Throughout my four years in high school, I was fortunate enough to have been offered amazing opportunities that helped shape me into the person I am today. One of the most significant experiences was the P-Tech program at South Oak Cliff High School, an early college program that allowed me to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously. The program was challenging, but it provided me with the necessary tools to prepare for my freshman year of college as well as making new and useful connections. P-Tech also opened doors for me that I never thought were possible like getting my first internship.
Juggling college work, high school work, a job, and extracurricular activities can be a daunting task, but I consider myself fortunate to have been a part of the P-Tech program at my school. The program helped me to develop my time management skills, personal responsibility, and persistence while maintaining a busy and productive schedule. I learned how to balance my academic and personal life and this experience will be valuable as I transition to college. With so many different responsibilities, I had to create a schedule that allowed me to prioritize my tasks and make the most of my time. Having good time management skills will be essential when I start college because I will need to manage my time effectively to attend classes and complete assignments. This also taught me the importance of taking ownership of my actions, being reliable, and following through on commitments.
During this program, I was exposed to numerous options and opportunities that I would not have otherwise considered. Not only did it inspire me to expand my horizons, but it gave me access to advantages that were not available to students on the comprehensive side of my high school. One of these advantages included easier access to internships which allowed me to gain valuable knowledge and experience. Through P-Tech, I secured my first paid internship with PepsiCo, a multinational food, snack, and beverage corporation. During my internship at PepsiCo, I had the privilege of working with a team of professionals who were dedicated to their work and were willing to share their knowledge and experience. Being accepted into this internship with PepsiCo was not only exciting for me getting the chance to work with such a successful organization but also helped me grow professional skills, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills that will benefit me not only in college but when I begin my career as well.
In conclusion, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity helped shape who I am today and will continue to help me as I move forward in life. Learning persistence, personal responsibility, and problem-solving skills, etc., will be the lessons I carry with me as I embark on my college journey, where I will undoubtedly face challenges and setbacks along the way. As a result of these experiences, I know I can push through anything I need to because of this hands-on approach I was granted during my time in high school. Aside from academic achievements, I had the honor of meeting some of the wisest and most influential people who offered me valuable guidance and encouragement when I needed it the most. Lastly, I was able to gain first-hand exposure to the inner workings of a global corporation and understand the challenges and opportunities that come with working in a large organization. I will always be thankful to have been a part of South Oak Cliff High School’s P-Tech program and will continue to give back as I grow older.
