Cliff T. Wofford STEM Scholarship
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a doctor of sorts. It began with my interest in animals. I was fascinated with every possible animal as a young child. When I received a doctor kit, I examined every stuffed animal I owned for ailments, cuts, bruises while documenting their charts carefully. It was an intense curiosity to determine and troubleshoot the disease or underlying condition that plagued my "patients." Since then I have become more interested in the human body and all of its wonder. I plan to become a pediatric surgeon in the near future.
Science has always been a passion of mine. Thinking like a scientist on everyday issues and problem-solving along the way is something I have challenged myself to do in all my educational endeavors. I am passionate about learning and being successful in whatever I pursue.
Recently I competed in a HOSA national competition and won! We were able to secure funding to create "Daydream Dens." Our idea was to create an opportunity for teens to socialize during the pandemic while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Throughout the process, I learned how an innovative idea can come to fruition with perseverance and power tools.
This summer I participated in an intensive program offered by Georgetown University through their Medical Summer Academy. It was an experience that I will not forget. We were afforded the opportunity to examine human cadavers which I found so intriguing and confirmed how much I want to go into the medical field.
As I reflect on why STEM is a passion for me, I realize that my committee and club involvement demonstrate my commitment to science. I co-founded a committee called the Cultural Public Health Awareness Committee. As co-founder and leader of the Cultural Public Health Awareness Committee, I and my fellow founders, have created the structure of our club for the continuity of it in the future of DHS. I lead meetings, gather research, invite speakers, and find new ways to keep members engaged during meetings. The club was focused on highlighting and educating the public regarding the inequity in public health for minorities. Additionally, I was also a member of the national honor society in both math and science as well as the medical careers club. I have spent my high school career focused on STEM in many different ways. I consider myself a strong candidate for this scholarship because my experiences are diverse and multifaceted in the field of STEM.
