    Ultimate K-Pop Stan Scholarship
BTS quite directly saved my life. No, that is not an exaggeration. It is not a lie, nor is it only there to capture an audience. The KPOP band known as BTS saved my life. I have always been dealing with depression and anxiety throughout my life. But it was nowhere near as bad as it was sometime in 2021. Truthfully, the whole year felt like a blur. Between distancing myself from my friends, ignoring and blocking out my parents and family, and dealing with the PTSD that came from being sexually assaulted for months. Through all this, I wondered what it would be like to die. To leave the world and all the messed up things about it. To no longer deal with every single thing pulling me down and down and down, deeper into the lonely hole I had dug for myself. Before this time, I had an appreciation for BTS. I saw a display for their albums in the mall sometime in 2020 and decided to see what the hype was about. “Dynamite”, “On”, and “Lie” were the first songs I listened to, and by the time the song “Stay Gold” came onto my Spotify, I was hooked. BTS was everywhere. They had collaborations with major companies, appeared on live TV for some performances, and were on the cover of every magazine I saw while shopping. Over and over, I tried to share my favorite songs and music videos with my friends and family. And over and over, I was shut down. Called “obsessed” by classmates because…honestly, that is the cliche of a teen girl who likes a boy band. They are “obsessed” and over the top. I was made fun of for my taste in music. Eventually, I gave up trying to share it. KPOP, despite how much headway it had made, was still not “normal” to the Western audience. So, I kept it to myself. Alone in my room after school, I would watch their reality TV show, their appearance on the James Corden show, and the music videos on repeat. Then, my life went to shit. And I found myself alone more than ever. My PTSD made it so I could not attend the last two weeks of trade school or attend my graduation -- I would drive to my mom’s work and spend all day in her office, crying, sleeping when I could, and watching BTS. More so than ever, I was in the depths of my depression. I was seeing my doctors and therapist more often. Days all blended into gray, abstract concepts and I was falling through the motions of life. I thought about what life would be like without me. How would everyone be? Better off without me? Would I be less of a burden? I dreamt about my funeral and the kind of speeches they would give. Despite all this, there was one thing that kept me going. The only thing that, at the time, made me feel like I should see through one more day. That was BTS. Them, and their “Love Yourself” campaigns made me want to be better..for them. Like I was proof their efforts meant something. They were always there for me when I needed someone. Slowly, I dug myself out of that hole. Slowly, because of them, I live for myself now.
    Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
My ideal bookshelf would have books dripping with swoon-worthy romances. The kind that makes you put the book down and blush alone in your room. That would be anything by Ali Hazelwood, an author I found via #BookTok and subsequently read all her books. Though the romance genre is a favorite of mine, it is clear that you can see the popularity that the TikTok book community has had in brick-and-mortar stores, with the multiple #BookTok sections added to stores being the biggest example. My ideal bookshelf would be crowded with dark alleyways and darker intended characters…ones with secrets to keep and enemies to slay. These would be accompanied by a “found family” theme, exploring your potential within a friend group amidst the smoggy sidewalks of Ketterdam in a #BookTok favorite, “Six Of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo. My ideal bookshelf would harbor a book that feels out of place. Between romantic stories and fantastical epics, there is something different. It is a book that provides a change of perspective. One that I recommend to my friends and family going through hard times. For those who need a laugh, or who need something entertaining to read, but are not quite ready for something outside the realm of non-fiction. There, on my shelf, would be two of my favorite books and my top recommendations: “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy and “Educated”, by Tara Westover. The former’s popularity has been amplified by the TikTok book community, and there is no short reason why. The humor and honesty that blended into a harmonious story has elements that anyone could find relation to. The latter has not yet made it’s #BookTok debut from what I can tell. Sure, it came out a few years ago, but it is an intriguing story that I only wished got more attention online. It is a compelling read that holds us close as we walk into the life of people who live…let’s say… a little differently than most. To be sure, it was my introduction to the greater non-fiction category. It is always my first thought when a friend asks the most beautiful question possible: “Got any book recommendations?” My ideal book collection wouldn't just be about one theme; it would encompass a variety of genres, each book offering a unique experience. This collection is a reflection of my true self, allowing me to immerse myself in stories that will stay with me forever.

