I'm currently a second-year student at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I'm studying to become a bilingual elementary teacher. I believe the role of a teacher is very important because of the direct impact teachers have on so many young lives.
Teaching is something I knew I wanted to do since I was an elementary student myself. I admired the creativity, community, friendships, and lessons that went into running a classroom.
Another factor that pushed me towards teaching is that I've always felt a strong conviction to be that role model for others. I was able to fill that role through school, sports and clubs. As the captain of my soccer and volleyball teams in high school, I was placed with the responsibility of leading my teammates. Through this role, I learned how to be a leader, lend a hand, and take interest in the well-being of my peers. I was proud to be someone my teammates could look up to and I hope that I can be the role model young students need in their lives.

One of my most vivid memories of a playground accident was at a public park playground. My cousins and I were running around playing when we heard a kid start desperately screaming and crying. A little boy had opened the top of his head and was bleeding profusely. This happened because he jumped underneath the jungle gym and hit his head with a sharp screw. My aunt gave the boy's mother a clean diaper to stop the bleeding before he was taken to the hospital for stiches. Although this traumatic experience did not happen on a school playground, I can attest to the dangers of unsafe playground equipment. I believe schools need to provide safe playground equipment, as well as, train teachers to properly supervise students at play so these accidents can be prevented.
Schools are supposed to be a safe haven for students to learn, play, and grow. Every day parents put their children's lives in the hands of educators and trust they will keep them safe. Andrea Tyrah DeBruhl's family had to live out a parent's worst nightmare when they learned they had lost their daughter under the care of her school. These kinds of accidents leave us asking how did this happen and how could this have been prevented. The answer is regulated playground equipment and playground duty training.
As a person who plans to teach at the elementary level, playground safety is something I must advocate for to ensure the well-being of my students. A way I would do this would be to ask my principal for adequate training before taking on playground duty. This would include how to vigilantly supervise playing students, when to intervene in a dangerous situation, etc. I would also check that equipment meets safety measures such as proper cushioning for playground floors and covering protruding bolt ends, as I have personally witnessed the dangers of sharp exposed screws on a playground.
Ultimately, children should feel safe to freely play while safety measures are in place to protect them. With more precautions surrounding playground safety, children will be better protected from falling victim to these tragedies. Andrea DeBruhl's story has allowed me to learn more about the importance of playground safety. As a former Girl Scout myself and as Andrea said, I promise “To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.” In her memory, I promise to be an advocate for children's safety so that we can create safer playing environments in schools.
