    Powering The Future - Whiddon Memorial Scholarship
    Life comes with unexpected challenges, and my journey in life has certainly faced them. As a black woman majoring in Biology, I have faced many challenges along the way, such as discrimination, a house fire and financial hardships. Despite these trials, I am committed to achieving my goals for the future and giving back to my community. Experiencing a house fire was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. It was a normal day, my siblings and I were getting ready for school, while my parents were getting ready for work. When suddenly our house was engulfed in flames. Fortunately, no one was hurt, however the damage was extensive enough to displace us. We lost the sense of security that comes with having a place to call home. Finding a new home took longer than anticipated. The unexpected displacement was a major setback. The fire caused significant financial hardship. While we were fortunate to not lose each other, our finances were negatively impacted by the expense of temporary housing, repairs and eventual relocation. Watching my parents struggle to keep each other comfortably stable at the time, serves to me as a reminder of the importance of financial stability. Despite these challenges, my desire to pursue higher education never weakened. My motivation for pursuing a degree in STEM, particularly biology, comes from my on-going interest in the medical field, and my desire to make a difference in the lives of others. In the medical field, I am particularly drawn to anesthesiology. This field captivates me because it combines scientific precision with humane patient care. Surgery can be an intimidating experience to many, Anesthesiologists have a job of making sure patients feel comfortable and reassured during this crucial time. This responsibility has a huge part in why I would like to pursue a job in this field The financial aftermath from the fire has impacted my pursuit of higher education, making it difficult to cover the expenses associated with college. However, despite these challenges, I am still committed to finishing my studies and reaching my goals. This scholarship would provide me crucial financial support. It will allow me to focus completely on my studies instead of my financial difficulties. Bringing me closer to reaching my goal of working in the medical field. In addition, not only will it help me accomplish my own objectives but also allow me to make significant contributions to my community in the future.

    Attack on titans, a show that captivates its audience with its characters, plot twists and insightful examination of themes such as freedom, human nature, and survival, creating a narrative that captivates its viewers intellectually and emotionally. This series has left a mark on me both as a fan who loves storytelling and as someone who was profoundly moved by its themes. From the first season, I was drawn into the split world of titans and the human struggle for survival. The intense situations created an environment of constant tension. The threat of titans drove the characters to their limits, forcing them to face their fears and make sacrifices. The main characters themselves are ultimately the reason for the show’s impact. Each of their personal journeys are filled with growth, loss and situations of triumph which made them relatable to our world. I found myself emotionally invested in their trials and tribulations, and victories. When it came to survival in the show, the theme portrayed in both physical and psychological situations. The constant threat of killing the titans created an environment where survival was not just a matter of staying alive but preserving one’s humanity. This theme resonated deeply with me because it mirrored the real-world struggle where people have to make difficult choices to survive in the face of adversity. Attack on titans is more than just an anime, it acts as a profound exploration of the human condition. The series not only entertained me but also challenged me to think deeply about the nature of humanity and values that define us.

    CATALYSTS Scholarship
    My name is Alexa Abeyie, and I attend Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have always taken part in helping my community by volunteering in various locations, including hospitals, libraries, schools and more. Everyone should volunteer in their community at least once. In times of need, individuals would appreciate assistance from others. When I volunteer, my main focus is on improving access to resources for those in need. Access to resources is the ability to obtain the necessary assistance, irrespective of financial status, race or gender. As a volunteer at the hospital, I ensure all of the patients I assist receive necessary support and care, as well as support for their emotional health during their stay and recovery. In schools, I ensure no student is left behind due to obstacles by giving all of the students I work with, equitable access to quality education and the tools and resources they need to achieve. At the library, my volunteering efforts involve organizing, cleaning, and sorting books to ensure the public has seamless access to quality resources. Moreover, I have actively assisted in free programs hosted by the library which not only fostered community engagement but also enriched and promoted the different cultures within our community. Through these activities, I took part in helping create a safe, tranquil space for all community members, including underserved groups. Furthermore, I have served as a volunteer at a store that serves the underprivileged named Partners in Care. I assisted in sorting and arranging donated goods, ensuring they were in good condition and accessible to those in need. Additionally, I provided assistance to customers, helping them to find items at an affordable price. I participated in supporting a kids' baseball team in their fundraising efforts through volunteering. My role included not only serving refreshments but also ensuring that players, coaches, families, and visitors remained hydrated and comfortable throughout the game. Beyond these practical tasks, I actively contributed to fostering a sense of camaraderie among all attendees, creating a welcoming atmosphere where connections could flourish. This experience provided me with the opportunity to engage in meaningful communication and build relationships with other dedicated community members, further strengthening our collective commitment to supporting local youth activities. In today's world, Access to resources is crucial in ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background. Providing individuals with the tools they need to achieve their goals strengthens the community by supporting education, social cohesion, and health. Promoting equal access across communities contributes to building a more equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

