Bio

Hi! I’m Alyssa, an 18-year-old freshman at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC, majoring in Elementary Education and Special Education. From Raleigh, NC, I’m thrilled to be the first in my family to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Raised by a hardworking single mom in healthcare, I’m driven by a desire to give back to my community. I’m passionate about teaching because I want to create a nurturing space where kids feel loved and supported. My personal experiences, including my biological father’s mental health challenges and the loss of my beloved grandmother to cancer, have shaped this goal. My grandmother’s legacy of love and strength inspires me to become a teacher who makes a meaningful impact. In addition to my studies, I’m involved in carpentry and was part of an all-female shed-building team. I love spending time with friends, attending football games, babysitting, going to concerts, and visiting the beach. I balance multiple jobs to support my education and goals. I aim to be “that” teacher—a dependable, caring presence in my students’ lives, offering them a safe haven and encouragement every day.

My journey toward pursuing a career in special education has been profoundly shaped by my experiences as a volunteer and by my personal background as a first-generation college student. These experiences have not only fueled my passion for this field but have also highlighted the obstacles I must overcome and the impact that financial support can make in achieving my goals. Volunteering with special education students throughout high school has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Each interaction with these students has been a powerful reminder of their incredible joy and zest for life. Their enthusiasm and positive energy are truly unmatched, and it has been inspiring to witness their unique perspectives and strengths. I am deeply motivated by the opportunity to foster this same energy and positivity as a special education teacher. I look forward to providing consistent support and encouragement, helping each student to advance and achieve their personal goals. My aim is to be a constant source of stability and to empower my students to reach their full potential, whether that means excelling academically, making new friends, or participating in activities they are passionate about. As a first-generation college student, I am acutely aware of the challenges that come with breaking through the barriers of economic and social limitations. My family’s financial situation means that we do not have the same resources or access to opportunities as others, but I am determined not to let this define my future. The stigma associated with not having the latest material possessions or living in a larger house does not diminish my worth or my potential. I am driven to prove that success is not determined by material wealth but by perseverance, dedication, and the pursuit of one’s goals. This mindset fuels my determination to excel in my academic and professional journey and to use my experiences to inspire and support others facing similar challenges. In the field of special education, I plan to break barriers by advocating for greater inclusion and accessibility in both school and community settings. While progress has been made in acknowledging and supporting individuals with special needs, there is still much work to be done. I am committed to advancing these efforts by ensuring that my students have access to meaningful opportunities, such as employment, social interactions, and extracurricular activities. By promoting inclusion and actively working to eliminate societal barriers, I hope to create a more equitable environment where every student can thrive. This scholarship is crucial in helping me achieve these goals. As I pursue my degree in special education, financial support will enable me to focus on my studies and gain the knowledge and skills necessary to make a significant impact in the field. The scholarship will alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with higher education, allowing me to dedicate more time to my academic and extracurricular commitments. It will also bring me one step closer to becoming a special education teacher, where I can contribute to breaking down barriers and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. In summary, my passion for special education is driven by my experiences with special needs students and my commitment to overcoming personal and societal obstacles. I am determined to make a positive impact by promoting inclusion and creating opportunities for all individuals. This scholarship will provide vital support in achieving my educational and career goals, allowing me to continue my journey and make a meaningful difference in the field of special education.

