I'm Alexa Gaskin, a dedicated junior at the University of South Carolina-Upstate, on an inspiring journey to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
I'm deeply committed to my studies, focusing on nursing with a strong interest in surgical (perioperative) and trauma/emergency room departments. I'm excited to kickstart my nursing clinics in the fall of 2024, and I'm looking forward to proudly graduating in the spring of 2026.
Beyond the classroom, I'm an active member of the Student Nurses Association, where I've had the privilege of collaborating with like-minded peers who share my passion for healthcare.
I'm a firm believer in the power of continuous learning and growth every day. Outside of nursing, I'm an avid reader and plant enthusiast, and I'm passionate about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
I'm excited about the path I'm on and the potential to make a meaningful impact on the healthcare community. I hope you have a wonderful day

The majority of children start getting an education at the age of 5. During middle school and high school, we start to learn about the importance of community service. Community service is something that I have been a part of since my middle school years. It is still something that I do weekly as a college student. As a college student, pursuing my education further is important to me so I can be able to help people more than I am now. Currently, I am pursuing a BSN degree in nursing. Becoming a nurse is another way I can help my community by making people get better, or helping them during the worst or best time of their life.
Community service not only gives back to the community I am living in, but it also has a positive effect on me. Helping people, animals, or the environment benefits the other person/thing. For me, bringing joy or leaving a huge impact makes me feel as if I have a purpose in this world. When I participate in any type of community service, the smiles on people's faces make me feel as if I was the reason their day was made. It is important to serve your community to learn gratitude, and become humble and grateful for what you have.
The effects that community service and education can have on my family and community can have long-term benefits. For education, once I become a registered nurse, I can come back to a community that is in need of nurses. By helping out that clinic, hospital, etc. I am getting people's health back on the right track. With this, I can put a smile on a person's face by being there for that certain person. For community service, I can not only help my own family but help other families as well. Since I started community service, my close family members have started doing their own community service as well. My family would come with me to help out the community we live in.
A community service act I volunteered at was a group called Summer Circle. The group would invite low-income girls to come to our camp and learn about leadership and community service. Now that I am in college, I see a lot of girls become leaders in their homes, schools, and churches. For these families, they have told me their grades have improved and they are thinking about pursuing a higher degree in college.
Education and community service have been a part of my life since I can remember. I never saw it as a burden or something I do to make other people happy. I do this because it makes me feel like the good I’m doing is helping someone else. Helping people in the community and telling them about pursuing an education is something that I preach to people every day. I hope one day, that all of this hard work will pay off, not for me, but for the people I will help in my future.
