I follow my dreams everyday through my work, life, and studies. I study education because it is the strongest foundation on which to build knowledge and creativity. My social life is filled with fascinating book club discussions with my closest friends and meeting imminent experts in early childhood literacy and variables of academic achievement. My studies in education research, American Sign Language, and literature fill my life with joy, hope, and a desperation for change. Through a continuous higher education including a masters and ph.d. in curriculum and instruction, I can make the differences I want to achieve by furthering the knowledge of fellow educators.     My name is Alana Stephenson, a rising college senior, pursuing Teacher Education at Stephen F Austin State University. I have had to face multiple challenges throughout my life, both personally and academically. However, the steadfast resolution to teach and positively affect society motivated me even in my darkest hours. Despite the adversities, I have maintained a sterling 4.0 GPA in my university studies, demonstrating my determination and tenacity in seeking personal development and the pursuit of my academic goals. Growing up, I led a far from "standard" childhood. My teachers labeled me as a 'distracted delinquent,' yet they failed to understand the immense burden I bore every day. I needed to be more than just a sister to my younger sibling, Hannah, I had to become a parent. Long before our parents' tumultuous divorce, I was navigating a minefield of neglect, coping with my father's glaring absences and my mother's withdrawal. In becoming an inadvertent caregiver, my academic performance and mental health suffered during elementary and middle school. Notwithstanding, the scarring experiences taught me to prioritize love, safety, and self-esteem beyond academic scores. The trials continued through high school. The familial situation was still volatile, yet I found solace in an unexpected place: participating in my school's color guard. This decision reshaped my life, imbuing me with self-worth, body positivity, and the discipline to overcome the most significant hurdles. Simultaneously, I began working diligently and secured a loan to fund my academic pursuits independently. Now, as a senior at Stephen F Austin State University, I am fulfilling my dream to influence young minds. I am working round the clock as a MOD Pizza Trainer and as a lead undergraduate research assistant in the national early childhood literacy iWRITE Project at Texas A&M. My work researching educational assessments and instructional methods has fortified my passion for teaching and educational research. My vision post-graduation is to immerse myself in a high-needs school district, serving as a beacon of reliable support and fostering an environment of innovation, excitement, and wonder. Using my academic background and personal experiences, I intend to develop research-based teaching methodologies to share with fellow educators globally. Unsafe playground environments can lead to serious injuries and accidents, which can have long-lasting consequences on a child's physical and mental health. Therefore, playground safety should be a top priority for educators, caregivers, and community members. As a future teacher, ensuring playground safety requires comprehensive training in playground safety and supervision. I would take the following actions to make sure I receive extensive training in this area: 1. Pursuing Professional Development: I would actively seek out professional development opportunities related to playground safety and supervision. This could include attending workshops, training sessions, or courses specifically geared towards playground safety best practices. 2. Collaborating with Experts: I would collaborate with experts in the field of playground safety, such as occupational therapists, physical education specialists, or playground designers, to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of safe playground environments. 3. Implementing Safety Protocols: I would work with school administrators and colleagues to develop and implement safety protocols for playground supervision.     My teachers saw me as a distracted delinquent, but everyday I went home to be a parent for my little sister. I hated my parents, and my little sister, Hannah, hated me. For years before our parents finally divorced, my dad would disappear for weeks at a time, and the more that happened, the longer my mom would lock herself in her room. I had to take on the responsibility of an adult at such a young age that my academic capabilities and my mental health were drastically affected throughout elementary and middle school. Some days I would talk and laugh nonstop, and other days, I wouldn't say a word. Not one teacher ever asked me how I was doing or if I was okay. They prioritized student grades on paper rather than our needs for love, safety, and self-worth. Since middle school, I knew I wanted to teach students whether I was a choir director or a SAILS teacher aid, but I still felt stuck in a negative headspace. Then came high school. I tried out for our school's color guard, and it was the most influential decision I had made up to that point in my life. Even though my parents were still in a custody battle, my dad went to rehab, my sister was institutionalized, my mom had ovarian cancer, and the world was forced to quarantine, I still had color guard. Color guard gave me my best friends, my self-worth, my positive body-image, and the self-discipline and strength to overcome any challenge put before me. Still, I knew I wanted to teach no matter what, so I began working three jobs and acquired my one and only loan. Now, I am less than two years away from teaching in my own classroom, and I am filled with more passion and excitement than ever. I now work two jobs. I am a MOD Pizza Trainer and a Texas A&M lead undergraduate research assistant for the national early childhood literacy iWRITE Project. Here, I have discovered my enthusiasm for educational research of assessments and instructional methods. After I graduate, I will teach in a high-needs school district to offer my support to the best of my abilities as a new teacher. I strive to create a world in which my future students and I will be filled with innovation, excitement, and wonder. My experiences will continue to grow in and out of the classroom as I seek to create my own methodologies through research projects to then share with fellow educators. My research-based teaching methods and assessments will be shared through workshops and developed programs across the world. I also want to travel the world to learn from diverse teaching environments and cultures while remaining a teacher that models as an invigorating learner for my students.
