Life threw me a curveball at 18. Addiction, a relentless undertow, threatened to pull me under. Lost in a sea of despair, I grappled with a dependence that stole not just my future but my sense of self. Yet, amidst the wreckage, a flicker of resilience ignited. It was a journey fueled by self-compassion, unwavering support, and a profound awakening – a calling to become a beacon of hope for those struggling in similar storms. Today, with 4.5 years of hard-won sobriety, I stand before you, not just as a survivor, but as someone dedicated to illuminating the path to recovery for others. My path to healing began with the most crucial step – learning self-compassion. Battling addiction had fueled feelings of shame and isolation. But I discovered the transformative power of treating myself with kindness and understanding. It allowed me to confront my struggles without self-judgment, paving the way for acceptance – the fertile ground where genuine healing could take root. This journey wasn't a solitary one. The unwavering support system I found became my life raft. Even during my darkest hours, the steadfast belief and compassion my loved ones showed instilled a sense of purpose and kept me afloat. Additionally, the guidance of professionals in the recovery community provided me with crucial tools and strategies to navigate the tumultuous waters of addiction. Witnessing their unwavering commitment to helping others ignited a spark within me – a desire to become a lighthouse myself, guiding others toward a safe harbor. This yearning to empower others manifests in my pursuit of a Master's degree in Clinical Counseling. Having experienced the mental health system firsthand, I am deeply motivated to contribute to the field, specifically as a counselor. My undergraduate studies in English honed my communication skills, allowing me to connect with others on a deeper, empathetic level. Analyzing the human condition through literature fostered a profound appreciation for the intricate tapestry of our inner struggles – experiences that will undoubtedly equip me to become an effective counselor, particularly for teenagers. However, my calling goes beyond academic qualifications. My personal experience with addiction fuels an unwavering passion to advocate for those still battling the storm. The statistics surrounding teenage addiction paint a stark picture, one that resonates deeply with me. I know the crippling isolation, the relentless battle against self-doubt, and the suffocating sense of hopelessness. But I also know the liberating joy of reclaiming your life, the untapped strength within each individual, and the transformative power of genuine human connection. My ultimate goal is to be the lighthouse I desperately needed at 18. I want to be a counselor who possesses the expertise and embodies the understanding and empathy born from shared experiences. I want to be a living testament to the possibility of recovery, shattering the misconception that there's an age limit on sobriety. Teenagers struggling with addiction often feel ostracized and alone, believing their situation is hopeless. I want to stand beside them, offering professional guidance and the message of unwavering hope – "You are not alone. Recovery is possible. Your life can be filled with purpose and joy." My journey towards becoming a clinical counselor reflects the very essence of service. As far back as I can remember, I've envisioned myself working as a counselor at a non-profit organization, specifically one focused on helping teenagers overcome substance abuse. This dream wasn't born out of nowhere; it stemmed from my own battles with mental health issues throughout my childhood. Those struggles not only shaped my empathy but also ignited a fierce desire to empower others facing similar challenges. Right now, I'm channeling that passion into my current role as a care coordinator. Witnessing firsthand the impact of proper counseling on foster kids has been incredibly rewarding. But it's just the first step on my journey. Once I finish my undergraduate degree, I plan to dive straight into a master's program in clinical counseling. This next chapter is about equipping myself with the knowledge and skills to become the most effective counselor I can be. My dream isn't just about a job title or a fancy office. It's about creating a safe space where teenagers grappling with substance abuse can feel heard, understood, and supported. It's about being a beacon of hope, a guiding light on their path to recovery. I want to be the counselor who walks alongside them, celebrating their victories, no matter how small, and offering a steady hand through the inevitable setbacks. I understand the darkness that substance abuse can bring, the feelings of isolation and despair. But I also know the strength that resides within each individual. By sharing my own story and the tools I acquired through my education, I aim to empower these teens to reclaim their lives. My goal is to be a testament to the power of healing and a constant reminder that they are not alone in this fight. It's a long road ahead, but fueled by my own experiences and the unwavering desire to help others, I'm determined to make a difference in the lives of these teenagers.