Growing up with a single mother has been one of the most defining experiences of my life, shaping my character and influencing my ambitions. When my mother and stepfather separated, she faced the daunting challenge of starting over from scratch. It was a difficult transition, marked by financial strain and emotional stress, but her resilience and determination were nothing short of inspiring. After the separation, my mother worked tirelessly to provide for our family. She juggled multiple jobs, including a second job, to make ends meet and to create a stable and nurturing environment for us. Despite the exhaustion and pressure, she never let us feel the weight of her struggles. Her dedication was unwavering, and she made our house feel like a home through her hard work and sacrifice. The situation became even more challenging when my mother was laid off from her primary job not long after the separation. Faced with this setback, she made the courageous decision to return to school full time while continuing to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). This period of her life was incredibly demanding, but she approached it with the same determination that had become her hallmark. During this time, my mother shared lessons with me that have profoundly impacted my outlook on life. One piece of advice that resonates deeply is, “Pick your hard.” She explained that while it was incredibly tough to balance school and work, it was a choice between short-term struggles and long-term rewards. Her decision to endure the immediate difficulties was driven by her commitment to providing a better future for us. This perspective has taught me that while challenges are inevitable, the way we respond to them shapes our success and fulfillment. Another lesson that left a lasting impression was, “Short-term sacrifices mean long-term payoff.” The two years of intense effort, marked by financial insecurity and personal hardship, ultimately led to greater stability and opportunities for our family. My mother’s sacrifices were made with the understanding that they would pave the way for long-term financial security and a better quality of life. This principle has guided me in my own life, reinforcing the idea that dedication and hard work are crucial for achieving meaningful goals. From my experiences growing up, I have learned that everything worth having requires effort and perseverance. My mother’s example has instilled in me a deep appreciation for hard work and the belief that persistent effort will eventually yield positive results. Her willingness to do without so that we never had to has inspired me to strive for excellence and to approach challenges with a determined and optimistic mindset. As I embark on my college journey, I am excited to apply these lessons to my academic and career goals. I am motivated to work hard and embrace challenges, knowing that the sacrifices I make now will lead to future success. My mother’s strength and resilience have shaped my ambitions and equipped me with the tools to face difficulties with courage and determination. I am committed to making a positive impact in the world, inspired by her example of perseverance and sacrifice.
      Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
Reading books has profoundly shaped my understanding of the world and my personal goals, teaching me lessons that have become cornerstones of my aspirations. One of the most important insights I've gained from literature is the understanding that you never truly know what battles others are fighting. The narratives and characters I’ve encountered in various books have revealed the complexities of human experiences, underscoring that everyone has their own struggles, often hidden from view. For example, books like To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls have illuminated the hidden layers of people's lives. To Kill a Mockingbird explores themes of injustice and empathy through the eyes of Scout Finch, showing that behind every prejudice or act of discrimination, there are deep-seated personal struggles and experiences that contribute to a person’s behavior. Similarly, The Glass Castle presents a raw and poignant depiction of the author’s tumultuous childhood, highlighting the often invisible challenges of poverty and familial instability. These stories have taught me to approach others with compassion and a deeper understanding, recognizing that everyone has their own set of difficulties that may not be immediately apparent. Another crucial lesson from my reading is that you don’t always need a superhero to overcome obstacles; sometimes, the most powerful force is belief in oneself. Characters who face overwhelming odds yet persevere through sheer determination and self-reliance have been particularly inspiring. In books like The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, protagonists embark on journeys of self-discovery and personal growth. They teach us that faith in oneself and resilience can be transformative. Santiago, in The Alchemist, pursues his personal legend with unwavering belief, while Harry Potter confronts his challenges with courage and self-belief, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. These stories have reinforced my own belief in the power of self-confidence and perseverance. The lessons learned from these books have significantly influenced my goals and aspirations. They have instilled in me a profound desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others, especially those who may be grappling with their own hidden struggles. I am passionate about pursuing a career in education because I want to create an environment where every student feels understood and supported. By fostering empathy and resilience in others, I hope to help them overcome their challenges, just as I have been inspired by the characters in the books I’ve read. Furthermore, these insights have guided me in my approach to personal growth and professional development. I am motivated to continually build my own self-belief and resilience, using these qualities to navigate my own journey and help others along the way. The idea that everyone has their own battles and the importance of self-faith have become central to my philosophy and approach to life. In summary, the books I’ve read have taught me invaluable lessons about empathy, the complexity of human experiences, and the power of self-belief. These lessons have shaped my goals and aspirations, guiding me toward a path where I can make a meaningful difference in the world, particularly in the realm of education. I am excited to carry these lessons forward, using them to inspire and support others as I work towards creating a more compassionate and understanding world.

Joy Of Life Inspire’s AAA Scholarship
Facing hardship has been an integral part of my journey, and it’s shaped who I am today. Growing up, I dealt with the complexities of having a father who struggled with narcissistic and borderline personality disorders, compounded by a traumatic brain injury. His alcoholism and erratic behavior not only endangered my safety but also left me grappling with feelings of abandonment and guilt. Despite these challenges, I have worked hard to build a life of stability and purpose. My mother is my greatest role model. After separating from my father, she took on the immense responsibility of raising me and my younger sister on her own. Despite the numerous obstacles she faced, including financial hardship and the burden of single motherhood, she went back to nursing school and earned her associate degree. Her resilience and dedication have been a constant source of inspiration for me. She taught me that perseverance and hard work can overcome even the toughest challenges. I made the conscious decision to distance myself from my father to protect my well-being. Although this choice has brought its own emotional struggles, including occasional guilt and manipulation attempts from him, I remain steadfast in my commitment to my dreams. I understand that allowing his negative influence to dictate my path would hinder my growth, so I chose to rise above these circumstances. My aspiration is to become a teacher. I want to create a safe, nurturing environment for students who might not have that comfort at home. I want to be a beacon of hope and a positive role model, embodying the very best of what I’ve learned from my mother and my own experiences. I believe in Agape love—the selfless, unconditional love that seeks to uplift and support others. I strive to give back to my community by fostering a sense of belonging and security for my future students, ensuring that they know they are valued and capable of achieving their dreams, no matter their backgrounds. By choosing to rise above my difficulties, I’ve learned that we have the power to shape our destinies, regardless of the adversities we face. My mother’s strength and my personal resolve have instilled in me a deep empathy and a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. This is how I embody Agape love and contribute to my community, and it is what motivates me to pursue my goals with passion and determination.