    Charity starts at home. My name is Alexa Abeyie and I am from Frederick, Maryland. Growing up I have always made it my mission to take part in my community. I have always believed that people should prioritize taking care of their family and community before aiding others outside of their community. I consider everyone within my community my family. This is because I have grown up with them. There is no place like home, therefore I make sure to do my part to help my family. I began volunteering at Walkersville Middle school, I helped to organize an occasion known as the fall fest. Subsequently, I volunteered at a nearby library, called the Walkersville Library. This is where I organized books, cleaned electronics, set up and assisted with events. I then volunteered at my local hospital, Frederick Memorial Hospital. During this experience I assisted in discharging and directing patients and making deliveries. Afterwards, I began to volunteer at a boutique that was aimed to give back to the elders of Frederick. During this I organized and put out clothes onto the racks, and assisted customers. Lastly, I volunteered as a concession stand worker for a baseball game. Where I provided parents and baseball players with refreshments and snacks during games. My plan to sustain community involvement after college is to locate more organizations that are in need of volunteers. I am always willing to lend a hand to someone in need whenever I have free time. Not only does it benefit the person in need, but it benefits me. Helping people makes me happy and fulfilled because I feel that I have made a positive impact on the world. I believe that everyone in this world needs kindness and love. No one in the world is too good to not provide a helping hand to someone in need. Everyone’s heart is filled with this generosity, which is what unites our people.
    Women in Healthcare Scholarship
    My entire life, I have always wanted to make a difference in the world. As a child growing up who has suffered with their self-confidence, being looked down by others because I was a black female, along with living in an environment lacking diversity. I had times where I felt hopeless with no purpose in my life. However, I did not give up because I knew that if I kept working towards my goal there would be something greater than what I could imagine at the end of the road. As a female pursuing a job in the medical field, it is common experience other's looking down on you assuming that you are not as educated as the other men pursuing the same field. My mother did not let this affect her nor am I. As a woman I will never let another person look down on me due to my age, gender or race. My name is Alexa Abeyie, I am 18 years old and attend Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. I decided to pursue the healthcare field to positively impact the lives of others. I have always been interested in working in healthcare, this stems from my mother who is a nurse and seeing the hard work she put in to provide for our family. I intend to specialize in Anesthesiology to bring a sense of comfort to patients going into surgery through pain relief. There are only three percent of black anesthesiologists in the U.S.. As a black woman, I intend to make a difference in the field by providing a sense of comfort and security. A patient going into surgery and being unconscious during it can be nerve-wracking, especially being a female in this world. For this reason, I believe that the training I receive along with my character attributes, such as my dependability, respect, and diligence, will allow patients to feel comfortable entrusting me with their health. Additionally, due to religious beliefs or previous experiences, some patients prefer to see a female doctor. Everyday there is someone going in and out of surgery, in the hopes that when they go in, they will wake up. I want to be able to aid and assist patients who are going into surgery without them feeling uncomfortable or worried. At the same time, I also wish to serve as a role model or mentor to others. I want to inspire others by demonstrating that anything is achievable with hard work.
    Career Test Scholarship
    My name is Alexa Abeyie, I attend Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. I major in Biology and plan to pursue a career in the medical field. My career goal is to become a Pediatric anesthetist. Growing up I have always wanted to work in the medical field and work with children. When I reached high school, after doing enough research on the different jobs within the medical field, I chose pediatric anesthesia as the career I wanted to pursue. As of now, I have been working to gain progressively more experience in the healthcare industry. I have volunteered as a desk assistant at Frederick Memorial Hospital in my hometown. In which I have taken patients to labor and delivery, helped patients discharge, made deliveries, and directed people to where they needed to go. Furthermore, I have completed a program called the Career Tech Center during high school to obtain my GNA and CPR certifications. I have worked in a nursing home using my GNA to gain more hands-on experience. When I began working as a GNA, I learned and developed new skills, such as dealing with frustrated residents. Additionally, I improved in my team working and communication skills. I believe that my time spent working at the nursing home will be very beneficial to me in the future since I got to interact with a variety of individuals who were all unique, which allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. In the future, I want to gain additional experience by working in another hospital, going to healthcare information meetings, and shadowing an anesthetist. Having the opportunity to observe other medical professionals and gain knowledge of the various specialties within medicine, this experience will help me grow closer to my goal. Establishing a set career goal is very important when making decisions on the type of education you want to pursue. This is due to the fact that education is expensive. My motivation for applying for this scholarship is to pursue my career goal without facing financial hardships. Everyone should have an opportunity to reach their dream job. Financial difficulties are usually what stand in the way, which is a circumstance I do not want to find myself in. When pursuing my academic goals, I want to be able to overcome any obstacles that may arise. Education helps us grow and develop by demonstrating the value of hard effort. At the end of the day, even though some have succeeded without it, education is a safe path. Additionally, It is also what I need to reach my ideal profession and make a change in people's lives.