    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
Mental illness has affected me in a profound way throughout my life. As someone who has struggled with depression, anxiety, and PTSD, I have experienced various challenges that affect my day-to-day life and have also changed my perspective on life. These challenges have not only impacted me on a personal level but have also influenced my advocacy work and career goals. When COVID-19 hit, my anxiety heightened to the point where I didn’t return to school. I stayed fully remote for eighteen months. My mental health came crashing down. I lost interest in everything and I isolated myself. After a long time, I sought help from my doctor and a therapist that she had suggested. All of us worked on getting me out of this hole I found myself in, through lifestyle changes, regular checkups, and medication. Slowly, I began to climb out. My mindset changed and I gained back my interests and my hobbies -- everything seemed to be going better. Then I was raped. Repeatedly. And once again, I found myself going deeper and deeper into that hole. For months, I carried this experience with me. I did not tell my parents, my friends, or my doctors. For months I let the emotional toll of what I felt was my fault claw at me and scare me into silence. Until I couldn't anymore. I broke. I was no longer as strong as I had once thought. I needed help. At that moment, I saw it as a weakness. That I was not able to keep going through life the way I had before, the way I worked so hard to earn back. But it was not. Crying to my parents, therapists, and doctors as I told them over and over again--reliving the assault and rape that lasted months--was the strongest thing I had ever done, and might ever do. I was strong enough to ask for help. The experience with sexual assault has left a deep impact on my life and my mental health. I had been diagnosed with PTSD, struggling with anxiety, flashbacks, and hypervigilance. I didn't sleep for months, afraid of another nightmare. I didn't return to school for the rest of the year. I didn't go anywhere without my parents. All of this affected my ability to form trusting relationships and has made it difficult for me to feel safe in my surroundings. However, therapy and connecting with others who have had similar experiences have helped me in my journey toward healing. I started attending therapy sessions more regularly. While it was challenging to confront my trauma, therapy helped me develop coping mechanisms that allowed me to manage my symptoms more effectively. I learned to prioritize self-care and established healthy routines that helped me maintain my mental health. While mental illness has presented many challenges, it has also inspired me to pursue a career in mental health advocacy. I want to help others who may be struggling with similar challenges, and I am passionate about promoting mental health awareness and destigmatizing mental illness. I am currently working on a documentary project that explores the experiences of people living with mental illness, and I hope to use my platform as a filmmaker to raise awareness and spark important conversations. Overall, while mental illness has undoubtedly impacted me in significant ways, it has also taught me valuable lessons about resilience, self-care, and the importance of seeking help when needed. Through my experiences, I have become an advocate for mental health and hope to use my voice to positively impact the world.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My experience with mental health has deeply shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. The height of the pandemic forced me to stay fully remote, and during this time, I experienced depression firsthand. Seeking help, I started seeing a therapist who became invaluable as I navigated through traumatic events, leading to diagnoses of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Since my diagnosis, I have been actively working on coping mechanisms and identifying triggers. I have created a support group of trusted individuals with whom I can freely talk about my struggles. Additionally, I have become an advocate for mental health awareness, using my platforms to speak on the issue and support others. Through my advocacy, I have been able to help people facing mental health challenges. I supported someone with an eating disorder, offering encouragement and listening when they needed it. I also aided my father, who experienced similar issues, by providing various options on how to cope. I convinced him to seek help and try medication, and now he is doing remarkably well. My experiences have reinforced my desire to help others. The music, movies, and shows that supported me during difficult times inspired me to become a filmmaker. I want to use my work to shed light on the realities of mental health, emphasizing the need for help and understanding. I aim to show the rawness of these struggles and offer hope to those who may feel alone and lost. Mental health is something I live despite, not with. I have faced many moments of despair, but I have learned to acknowledge those feelings and replace them with things I love. I want to be that source of strength for others. I want to be the reason someone keeps going and seeking help, just like my father did. In the future, my goal is to create films that highlight the experiences of people with mental health issues, not glorifying but portraying reality and the path to recovery. I want to be an encourager like my mother is for me during my toughest moments. My ultimate achievement would be to help someone find the strength to seek help and find hope, just as I did. My experience with mental health has taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of support. It has shaped my determination to make a difference, not only in my life but also in the lives of others. As I pursue a career in filmmaking, I hope to create a positive impact and help people realize that they are not alone. Mental health should not define us; it is something we can overcome with the right support and understanding.

    Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
One technology that truly inspires me about the way it can make the world a better place is renewable energy. As the world grapples with the pressing challenges of climate change and the need for sustainable development, renewable energy offers a powerful solution that has the potential to transform our planet. Renewable energy technologies, such as solar power, wind power, and hydropower, harness the natural resources abundantly available to us and convert them into clean and renewable sources of electricity. This shift away from fossil fuels not only mitigates the adverse environmental impacts associated with traditional energy sources but also offers a myriad of social and economic benefits. One of the key inspirations of renewable energy lies in its ability to combat climate change. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy helps to mitigate the devastating effects of global warming, such as rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and sea-level rise. This technology presents an opportunity to transition to a low-carbon economy, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come. Moreover, renewable energy promotes energy independence and access to electricity in regions where traditional energy infrastructure may be limited or nonexistent. In rural areas and developing countries, off-grid renewable energy solutions can bring light, power, and connectivity to communities that were previously underserved. This opens up new possibilities for education, healthcare, and economic growth, fostering a more equitable and inclusive society. The transformative power of renewable energy extends beyond the environmental and social realms. It also fuels innovation and economic prosperity. The rapid advancements in renewable energy technologies have led to job creation, with the sector now employing millions of people worldwide. The shift towards renewable energy has also stimulated research and development, encouraging breakthroughs in energy storage, grid integration, and efficiency. Witnessing the impact of renewable energy on communities and the environment fills me with hope and optimism. It serves as a reminder that technology can be a powerful force for positive change. As we continue to invest in and adopt renewable energy solutions, we have the opportunity to shape a future where clean, sustainable, and affordable energy is accessible to all. This inspires me to advocate for and contribute to the ongoing transition towards a renewable energy-powered world.

Diane Amendt Memorial Scholarship for the Arts
Growing up, art has always been a passion of mine. I would spend hours drawing, painting, and creating things out of whatever materials I could find around the house. My dad was a major influence in my pursuit of art and would encourage me to create and would even enter my artwork into local fairs. Each year, I was proud to win first place for my paintings on the pieces of plywood he would give me to paint on. My love for art expanded beyond painting and drawing, and I became interested in graphic design. In high school, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take two years of college-level graphic design classes. These classes introduced me to the world of graphic design and helped me develop a new set of skills, allowing me to create digital art, design logos, and posters, and explore different mediums of art. These classes inspired me to pursue graphic design as a career and helped me realize my potential as an artist. Since high school, my passion for art has continued to grow, and I have explored other forms of art such as filmmaking. I have volunteered at a local public access tv station, where I am currently directing, writing, and editing a documentary about drug abuse and mental health in my state. I have also applied the skills I learned from graphic design to various projects, including my senior project presentation. My dad was the biggest inspiration and support system in my artistic journey. He encouraged me to create from a young age and provided me with the tools to do so, including giving me pieces of plywood to paint on and taking me to piano lessons. He recognized my talent and pushed me to continue pursuing my craft, always providing constructive criticism and guidance. His belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue my passions and to teach myself new skills in graphic design and filmmaking. Without my dad's encouragement and support, I would not be the artist I am today. In conclusion, art has had a profound impact on my life, and my art education has played a crucial role in my development as an artist. My dad and graphic design teacher inspired and pushed me to explore my creativity and to pursue my passion for art. Their guidance and support have helped me realize my potential as an artist and have encouraged me to continue pursuing my craft.

