must strive to such a level of greatness as altruistically as possible.
I was raised in a situation many may see as unfair, yet it shaped me to be the legacy I strive to become for other underrepresented people. My family was quite poor, and some days we couldn't afford to even eat the reduced-price lunch at school. We sometimes weren't sure if we would have electricity to stay warm over the night or if we would wake up to our car being repossessed the following morning. Despite all the fear through those times, I stayed rich with knowledge. The school was a safe place where I could go to learn since I knew that was my only way of escaping my upbringing. I knew my path out was by educating myself, and I stayed hungry for education throughout those times of uncertainty.
I plan on breaking the cycle of my upbringing by educating myself and empowering those who are underrepresented surrounding me with knowledge. I fought through my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering while suffering from debilitating anxiety and depression from my past. Upon conquering that degree I found solace in working with disabled individuals in Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O). I am now entering my graduate degree in P&O where I can advocate for those suffering from other diseases or poverty. Obtaining medical devices necessary for living a healthy life can be quite costly in the United States and I plan to advocate for these patients. I plan on leaving a legacy in the field of P&O either through a new, groundbreaking, device reducing the cost of prostheses or as an individual by contributing to the development of AI-based prosthetics. I aspire to create a legacy in the world one invention at a time.

The header of a poster in a local store read: “Our four-year-old daughter was born with a congenital disease and has endured two rotationplasty surgeries, can you help her walk?”
I look upon my hands as instruments to fulfill the requirements of assisting a child, who has barely walked. My hands can produce an assistive crutch accommodating a bent knee cast. My lingering curiosity for research, with hints of my mother’s fascination of human growth, led me to investigate the potential for an artificial intelligence (AI) driven prosthesis development system that can follow a child through their development, potentially allowing prosthetics to become more readily available to those unable to acquire one or those who live in a location without prosthetists to be fitted for one. Not only is global healthcare access a rising issue, but the access to affordable and reliable healthcare is too. I strive to address the issues starting at my community level and reach out to further countries where there is an even larger discrepancy in healthcare accessibility.
My future as a pediatric prosthetist and orthotist is inspired by the child I assisted in learning to walk again and the capabilities of my hands to invent the mechanisms to do so. I aspire to work with children and increase the accessibility of prostheses for the youngest members of our community worldwide. Obtaining my degree in prosthetics and orthotics would grant me the opportunity to change the way in which we distribute prosthetic limbs and work with clients to distribute prostheses fairly to all individuals in need. My next step in my education will be completing my Masters of Prosthetics and Orthotics from Northwestern University. Here I will further pursue research in AI prosthesis production while studying to be a board certified Prosthetist and Orthotist.
Bold Art Scholarship
It may be astounding to believe someone’s favorite piece of art is a one-sided “circle”, but the mystifying design of the Möbius Strip is one of the most captivating inventions of art meshing with science I believe to exist. The design of the Möbius Strip is mathematically pre-destined, leaving a gallivanter of the arts and sciences- like myself- enthralled.
The Möbius Strip is a surface with one side that must exist in three-dimensional, Euclidean-coordinate geometric, space that was invented through the mastery of Calculus. The paradoxically beautiful piece of the Möbius Strip represents the multi-faceted nature of two-dimensional life forms existing in three-dimensional space. What is even more awe-striking is the possibility that the Möbius Strip has infinite sides due to its two-dimensional existence in our everyday three-dimensional world.
The Möbius Strip represents the ability of an individual to become a do-decagon in a world full of decagons. Standing out from the crowd is the true ability of the Möbius Strip which is why its art form is so enticing to me. I invest in my individuality daily and strive to be unique. The Möbius Strip is an art form that embodies my existence and is a piece of art I will always cherish.