    My name is Alexa Abeyie and I attend Xavier University, in Cincinnati, Ohio. This opportunity is meaningful to me because I am having financial difficulties covering my tuition. I value education greatly because it is one part of how I can accomplish my goal. The other part I need to reach my goal is my faith in God. I have grown up in Christian household, my beliefs started when my parents began bringing me to church. However, I believe as I got older and more independent, I began to grow closer to God. My faith is so strong now, because I am able to recognize now that I cannot live a peaceful life without God. I balance my education and praising God daily because I know that I need God to have peace in my life and ensure a successful future. In addition, I know also need to work hard in reaching my goal as God does not want his people to fall into laziness. Uneducated does not equate to laziness, but rather failing to put the necessary effort in what you set out to accomplish does. Growing up I have had trouble putting all of my trust in God. I believe this stemmed from the fact of my lack of understanding of the necessity of God in my life. When I was younger, I occasionally complained about coming to church because I didn't understand why we went and instead I would have rather stayed at home. I thank my parents for pushing me to attend church every Sunday. However, as I grew older, I began to understand that being amongst other believers, hearing your pastor explain why God loves you and why you need him could increase your own faith. Growing up, I have noticed that the moments when life felt the hardest and I thought I had no one to talk to were also the periods when I would forget to pray and read my bible. However, whenever I was feeling upset, I would think of prayer and as I would pray and talk to God, I would cry and feel better as I knew in my heart that after my prayer God has a plan for me. I have always had to cope with difficult situations in my life, from discrimination I experienced in elementary and middle school to financial hardships. I had incidents throughout elementary and middle school that damaged my confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth, issues that I still occasionally struggle with. In terms of the financial hardships which were brought on by COVID, my family and I found ourselves in a difficult situation when our house fire occurred the same year that my father lost his job as a result of the company, he was working at closing down due to the effects of covid. Through hope and faith, my family managed to get through these difficult times. I firmly believe my life would have been unimaginable if God had not been in it during these times. I plan to utilize my faith as a guiding force in reaching success in the future by growing closer to God. I desire to consistently incorporate God into every aspect of my life. Expressing gratitude to God for my blessings and turning to him in prayer during times of hardship. Additionally, I want to share with people about God and what he can do for you. This could possibly instill faith in them, especially if they have ever felt lost in life.

    My name is Alexa Abeyie, I attend Cincinnati, Ohio's Xavier University, and I am eighteen years old. I currently major in biology, and I intend to work in the medical field. My goal is to become a pediatric anesthesiologist at a children's hospital. Additionally, my ambition is to utilize my career by elevating people's awareness of the value of life through my work as a pediatric anesthesiologist. As children are our future, I want to be the person to ensure children are able to receive the best care they can. Certain life-saving surgeries that were not conceivable years ago are now possible due to anesthesia. Pediatric anesthesiology requires the knowledge of the physiology of a child. Understanding how a child's body changes is necessary for pediatric anesthesiology. Working with children has always been joyful for me, and I aim to protect and care for them because they are a part of our future. Furthermore, I take on the duty of providing a sense of care for the patient's family as well. One of the things that people fear the most is having surgery or seeing their loved one have to go through surgery. I will establish a sense of a trusting relationship with the child and the family by being the person who brings peace throughout surgery. I will use my profession as a way of utilizing my career to increase people's appreciation for life. I have always been passionate about working in the medical field. I'm attending my university because I have such a strong desire to acquire the knowledge to achieve my objective. Life is precious because, whether or not a person is related to someone else, when they enter our lives we experience their emotions and wish them well because, as human beings, we can envision ourselves in whatever situation they may be in. This is why, as a future healthcare professional, I am so driven to advocate for this. Additionally, children also require our support. In some cases children are incapable of making independent decisions. For this reason, it is my responsibility as an anesthesiologist to make sure the child is comfortable and safe. Depending on the patient's age, going into surgery might be frightening and confusing. However, by utilizing my power as a doctor, I can give my patient a greater say and include them in conversations that they would not normally participate in. To ensure all of my future ambitions will come to fruition, I would need this scholarship. I appreciate any assistance with paying for my tuition because I am in need. I chose to apply for this scholarship because I believe this scholarship provided the perfect prompt for me. It gave me an opportunity to explain my goal and intentions.