In addition to addressing important social issues through my work, I also want to create films that provide a sense of comfort and hope for those who may be struggling. I believe that storytelling has the power to heal and inspire, and I want to use my skills as a filmmaker to create films that offer a sense of solace and reassurance to those who feel they can't be comforted. Finally, I plan to make a positive impact on the world by creating films that accurately represent diverse perspectives and experiences. I believe that the media has a powerful role to play in shaping our perceptions of the world, and I want to use my platform as a filmmaker to challenge stereotypes and promote understanding between different communities. In conclusion, my passion for filmmaking is rooted in a desire to create meaningful stories that have the power to make a positive impact on the world. Whether I am raising awareness about important social issues, offering comfort to those in need, or promoting understanding between different communities, I am committed to using my skills as a filmmaker to make a difference. With this scholarship, I will be able to further my education and pursue my dreams of creating films that have the power to change lives.
    Joe Ford Trade Scholarship
As a student in digital arts and production design, I have honed my ability to think creatively and outside the box. I have a passion for problem-solving, which is a critical skill for anyone looking to enter the trade. Here are some specific examples of how I have demonstrated these skills in recent years. This trade is important to me because everything you view is part of the media. Tv shows, posters, and commercials all have a team of people working on making it its best version possible. I want to be a part of that team that makes something memorable. I work on projects like that in my class, such as poster and product design, which required me to think creatively about the design and construction of these pieces, which taught me how to think outside the box and come up with unique solutions. I also volunteer at a local public broadcasting station, creating programs for them to air on tv. This requires the knowledge and skills I have learned throughout my time as a student in digital art classes in order to plan, storyboard, film, edit, and finalize different programs and make them the best versions they can be. In terms of my plan to enter the trades after graduation, I am committed to pursuing a career in digital arts with a focus on film. To achieve this goal, I have researched schools and courses in my area and have already signed up for classes, as well as participated in online courses on my own time. I plan to continue my education in this field and gain as much knowledge and experience as possible. If you were to call me an adult in my life, they would recommend me for this scholarship because they have seen my dedication and passion for digital arts and production design. They would tell you that I am hardworking, responsible, and always eager to learn. They know that I am committed to pursuing a career in the trades and believe that I have the skills and drive to succeed. In conclusion, I am confident that my experience in digital arts and production design, coupled with my creative thinking and problem-solving skills, make me an ideal candidate for this scholarship. With my plan to pursue a career in the trades and my commitment to lifelong learning, I am excited to see where my passion and dedication take me in the future.

As a first-generation college student, I have always had to work hard to achieve my goals. My parents taught me the importance of education and hard work from a young age. But they also taught me the importance of empathy and compassion for others. My passion for film and creating positive change through my work has been a driving force, and I am excited to pursue this passion in college. I am passionate about creating films that spark conversations and inject positive change into the world. I believe that film has the power to educate, inspire, and transform society. I want to use my skills as a filmmaker to address social issues and promote equality and justice, as well as have relatable stories for those who don't get to see themselves through film. One issue that I am particularly passionate about is mental health. I have seen firsthand the devastating impact that mental health problems can have on individuals and their families. I am volunteering at a local public access tv station as a director, writer, and editor on a documentary about drug abuse within my state. The focus is on the mental health aspects of this issue, as well as how the government is treating those who need aid. Through this project, I hope to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and encourage more people to seek help. I am also passionate about equal rights. I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic. The film industry leans heavily on a bias for similar people, and not a lot of light is given to minorities, people with disabilities, or people who are open about their sexuality. I want to work with people who have these experiences through their life that they would never have been able to see related to them on film and give them a platform to tell their story and aid others in the process. I want people to be able to watch my films, see themselves on the big screen, and have characters and stories that they look up to and relate to, all the while creating conversations about issues I am passionate about. I want to use my skills as a filmmaker to create content that raises awareness about social issues and promotes positive change. As a leader for change, I am committed to positively impacting my community and the world. I believe that leadership is about empowering others and working together to achieve common goals. I am always looking for ways to collaborate with others and create a sense of community around the issues that I am passionate about. I love learning about other people's perspectives and helping people see different issues in a new light. I love storytelling, but I also love to listen to stories from people and their experiences with life, giving me new insights into different ways of living. In conclusion, I am a passionate and driven individual who is committed to creating positive change in the world. Through my work as a filmmaker and my involvement in mental health causes, I am working to address social issues and promote equal rights and opportunities for all. I am excited to continue pursuing my passion in college and beyond, and I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship to help me achieve my goals.

