Life is not perfect. It is full of stress and bad decisions. Every day is a new day to change your story, to learn from yesterday. Life cannot be perfected, and that is the same as golf. It took me a while to realize this after years of playing golf. I was a perfectionist and wanted everything in my life and golf game to be perfect. But golf has taught me that that is not realistic. Life is like a single golf shot. One hit could be a crisp baby draw right at the flag and the next could be a baby draw that the wind pushes out of bounds. I can have the best day of my life and suddenly the next day make not be so great.
Last year, I shot a 64 which was the lowest round of my life. Everything seemed like it clicked and I was hitting everything perfectly. When I started talking about my round with my dad, I realized that most things were not perfect. Although I made a lot of birdies, I missed so many that ended up being pars. I missed four greens that day that I happened to get up and down. I hit a drive into the hazard that I found and ended up making a birdie off of it. Even though I may have shot one of the lowest rounds I have ever had, it seemed like nothing was perfect when I looked back at it. Life will never be perfect, even when it seems like you have it all together. Just take it day by day, shot by shot.
Growing up I did not have access to country clubs, newly equipped golf clubs, or a swing coach like other golfers had. I struggled to learn how to play for a long time. My parents put in every dollar they could for my younger brother and me to learn how to play golf. We went through the fundamentals of golf and hit a bag of balls we had in our garage into a net. As years went on, we started getting better than we ever would have thought. I joined my high school golf team and finally had access to a course where I could practice whenever I wanted. I practiced almost every day and dropped 10 strokes each year of high school. I received the most improved award for three years and the most valuable player award 4 years in a row. I was the first girl at my high school to go to regionals and state. Although I did not have access to things like the other girls had, I was still able to achieve as much as they did. Life may throw you a bad hand but if you put your mind to something and stick to it, you can achieve anything! The odds are only against you if you let them.