    Dema Dimbaya Humanitarianism and Disaster Relief Scholarship
    Volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they have the heart, once said by Elizabeth Andrew. The natural urge to help people has always been in my life. I began volunteering in elementary school in the few ways I could till now in many other ways. I’ve always enjoyed helping out others when I could instead of sitting around. This brought joy to myself and others, seeing others have relief or enjoyment when another person decides to help out has always brought contentment to me. I plan to contribute more in this area, by being able to travel and help developing countries. I started contributing in my community during elementary school. I attended a Montessori school, in which the classes and grades were a bit different. During my years of 4-6 grade. I contributed by offering to teach and help preschoolers read, in addition to helping my art teacher clean her brushes and palettes. I enjoyed doing this during school days after I finished my classwork and when there was not much to do. This need to help others out continued into middle school. After 6th grade, I transferred to a new middle school. This change was drastic for me in which it was hard to meet new people since everyone else already knew each other. Although it was difficult to make new friends, I decided to put myself out there, in which I joined the volunteers working to set up our fall fair. It was a tradition that every year our middle school put on a fair for the students to enjoy with their friends and family. During this experience, I would work with others to create posters and put activities together. This went on for days after school, as we all worked together to set up this fair. Fortunately due to this the fair was a success. I continued to volunteer during High school, the many different experiences I went through helped me gain skills in addition to helping others. I began volunteering in ninth grade at my local library Walkersville Library. I came to volunteer every Saturday morning to organize books, clean computers, tablets and kid toys. This experience has helped improve my organization and cleaning skills. In addition I also kept the library clean and organized. Due to COVID, the library closed down for a while. In eleventh grade, I began to volunteer at a boutique, named Partners in Care. At the boutique, I helped by organizing donated items, price-tagging clothing and ringing up customers. Due to the boutique’s limited staff, my experience there benefited the employees, in addition I developed and improved in becoming a fast paced worker and a problem solver. During my senior year, I started to volunteer at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. In which I assisted in pushing those in need in wheelchairs, discharging patients, and delivering deliveries. In addition, during this year I also volunteered at Glade elementary school, helping staff sort books.At the little leagues baseball games, I helped out with the concession stand. My experience has been beneficial, as well as helping me advance in team working abilities. From a child coming from immigrants, I understand how it is to struggle and start from the bottom. This background has led me into becoming a person who always wants to help out, in ways I can. I plan to help out more in bigger situations, in which I can make a bigger impact. I believe that everyone should volunteer and small things such as volunteering at school or the library can make a big impact on you and others.

These circumstances have been hard for us, regarding that we lost our house in a fire, and my father losing his job due to the company closing down from the effects of covid.
    @normandiealise #GenWealth Scholarship
    Alexa Abeyie Walkersville High School 29 April 2023 Generational Wealth Generational wealth, Assets passed through generations. Generational wealth to me means having more freedom and privilege in your life to think about what you plan to achieve in your life without worrying about finances. I believe that if you make enough money and have the option to give some of your wealth to the next generation, you should. Although generational wealth does not shield the next generation from hardships, it does give them more options in life. I intend to accomplish this by picking a career I enjoy that pays well enough that I will have money left over to save. While generational wealth is beneficial for generations to come, there are challenges that can prevent you from achieving this. Substantial wage inequalities play a huge role in each generation's capacity to build up enough wealth to pass on. This ranges between racial and gender groups. According to the labor department, Black workers make $0.76 for every $1 that a White worker makes. While other races can make between $0.73 to $1.12. Regarding Gender wage gaps, Women can make between $0.66 cents between $0.83 cents to every dollar a man makes. Although these disadvantages can have a huge effect on you especially if you are a minority. There are great benefits to it, if you have the privilege or advantage to be able to accumulate your wealth to pass on. Generational wealth to me is very important because it gives the next generation the option to accomplish more. Giving your children a sizable financial edge accomplishes this, allowing you to feel somewhat at peace and while allowing you to stop worrying about your children after your death. Saving money, developing numerous sources of income, such as investing in real estate, the stock market, or beginning a business are some approaches to accumulating generational wealth. In particular, I intend to accomplish this by accumulating a sizable sum of wealth, making stock market investments, and launching a side business. Once I have saved up enough wealth, I will create a will and testament. Making sure my savings are properly dispersed. There are benefits and drawbacks to generational wealth in various ways. However, if you have the chance to accumulate it so that you can eventually pass it on to your children and perhaps your grandchildren, you should. Give the next generation the freedom to pursue their dreams without being constrained by their financial circumstances. Unfortunately, I was unable to benefit from generational money, which has complicated things like my ability to attend college. I therefore do not want my kids to experience the same things I have.