As a filmmaker, my goal is to make a positive impact on the world by creating films that inspire conversations and bring about change. I believe that movies have the power to shape people's perceptions, spark discussions, and inspire action. My passion for film began when I was young, and since then, I have been working towards becoming a filmmaker who can use this powerful medium to create positive change. Through my current work at a local public broadcasting TV station, I am gaining valuable experience in producing documentaries and shows that focus on important social issues. Currently, I am working on a documentary about drug abuse within my state, which I believe is a critical issue that needs more attention. I want to use this film to start a conversation and raise awareness about this important issue, as well as provide aid to those who need it. Additionally, I have plans to create a healthy cooking show and a "nature hour" show to promote good health and mental well-being. I believe that by highlighting the beauty of nature, viewing non-stressful media coverage, and the importance of healthy eating, we can help those struggling with mental health issues. In the future, I plan to continue creating films that address critical social issues and inspire change. I want to make films that people can relate to and feel a connection with the characters and stories. My goal for my future is to make films that have a positive impact on society and help create a better world. As a first-generation college student, I understand the value of education and its power to transform lives. I plan to use my education to further develop my filmmaking skills and knowledge and to continue creating impactful films. I have been studying film on my own since I was ten, but going to college and taking classes with professors within this field will equip me with the tools and knowledge needed to create high-quality films that can make a positive impact on the world. In addition to my education, I plan to network and collaborate with other filmmakers, activists, and organizations that are working toward positive change. I love collaborating and hearing other creative people’s perspectives to further my understanding of the world around me. I believe that by working together, we can create a more significant impact and bring about positive change. In conclusion, my career aspiration as a filmmaker is to create films that inspire conversations and positive change. Through my work in documentaries and shows, I hope to raise awareness about critical social issues such as mental health and drug abuse. I want to create a healthy cooking show and a "nature hour" to promote good health and mental well-being. My ultimate goal is to create films that connect with people on a personal level, make them feel seen, and inspire them to take action. I am committed to using my education and skills to create positive change, and I believe that with dedication, hard work, and collaboration, we can make a better world.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
As someone who has struggled with mental health issues throughout my life, my experiences have had a profound impact on my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. Specifically, my journey has led me to pursue a career in filmmaking with a focus on mental health advocacy. When COVID-19 hit, my anxiety heightened to the point where I didn’t return to school. I stayed fully remote for eighteen months. My mental health came crashing down. I found myself in a deep hole of depression and anxiety, with no motivation to do anything. I lost interest in everything and I isolated myself. After a long time, I sought help from my doctor and a therapist that she had suggested. All of us worked on getting me out of this hole I found myself in, through lifestyle changes, regular checkups, and medication. Slowly, I began to climb out. This experience taught me the importance of seeking help when needed and the power of self-care. But it was not weak. Crying to my parents, therapists, and doctors as I told them over and over again--reliving the assault and rape that lasted months--was the strongest thing I had ever done, and might ever do. I found the strength to ask for help. Through my experiences, I have come to understand the critical role that mental health advocacy plays in destigmatizing mental illness and providing resources and support to those who need it. As a filmmaker, I hope to use my platform to raise awareness about mental health and promote understanding and empathy for those who are struggling. I am currently working on a documentary project that explores the experiences of people living with mental illness with a focus on substance abuse in my state, and I hope to use this film as a way to spark important conversations and drive change. Overall, my experience with mental health has shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. It has taught me the importance of seeking help, prioritizing self-care, and using my voice to advocate for those who may be struggling. I am excited about the opportunity to pursue a career in filmmaking and use my passion for storytelling to make a positive impact on the world.

As someone who has struggled with mental illness for several years, I understand firsthand how challenging it can be to overcome these obstacles. However, with the right support, resources, and mindset, it is possible to regain control of your mental health and live a fulfilling and meaningful life. For me, the journey toward overcoming mental illness began with a willingness to seek out help and support. This meant reaching out to friends and family members, as well as seeking professional guidance from therapists. While it was initially difficult to acknowledge my struggles and ask for help, even going as far as keeping traumatic experiences to myself for months, I soon realized that seeking support was a sign of strength and resilience, rather than weakness. That concept was hard for me to get my head around for a while, but with the right people supporting me, it is something I have come to terms with and have told people who come to me for help. Along with seeking professional help, I also took an active role in my own recovery by making lifestyle changes that prioritized my mental health. This included practicing mindfulness, establishing a consistent sleep routine, engaging in regular exercise, and adopting a healthy and balanced diet. I also made sure to avoid substances that could exacerbate my symptoms, such as drugs and alcohol. With these changes, I was also able to enjoy the hobbies and passions I once had again. Going through a lot of traumatic times made me lose everything that I did in my free time for my mental health, and what essentially made me who I am. But gaining back control over my life and proactively dealing with these illnesses had given me the courage and help to enjoy those things again. However, perhaps the most significant aspect of my journey toward overcoming mental illness has been my commitment to understanding and accepting my own experiences. This has involved confronting and challenging negative thought patterns and beliefs, as well as practicing self-compassion and self-care. By acknowledging and accepting my emotions, rather than suppressing or denying them, I have been able to develop a greater sense of self-awareness and emotional resilience. Of course, there have been setbacks and challenges along the way. There have been times when I have felt overwhelmed or discouraged and have struggled to maintain a positive outlook. However, through these experiences, I have learned the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. I have also developed a greater appreciation for the small victories and moments of joy that can be found in everyday life. Overall, overcoming mental illness has been a challenging but rewarding journey. Through seeking support, making lifestyle changes, and practicing self-acceptance, I have been able to take control of my mental health and find greater peace and fulfillment in my life. While there may be times when the journey feels difficult or uncertain, I am confident that with the right mindset and support, anyone can overcome mental illness and live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
    Mind, Body, & Soul Scholarship
As an 18-year-old first-generation college student, I am excited about the many opportunities that college offers. One of the things that excite me the most about college is the chance to pursue my passion for film and explore the many different aspects of this dynamic and exciting field. As a female student in a predominantly male-dominated field, I am also excited about the prospect of breaking down barriers and proving that women can be just as successful and innovative in film as men. However, I am also aware of the challenges that college presents, especially for someone like me who has struggled with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. One of the most important things that I do to maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul is to prioritize self-care. This means making sure that I get enough sleep, exercise regularly, eat healthy foods, and take breaks when I need them. One of the biggest challenges that I have faced in college so far is balancing my academic work with my mental health needs. To overcome this challenge, I have learned to be more proactive in seeking out support and resources. This includes reaching out to my professors and advisors when I am struggling with coursework, connecting with mental health professionals, and participating in support groups and peer mentoring programs. In addition to prioritizing self-care and seeking out support, I am also committed to advocating for mental health awareness and education. I believe that it is important to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and to promote a culture of openness and acceptance. I am also mindful of the impact that my actions have on the environment, and as someone who is passionate about sustainability and climate change, I believe that it is important to take personal responsibility for our actions and to make choices that minimize our negative impacts on the planet. For this, I make a conscious effort to reduce my use of single-use plastics, conserve water and energy as well as make a habit of thrifting instead of buying new items. This gives them a second life instead of going to a landfill and helps my peace of mind on what I am spending my money on and what I am surrounding myself with. By taking small steps towards sustainability, I hope to inspire others to do the same and create a more sustainable and environmentally conscious campus community. Overall, college offers me a unique opportunity to pursue my passions, challenge myself academically, and grow as a person. While there will undoubtedly be challenges along the way, I am committed to maintaining a healthy mind, body, and soul, and to advocating for mental health awareness and education in my community. I am excited to see where this journey takes me and am grateful for the support and resources that are available to me as a college student.

