CREATIVE. INSPIRED. HAPPY Mid-Career Writing Scholarship
Growing up, I was timid and struggled to communicate with others. I discovered a way to express myself when I wrote an essay on To Kill a Mockingbird in the 9th grade. When my teacher read my essay aloud to the class, it was a turning point—I finally felt seen and heard. That moment built my confidence, and though my grades weren't always the best, I found that I excelled in writing. I thoroughly believe that writing played a crucial role in helping me get into college.
As I explored different genres, sports writing captured my heart, particularly after reading columns by Bill Simmons. I began practicing by writing about my favorite baseball team, the New York Mets. However, after graduating college and starting my career, I drifted away from writing. Still, I continued to write weekly reflections for my church, striving to be witty, funny, and insightful. Writing has always been my way of connecting with the world, and now I'm eager to take the next step in my journey.
After college, life took me in different directions as I worked various jobs—construction, valet parking, real estate, and waiting tables. Though I wasn't writing these years, I never lost my passion for writing. In fact, it was during this time that I truly began to appreciate the craft of writing. I found solace in books, whether during a quiet moment between shifts or late night hours. I was mesmerized by how authors could string together words to create phrases that leaped off the page, drawing me into their world.
An author's ability to arrange words so that they could evoke strong emotions or paint vivid images in my mind fascinated me. I was particularly drawn to how certain writers had a unique formula—a blend of rhythm, word choice, and structure—that could captivate readers. I knew that I wanted to learn how to do that, too. I tried to master the art of writing in a way that could engage and excite others, just as I had been inspired by the works of the authors I admired.
As life unfolded, I received an unexpected opportunity to become a Middle School teacher at an international school, where I now teach language arts and literature. Every day, I have the privilege of exploring books with my students, rediscovering my own love for writing alongside them. This role has been transformative—where I once was a shy and timid individual, teaching has helped me find my voice and confidence. I'm no longer the quiet person I once was; instead, I stand in front of a classroom full of eager minds, sharing my passion for the written word. Alongside teaching, my studies at seminary graduate school have deepened my appreciation for the power of writing. My goal now is to nurture young minds through language arts and refine my own writing skills, particularly in the context of my seminary studies, where I hope to inspire others through thoughtful and impactful writing.
This scholarship would be instrumental in helping me achieve these goals. It would assist in covering the costs of my graduate studies and allow me to further my education in writing, allowing me to better serve my students and the communities I engage with. Writing has been a constant source of growth and joy throughout my life, from building my confidence as a young student to shaping my career and personal journey. With this scholarship, I plan to continue my journey as a writer and educator, inspiring others to discover the transformative power of writing, just as I did.