My name is Alyson Welborn, and for nearly a decade, the sound of a bat cracking against a ball and the thrill of competition was the soundtrack to my life. As a student-athlete, softball consumed much of my time and energy. Softball wasn't just a sport for me; it was a world unto itself, demanding dedication, discipline, and an unyielding passion. Weekends were spent on the field, practicing and playing, and countless evenings were dedicated to honing my skills. But life, as it often does, has thrown me curveballs, leading me to a new field, one filled with books and lessons instead of bases and balls. My family dynamic, unfortunately, has not always been a source of stability. My mother, battling the demons of addiction from a young age, struggled to provide the consistency I craved. My father, however, found solace and connection with me through sports. He rarely missed a game, and in my final years of playing, he even stepped up to coach me, offering guidance and support as I navigated the highs and lows of competition. Though my athletic career was tragically cut short by a severe shoulder injury, it instilled in me a valuable lesson: discipline. Juggling academics, a demanding sport, and the uncertainties of my family life forced me to develop strong organizational skills and an unwavering commitment to my goals. This tenacity, coupled with my passion for language and literature, led me to UTSA, where I am pursuing a High School Education degree with a focus on English. My future aspirations are clear: I dream of becoming an English teacher and a softball coach. This ambition stems from a desire to empower young minds and inspire them to reach their full potential, both on and off the field. I want to be that supportive presence for my students, the one who fosters a love of learning and provides guidance through life's challenges, just as my father did for me. While the diamond may no longer be my primary arena, the lessons learned there continue to shape me. The grit, determination, and teamwork honed through years of competition are now being applied to my academic pursuits and will ultimately equip me to become a dedicated educator and coach. From the crowd's roar to the quiet hum of the classroom, my journey continues, fueled by a passion for learning, a desire to connect with others, and hope to inspire the next generation to chase their dreams, whatever pitch life throws their way.

Imagine a high school hallway, not the shiny, picture-perfect kind, but the one with peeling lockers and flickering fluorescent lights. That was my stomping ground, a place where whispers of anxiety and depression tangled in my hair like cobwebs. It wasn't the idyllic teen experience, and by sophomore year, the whispers became a roar, drowning out the voices of teachers and friends. So, I made a choice, not a rebellious one, but a desperate one. I dropped out, seeking solace in the anonymity of the city streets, trading textbooks for cardboard shelters. It wasn't a life I'd romanticized, but at 18, something shifted. Recovery wasn't a sudden epiphany, and absolutely was not how I envisioned my life. It was a slow, uphill climb, each step a tiny victory over the demons I'd been wrestling. Education became my lifeline, a ladder out of the darkness. Online classes, bathed in the blue glow of my laptop screen, replaced the fluorescent hum of the hallway. It was a lonely journey, but with each completed assignment, I felt a piece of myself reattaching, a shard of hope glimmering in the cracks. College was a different beast, a buffet of majors I sampled like a picky eater. Chemistry? Nope, too many equations, not enough human connection. History? Fascinating, but where were the relatable stories of struggle and redemption? Then, serendipity struck. I found myself tutoring a student, his brow furrowed in confusion over a poem. As I unpacked the metaphors, his face lit up, a hesitant smile replacing the frown. In that moment, a spark ignited within me, not from the poem itself, but from the human connection, the act of guiding someone through the shadows of uncertainty. I saw myself in that student, the lost, confused teenager I once was. It wasn't just a career choice; it was a calling. I wanted to be the teacher I never had, the one who saw the potential under the layers of doubt, the one who whispered, "There's a way out, kid. You're not alone." My past isn't a burden, it's a roadmap, each scar a testament to resilience. It's the fuel that drives my passion, the bridge that connects me to students who feel like they're drowning in textbooks. I don't want to be just another grammar drill sergeant; I want to be a lighthouse in the storm, a living example that education can be the light at the end of the tunnel.

Recovery isn't just about staying sober. It's about reclaiming the life that addiction stole. It's the chance to finally breathe, to feel the sun on your skin and the wind in your hair without the constant ache of craving. It's about waking up in the morning with a purpose, a future stretching before you like a road map instead of a dead end. For me, recovery meant trading the grimy streets and the desperate search for my next fix for the crisp air of college campuses and the thrill of learning. It's about late-night study sessions fueled by coffee, not oblivion, and the satisfaction of a hard-earned A instead of the fleeting high of a cheap thrill. It's the hope of one day walking into a recovery high school, not as a lost soul seeking escape, but as a beacon of light, showing others that even after hitting rock bottom, you can build a life worth living. Recovery is my second chance. It's the knowledge that I'm not just existing, I'm thriving. And that, to me, is the most beautiful meaning of all.