Since the age of ten, I have dreamed of working in the film industry, and I have dedicated myself to learning as much as I can bout the field. Through volunteering at a local public access TV station, I have been able to gain valuable experience while also creating programs that educate and inspire viewers. I understand the power that diverse voices have within the media and how different perspectives can influence others. I plan to shine a spotlight on these voices, experiences, and perspectives to challenge people's thinking while creating a more authentic and compassionate world. Wild Scholarship
As an 18-year-old first-generation college student with a passion for art, I have always been drawn to the world of film and visual storytelling. Ever since I was ten years old, I knew that I wanted to work in the film industry, and I have chased this dream with relentless determination ever since. Along the way, I have explored a variety of artistic mediums, including painting, illustration, pottery, photography, and sewing. These hobbies have not only provided me with a creative outlet for my emotions but have also allowed me to discover more sustainable ways to create things for myself and others. With a major in film, I am choosing to pursue an education in the arts because I believe that film is one of the most powerful mediums for storytelling and self-expression. Through film, I can use my creativity and artistic skills to bring a story to life, connect with audiences on an emotional level, and inspire positive change in the world. In the digital art space, I plan to use my skills to create visually stunning and emotionally resonant stories. Whether through animation, visual effects, or digital cinematography, I want to use my talents to create films that touch people's hearts and minds and inspire them to see the world in a new way. One area of interest to me is the use of digital technology to create sustainable filmmaking practices. As someone who is devoted to protecting the environment, I believe that it is important to find new ways to reduce waste and lower our carbon footprint in the film industry. By utilizing digital tools to create more efficient and eco-friendly production processes, I believe that we can make a positive impact on both the film industry and the world as a whole. Eventually, my goal is to use my education and skills to create films that make a difference in the world. I am excited to see where my creative ideas and the journey of art will take me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to follow my dreams through education.
    Financial Literacy Importance Scholarship
As a first-generation college student, I am extremely aware of the importance of financial literacy in young people, especially students during the time of college. While the experience of college is fun and full of opportunities, having me try new things and meet new people, there is a very strong possibility I could accumulate debt if I don't budget correctly, which will ultimately impede my ability to complete my goals. First and foremost, I have learned how to budget. By splitting my money between savings and a checking account, I have been able to save for both long-term and short-term financial goals. This method is extremely helpful when it comes to college where expenses could fluctuate depending on the time of year. For example, I could be buying books for the first semester, while later in the year I could be paying for extracurricular activities and other unanticipated expenses. But by keeping a close eye on the amount of money I am spending, I am more able to adapt my habits to fit my needs and financial goals. Secondly, I will take advantage of student aid opportunities that come my way, or otherwise seek them out. As someone who is going into the film industry, I understand that a field like this can be challenging when it comes to finances. But I know that there are resources to help students. For example, I have applied for scholarships and grants, as well as a work-study program in order to learn more about the field firsthand and expand my experience, while also earning money for my education. These resources are incredibly helpful in guiding me on the best financial path for my situation. Lastly, I want to be mindful of my spending habits. While it is alluring to spend money on random things I think are cool, I have quickly learned that these sorts of habits can lead to financial difficulties. Instead, I only buy what I truly need, while also searching around for the best deals and checking reviews before purchasing items. By prioritizing my spending this way, I am more able to make sure my money goes further, and avoid unnecessary expenses that could cause financial instability. Overall, I believe that financial literacy and management are vital for a thriving student. By being mindful of my spending habits, taking advantage of student aid resources, and budgeting effectively, I am confident I will be able to execute any goal I set for myself. As someone who is passionate about the film industry, I know that these skills will be crucial in navigating this competitive field, and I am committed to doing everything I can to be sure I succeed.
    Book Lovers Scholarship
If I could have everyone in the world read a single book, it would be “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy. This powerful memoir explores the author's grief and loss after her mother's death, and the pressure she faced as a child star. It also talked about being a young woman in the entertainment industry, and McCurdy’s honest writing style is raw and compelling, sugarcoating nothing. It draws the readers in with her personal story and battle with self-image, eating disorders, and failed romances, while also shining a light on much larger issues of mental health and societal expectations. The pressure that children, and especially women, go through within our society is intense. It doesn’t help when you have a spotlight and camera pointed at you during every personal moment, every struggle, and every bad idea. From a young age, girls are suffocated with ideas on how they should look and act in order to be taken seriously or accepted in society. The pressure grows as they become older, with social burdens that surround their career, marriage, and family. McCurdy’s book is a powerful reminder of the toll that those pressures can take on a person, especially in a culture that often mistakes mental health as a weakness. Throughout the book, McCudry talks about personal experiences that illustrate the importance of being vulnerable, honest, and taking care of oneself. She shares her personal struggles with anxiety, depression, and grief, and breaks the stigma around mental health. She encourages her readers to seek the help and support that they might need, and her story is a great reminder of the importance that self-love and self-acceptance have in your own life “I’m Glad My Mom Died” is a powerful, honest, and necessary book in our current societal climate for the potential it has to change lives. By sharing her story, McCurdy shines the light on important and prominent issues a lot of young people have, and encourages readers to find their own voice and speak their own truth. In a world that often feels overwhelming and isolating at the same time, this memoir is a beautiful reminder of the importance of connection, compassion, and resilience. I believe that everyone could benefit from reading this book and taking its story as a message of inspiration and hope.

