Sandy Jenkins Excellence in Early Childhood Education Scholarship
When I was eight my mother passed away from a brain tumor. I moved to a neighborhood that some would call ghetto but, we became like one big family, so when the younger kids needed help or were confused by their schoolwork I was there to help, after helping the kids, and seeing the looks on their faces when they finally understood what they were learning in class it made my heart light up. That's when I knew working with children was something I had to do, I wanted to continue seeing kids faces light up when they learned something new. When the covid pandemic hit and classes went online, school became difficult not just for myself, but for the kids in my school disctrict, video learning lacked the connection between classmates and educators. When school went back in-person the next year, it left students and teachers behind by a year and a half. Leaving them chaotically struggling to understand the year they're in.
My senior year of high school covid started to settle down, watching the younger generation struggle adapting to their new classes, classmates, and teachers. I realized that in order to help both the incoming generation and the current youngest generation adapt to their classes, and grow to be the future adults of society. Someone has to be there for children at the start of their school career, to teach kids how to spell their name, how to read, how to write, to speak with their friends, and share with others. In order to see children succeed in the future, someone has to be there to answer their all their questions, and show them that they matter.
Working with children has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, children are always overlooked by adults and never get the chance to know that their opinions matter. Pursuing early childhood education and helping children find, determine, and work toward their goals and dreams, is how I want to see my work days in the future. I want to see the light on childrens faces when they learn the things they've always wanted to know. It makes my heart feel so bright and full watching kids find their passion, and get excited over the little new things they learned about themselves, and the people around them. Children get taken for granted, and we forget how much about ourselves we learn from them, as much as I want to teach kids, I want them to be able to share what they do know, and watch as they begin to communicate with people who learn differently, look differently, and grew up differently from them.

I love seeing children's faces light up when they learn something new, or answer something correctly. I've always wanted young children to know that they are the future and they matter. I want kids to get their questions answered and enjoy learning new things as they grow to experience life. I want to be the teacher that helps them grow to be the person that they believe they can be. I want to be remebered as the teacher that kids can come to at anytime with anything. I want to be remebered the way that I remember my teachers. Throughout my high school career, my teachers and staff members were always there when I needed to either vent about my life, cry about my past, or just sit and play a game of uno. I want to continue on pursuing a career in education, so I can be the teacher that that could allow at least just one student to escape from their home, from their reality, learn about themselves, learn about the world, get ready for the next stage in their life, and enjoy it.