The firsthand encounter with mental health struggles within myself and observing them in my family has anchored my belief in the urgency of destigmatizing conversations around mental well-being. These experiences have crystallized the understanding that mental health is a fundamental aspect of our overall health, deserving of the same level of compassion and consideration as physical health. This realization has reverberated through my relationships, transforming the way I approach and interact with others. The profound empathy I've developed has strengthened my ability to actively listen, understand without judgment, and provide unwavering support to those around me. My journey led me to navigate five distinct mental health and substance abuse facilities, and I encountered a pivotal moment when a suicide attempt led to a stay in a psych ward. These experiences have tested my resilience, offered valuable insights, and contributed to my growth. The difficulties I faced underscored the urgency of improving access to quality care and comprehensive support systems. While there were moments of profound empathy and understanding from mental health professionals, there were also instances of miscommunication and limited resources. These encounters highlighted the need for greater cohesion and a more holistic approach within the mental health industry. Reflecting on my journey, I am profoundly grateful for the lessons I've gleaned from various treatment centers. Even in the face of challenges, these experiences have armed me with the tools of resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to advocating for compassionate mental health support. My journey through addiction has been a profound exploration of resilience, transformation, and the unwavering human spirit. Growing up amid a backdrop of addiction within my family, I was determined that my life would diverge from that trajectory. However, circumstances led me down a path I had vowed to avoid. At just 13, a prescribed medication for a shoulder operation introduced me to opiates, and thus began my struggle with addiction. My mother's battle with addiction cast a shadow over my early years, serving as a haunting reminder of the destructive power of substances. Yet, the allure of escape from the challenges life presented proved too strong to resist. As I delved into opiates, the grip of addiction tightened, setting in motion a sequence of events that spiraled my life out of control. Dropping out of high school and facing homelessness at a tender age, I found myself ensnared by the throes of heroin addiction. The turning point came when, at the age of 18, a fatal overdose nearly claimed my life. Through a miracle and the tenacity of medical intervention, I was given a second chance. Emerging from this near-death experience, I made a life-altering decision to break the cycle of addiction that had held me captive. With unwavering determination and a newfound resolve, I embarked on the arduous journey of recovery. Today, I stand proudly as a testament to the transformative power of recovery. Embracing sobriety for 3.75 years, I am actively engaged in groups such as TXYPAA and HA in Kerrville and San Antonio, advocating for the hope and healing that recovery can bring. My experience has propelled me towards the pursuit of education, with the aim of becoming a high school teacher. Attending Taylor Swift's Fearless tour as my very first concert at the age of 9 marked the genesis of my fervent admiration for her music. This unwavering devotion, aptly described as being a "swiftie," has transcended the years, accompanying me from my formative years to my current adulthood. Taylor Swift's musical journey has served as a steadfast companion, influencing my perceptions and emotions in ways that continue to resonate within the depths of my heart. One pivotal moment that remains etched in my memory is the release of the song "Clean" when I was just 13 years old. This juncture in my life was marred by intense struggles with my mental health, most notably grappling with anorexia and the harrowing cycles of treatment it entailed. The poignant lyrics of "Clean" seemed to echo the depths of my own experiences, creating an indelible connection that transcended the mere auditory. This song became a guiding light during my tumultuous journey toward recovery, offering solace and companionship during moments when the weight of isolation threatened to overwhelm me. Even now, the " Clean " notes elicit a rush of emotions, underscoring the resilience that blooms from vulnerability. While I regrettably missed the opportunity to secure tickets after an arduous 9-hour wait in the Ticketmaster queue, the Era's Tour has been an enlightening chapter in my ongoing relationship with Taylor Swift's music. Despite this setback, modern technology has enabled me to vicariously experience the tour through the lens of TikTok live broadcasts. Amidst these virtual spectacles, one profound facet that has left an indelible impression is the prevailing sense of inclusivity that envelopes the Swiftie community and extends to society at large. The Era's Tour has emerged as a cultural milestone, emblematic of a paradigm shift towards inclusivity and camaraderie, encapsulated by the empowering mantra of "girls support girls." This newfound spirit is palpable as concertgoers trade bracelets, immerse themselves in creative dress-up endeavors, and revel in the shared joy of the experience. The tour, rather than simply comprising a series of musical performances, has evolved into a vibrant tapestry of unity, acceptance, and unabashed celebration of self-expression. In reflection, Taylor Swift's music, especially during the Era's Tour, has functioned as a mirror that reflects my personal journey, struggles, and aspirations. It has granted me the solace of knowing that I am not alone in my challenges while fostering growth and self-discovery. The anthems she crafts echo the complexities of the human experience, resonating on both an individual and collective level. The inclusivity fostered by the Era's Tour stands as a testament to the potential of music and art to cultivate connections that transcend barriers, fostering a tapestry of shared experiences that enrich and enliven our lives. From that first concert during the Fearless tour to the transformative moments inspired by the Era's Tour, Taylor Swift's music has journeyed with me as a guiding force. Through its lyrical poignancy and the sense of inclusivity it champions, her music has illuminated the path of self-discovery, lending me strength during moments of vulnerability and reminding me of the unifying power of shared experiences. Just as Swift's melodies have evolved through eras, so too have I evolved, carrying with me the lessons learned and the resilience gained from each musical chapter.