As someone who grew up on a family farm, generational wealth holds a significant meaning to me. It means a heritage that had been created by my ancestors in the late 1920s and has been passed down for five generations. It is a testament to the hard work my family put in, and can create a legacy that transcends our own lifetime and allows future generations to thrive. As a first-generation college student, I recognize the importance of education in building generational wealth in order to help those after you. I will use what I learn in college to help expand our business and partake in other business ventures. There are a lot of ideas I have that will help us and the community, and gaining the knowledge I need through college will help me achieve and successfully execute those ideas, and to collaborate with others who are interested in learning. Additionally, I intend to use my education to mentor and support future generations in our family and community, helping to develop the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs. While my career path may not directly involve the family business, I plan to use my success in the film industry to help support and expand our family legacy. This may involve investing in the business or using my platform to promote and market our products, in order to reach a wider range of customers. Additionally, I plan to use my knowledge and success to support and give back to my community, including the rural area where my family farm is located. This can include fundraisers, mentorships, internships, food drives, and so on. Finally, I believe that giving back to our community is an essential part of creating generational wealth. Our family has been fortunate to operate a successful business and live in a close-knit rural community, and I believe that it is our responsibility to give back and help others. Through charitable giving and community service, we can help support local schools, organizations, and other initiatives that benefit the greater good within our community, and hopefully further. In conclusion, generational wealth means building a legacy that transcends our own lifetime and creating opportunities for future generations to thrive. Through a multi-faceted approach that involves expanding our family business, pursuing education, and giving back to our community, I believe that we can create a bright and prosperous future for generations to come.

Television is a technology that has always fascinated me with its power to connect people, share stories, and promote understanding across different cultures and perspectives. The way in which television brings people together, entertains, educates, and inspires, is truly amazing. Television has been an important technology for decades, and it has gone through many changes and advancements since its inception. With the rise of the internet and digital media, television has become even more accessible and diverse, allowing people from all over the world to share their stories and experiences. I believe that television is an inspiring technology that can make the world a better place in many ways. For instance, television can be used to educate and inform people about important issues, such as environmental conservation, health, and social justice. Television programs and documentaries can raise awareness about important topics and inspire people to take action to make a positive impact on the world. Television also has the power to bring people together and promote understanding across different cultures and perspectives. Television programs and series can showcase different cultures, traditions, and values, and help people appreciate and respect diversity. Moreover, television can help reduce stereotypes and promote empathy and understanding, by presenting complex and nuanced portrayals of people and their experiences. Finally, television can also be a powerful source of inspiration and creativity, by showcasing different forms of art, music, and entertainment. Through television, people can discover new talents, artists, and performers, and be inspired to pursue their own passions and interests. Future Is Female Inc. Scholarship
As an 18-year-old first-generation college student, I have always been outspoken about issues related to feminism, mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and sustainability. For me, feminism is the belief in social, political, and economic equality of all genders. It is about recognizing and fighting against systemic inequalities and oppression that disproportionately affect women and other marginalized genders. Feminism is important because it seeks to create a more just and equitable society for all. It aims to dismantle patriarchal structures that maintain discrimination, violence, and oppression against women, non-binary people, and other marginalized genders. Feminism is not just about women's rights; it is about creating a more inclusive and equitable society that benefits everyone. One of the most inspirational people to me is Tarana Burke, who is the founder of the #MeToo movement. Her work has helped to bring awareness to sexual violence and harassment against women and has created a space for survivors to share their stories and seek justice. Her work has been important in changing the narrative around sexual violence and creating a movement that seeks to empower and support survivors. As a female film student, I am passionate about telling stories that challenge stereotypes and promote diversity and representation in the industry. The film industry does not have a lot of female representation, with the top 250 grossing films having only around 19% of directors, writers, editors, and producers being women. My goal in life is to change that. To make a space for women and other gendered people to receive equal opportunities within my chosen field, and make that space safe for them. I am also involved in activism related to mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and sustainability, all of which intersect with feminist issues. I believe that education and advocacy are powerful tools for creating change, and I have sought to use my voice and platform to raise awareness and promote social justice. I have written papers about gender inequality in various situations, and have done research on who is contributing to and against those ideals. In conclusion, feminism is about fighting for equality for all genders. It is about recognizing and challenging systemic inequalities and creating a more just and equitable society. Tarana Burke is an inspirational figure to me, and her work has helped empower survivors and challenge the culture of silence around sexual violence. As a film student and activist, I am committed to promoting diversity and representation in the industry, as well as advocating for mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and sustainability. I believe that education and advocacy are key to creating lasting change and am passionate about contributing to the feminist movement in my community and beyond

Dear Scholarship Committee, I am honored to have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and share with you an experience where I used my creativity to solve a problem for myself and for others. I would also like to lay out my plan for addressing a problem in the future if I had the resources to do so. As a first-generation college student who is passionate about film and storytelling, I have been honing my skills and knowledge in this field since I was 10 years old. But it wasn't until I personally experienced the trauma of sexual assault that I found my voice and my purpose. Out of fear and anger, as well as trying to heal from my trauma, I created a t-shirt design that incorporated my personal story and message of hope. The design was a way to process my emotions and turn my pain into something positive that I had only intended to keep for myself. But I later posted online about my design and the meaning and story behind it, and found a way to help others. The response to the shirt was overwhelmingly positive and I received messages from people who were inspired by my story and found comfort in knowing that they were not alone. This was the moment that I realized the power that art and storytelling had in order to create change and bring people closer together. If I had the money and resources, I would like to expand this project to my major of film. I would create an event that's main event was a short film on this topic, that encourages people to speak out against sexual assault and also helps people seek help if they had experience with it. This event would be a non-profit event that would also provide resources and support for survivors of sexual assault. The event would be a safe space for people to process their emotions and find the support they need in order to heal. The event would also provide educational resources for communities to better understand and address the issue of sexual assault. All of the money earned from this event will go towards organizations that offer support, guidance, and help to survivors. In addition, I would like my short film to encourage survivors to come forward and seek help. This film would be shown in schools and communities to raise awareness and create a conversation around the issue. In conclusion, I believe that my passion for film and my personal experiences have given me a unique perspective on the power of art and storytelling to create change. If given the resources, I am eager to use my skills and platform to make a positive impact on the world and help others who have experienced similar struggles. Thank you for considering my application for this scholarship. I am eager to continue my journey toward a fulfilling career in film and make a positive difference in this world. Sincerely, Abigail Bisson

