A couple of months ago, my 10-year-old brother Hamza stood up and took his first steps. Seeing him walk brought tears to my eyes as he's been struggling with development problems since birth along with my younger sister, Hanin. I am a high school student who lives in a low-income household of six, and an older brother to three siblings. I aspire to take advantage of the opportunities I've been given to elevate my education to the next level and follow a successful career in the science and medical industry in order to become a pediatrician and help children like Hamza and Hanin. I plan on going to a 4-year university and majoring in biology in order to further explore my interests in science and prepare for medical school. My dream is to enter the medical field as a pediatrician who's liked and admired by his patients. It is a commonality that doctors are not too popular with kids. In fact, most kids dread going to the doctor's office, clinic, or hospital. Along with my experience with kids, my passion to help people, and my desire to cast smiles on kids' faces, I plan to alter this perception in the minds of those who need medical help but are afraid of it. Creating a welcoming environment for children will not only help the doctors and the medical team, but it will also make the parents' lives easier. Someone who has inspired me in my way of thinking is someone I hold dear to me. As I've mentioned before, my brother Hamza was born with a certain condition that slows his physical and mental development. Normal milestones that kids reach at the age of 2 and 3, Hamza is just now able to accomplish at 10. While he doesn't talk, Hamza and I communicate through smiling and laughter. Out of my siblings, he's the one I connect to the most; therefore, when one of the only words that he's ever spoken was my name, happiness was brought to my heart. This was inspiring to me because not only did he overcome another obstacle, my brother Hamza has been struggling his whole life and trying his best to live with the disadvantages he's been given. Hamza's efforts changed my perspective on a problem that everyone around the world faces. People dream of becoming successful, rich, and happy in life, but a common issue that troubles many is the starting point. Some are born with success and others have to work their entire lives to get a glimpse of it. My point is that no matter where your starting point may be, the finish line will always be reachable as long as you work hard enough for it. Hamza being born with disadvantages and still being able to see results a decade later is what changed my perspective regarding this topic.