Dear Scholarship Committee, I am honored to submit this scholarship application and share my journey thus far as a first-generation college student pursuing a degree in film. My passion for film started at the young age of 10 when I first experienced the magic of both storytelling on the big screen and the technical aspect of behind-the-scenes work. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this industry and make a difference in people's lives through my films. I have always tried to go above and beyond in all aspects of my life, whether it be academics or personal projects. In high school, I took college-level classes while also working part-time to help support my family and save up for college. I also spent my time studying things outside of school, like painting, sewing, clothing design, and language learning. I am also an avid writer, and I have completed a 460 paged novel in my spare time. I have also taken the initiative to further my education and experience in the film industry outside of the classroom. I have taken courses, shadowed college classes, read countless books and articles on the subject, and even taught myself basic film and audio editing skills. Additionally, I have worked on several short films as a writer, director, and editor, allowing me to put my skills and creativity to the test and showcase my potential as a filmmaker. My vision for the future is to become a successful filmmaker and make films that will not only entertain but also challenge my audience to think critically about important societal issues. I want to use my films as a platform to raise awareness and inspire change. I am determined to create films that will not only entertain, but also educate and empower. In order to achieve my vision, I am committed to constantly improving my skills and staying up-to-date with the latest technology and techniques in the film industry. I am also eager to collaborate with other artists and professionals in the field to bring new and different perspectives and ideas into my films. I am confident that with the combination of my passion, dedication, and hard work, I will be able to achieve my goals and make a positive impact on the film industry. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my education and continue my journey toward a fulfilling career in film. Thank you for considering my scholarship application. I am eager to join the community of dedicated and talented individuals who are making a difference in the world and contributing to the advancement of the arts. Sincerely, Abby Lynn

As someone who has always been interested in movies and the process that goes into making a film, taking the digital art class at my trade school seemed like an obvious choice. Currently, in my second year of this course, I have learned a lot of fundamental techniques that will be applied to my studies in the film industry. From lighting to composition, color scheme, and balance, all of these concepts that I have learned in my trade class will help me in the future. I knew from a young age I wanted to make movies. I have been in love with the complex and detailed process that goes into creating a piece of art. For years, I spent personal time researching the process of movie making, script writing, lighting atmospheres, and more. I’ve gone to second-hand book sales and bought books about the film industry and the voices behind it, as well as the technical process of making a movie. These classes I have taken for two years are helping me further my education and knowledge about what small details help create a bigger, cohesive picture. It has also helped me improve my eye for things like that. For example, studying color palettes and the psychological feels and reasons behind different palettes has helped me understand why some scenes in a movie give off a feeling without explicitly saying it. Learning about balance within a composition has helped me develop an eye for such techniques found in movies. The way that the tree and house in the opening shot of the movie Knives Out are placed balances out the whole scene, even though they are two different sizes and visual weights within the composition. Even though I have spent time studying with whatever resources I could find about this industry, there is an unconditional amount that I would only be able to learn once as a part of a hands-on experience, things someone can not learn sitting behind a computer screen. In the same way, these in-person classes with a professor who has been in the digital arts field can help me understand things and critique my pieces; a professor at college can help me develop the skills needed to continue on this career path. That is why I am hoping to receive this scholarship -- I plan to live on campus and be able to take advantage of the tools and resources my professors give me. Being able to have scholarships will pay for my housing, making it possible to live there full-time and learn more about this incredible field.

Movies have always played a big part in my life growing up. They were a way to connect with people, spend time with family, learn about the world outside of myself and teach me something new. Some movies are old favorites that provide me comfort when I’m sad, and that challenge my thinking and understanding of the world around me. I believe that movies can provide a sense of hope and inspiration to people, that they can create strangers into friends, and that they can help people find their passion. When I turned ten years old, I went to see a movie called Pan in theaters. That was the moment that I knew I would be making movies for the rest of my life. I went home and watched behind-the-scenes clips about how they filmed scenes, how the costumes were created -- everything I could find out about the process of making this movie I knew. I was so fascinated by the process of making a movie, so entranced by it that all my time was taken up by watching videos about the making of my favorite movies and tv shows. A couple of years later, while revisiting an old favorite movie of mine, I was reminded how much of an impact a film can have. I watched the 1997 animated movie Anastasia with my dad, and we were moved beyond the film itself and into the history of the events that took place. We were inspired to read novels about the Romanov family and to research their lives. We took Russian language lessons, my senior paper was 40 pages worth of their history, and we planned to travel to Russia after my graduation. All of this happened because of a movie we had forgotten about. But watching it again sparked within us something we couldn't have fully imagined. We have our house decorated with traditional Russian and Ukrainian art, and bookshelves piled with books about (and inspired by) the Romanov family. I believe that the films I grew up with have helped me become the person that I am today, and to be able to create something that can do that for future generations is what I live for. I want to have the opportunity to make someone's day better, to be the common interest between them and their friends, and to dare them to think and understand in a way that makes them a better person. If someone watches a film that I worked on and is inspired to learn about something else, or their day is improved --even a little bit-- that would be my proudest achievement.

Since I was young, my father has taught me how to save. It seems like a simple concept as opposed to “financial advice”, but it has helped me a lot. Around the age of ten, my father came home with two mini notebooks and a zipper pouch. He sat me down and explained about saving and spending money, and how important those are. One mini notebook was for each concept. I would write down the amount of money I had, then the amount I was putting into my savings, leaving me with the rest for spending. This lesson I learned has been with me until the present day, just with bigger amounts of money from jobs. I would get a check from my work, then split half in savings and half in spending. By doing this, I have saved a lot of money for emergencies. Something my dad also taught me was that the savings were only for those. When I got lost coming home from a new city, my car was almost emptied of gas, my phone was about to die and night was quickly falling. I was able to use some of my spending money in order to fill up my tank and drive until I found people to aid me back to my hometown. For many of my friends, this is not a luxury they have. I have talked with some of them about money and how they save, and they informed me that they were never taught it. My father helped me understand the difference and uses between saving and spending, something I had grown up thinking was just a normal thing to understand. But my friends and peers did not have someone in their life who would take the time to teach them, and therefore they have little to no money for emergencies, such as the one I was in. Some of them don't even have a savings account. That, coupled with the fact that they are either working only part-time (8-16 hours a week) or fully unemployed, they do not have the resources to help them if they are in need. I have talked to, convinced, and helped some of my friends set up savings accounts for these sorts of events. I am very proud of them for being able to do it. Since I was very young, I knew I wanted to make movies. I have been in love with the complex process that goes into creating a piece of art. Being able to have scholarships will pay for my housing, making it possible to live there full-time and learn more about this incredible field. For the 2023-2024 school year, I expect the amount of money to be spent to finish my schooling will be around $10,000. The majority of this amount will be spent on my housing, in order to live on campus for the full college experience, as well as easy access to the utilities I might need that are provided at the school (i.e, library, recording rooms, equipment, etc.) The money will also be spent on my meal plan, as well as other living expenses that might come about. With the film industry, which is where I am heading, there are a few things I will most likely be required to buy for class. Such investments include different programs and software for class, equipment in order to complete projects based on the assignments given (lighting, audio, etc.), and other school needs, as in the form of journals, books, and additional assets. My money, and how I spend it, are based upon that financial advice given from my dad. To split what I have equally. But this time it is not between “savings” and “spendings”,instead it will be between “school supplies” and “housing”. Any amount of money I receive will be split into going twords the cost of living on campus, and the cost of items or schools supplies needed to compelate my courses.

I have talked to, convinced, and helped some of my friends set up savings accounts for these sorts of events. I am very proud of them for being able to do it. Another piece of financial advice I have gotten came from a video on using money wisely. It was “Live on less than you earn”. Spending your money to be able to keep up with the latest trends, or buy things out of your budget to impress friends is a very simple and quick way to go into debt. It is also a way to lose the money you have, and the money you might need for an emergency. A lot of people have no difference between their spendings and savings accounts if they even have separate accounts for such things. Even more, have issues determining things like wants vs. needs, and lack self-control when it comes to overspending. Living on less than you earn means that people should learn how to budget and how to prioritize their future spending. For example, I get money because I have a job. After weeks of splitting my check between my savings and spending, I finally have enough to buy this new video game that I was looking for. But, I know that I have a car payment coming up, which is going to drain my spending amount down to the point where I can not buy that game. Sure, I could buy the game, but then I will not be able to pay for my car. Instead, I look at what needs to be prioritized and assess from there. The car needs to be paid off and meet its monthly payment. That is number one. If I pay off my car and still want that game, I have to be even more strict and reasonable on how I spend my money until I have enough to pay for the car and the game. That might mean cutting out coffee shops for a bit. Not buying new nail polishes for a while. Then, soon I will be able to meet my car payment as well as have enough to buy that game. Overall, saving money is very important, and it is a skill that more young people should be taught. Budgeting and buying things responsibility are also extremely important, and also should be taught and put into practice.

As someone who had grown up on a family farm, that taught me a lot about hard work, which I believe is what it means to be American. The white-picket fence life isn't complete without physical labor, right? The family farm we have was started around 1929 by my great-great-grandfather, Arthur, and has been kept the place because of people who care for it, after my great-great-grandfather died. We joke that all he had to start was “two cows and a dream”, but that isn't very far from the truth. Coming from Canada, my great-great-grandfather moved to America with his wife, where they worked in his father-in-law's bakery. For a while, they worked there and sold milk to people. On the weekends, Arthur would take his wife for a drive, through different towns. There was a small area of land that was deserted, with a single farmhouse on it. Later on, his wife got very sick. In order to help his wife, Arthur took her to the doctors, where they were told that all she needed was some fresh air in the countryside. So, Arthur took his wife to that old, abandoned farmhouse, where they sat on the porch together, overlooking the land he would soon buy, in order to aid his wife to health. She recovered, and their house was bought in 1929 with two single cows. Then they had my great-grandfather, who took over the farm after his father. After marrying his wife, my great-grandmother and their eleven children lived together in a small farmhouse. Tirelessly, he worked every day to be able to pay for additions to his farm, and eventually, the additions came in 1964, making it the farm and butcher shop that it is today. Before that, they had bought a slaughterhouse miles away from their land. They rolled it on top of logs over a frozen river in the middle of winter, and there they would cut meat on workbenches one day a week for the waiting customers, who were lined up to get their food. My grandfather and his siblings took over when my great-grandfather died in 1991, and they all worked together to keep their grandfather's dream alive, along with my father, David, who is probably the biggest help to the store. This is what it means to be American. To have a dream and aid it into coming true for generations to come. A legacy is what my great-great-grandfather left. One that continues down to me, today. I worked in the store for years with my father, while my brother worked on the farm. Each day I worked, I learned more and more about how much this place means to our community. I met people who came from different states -- different countries -- to get our food because their family traditions wouldn't be complete without it. I learned about hard work and responsibility, a cornerstone in American ideals in order to keep things afloat. Being American means helping your neighbor with kindness and respect, which is what we do every day. A single conversation with a regular customer can go a long way, from what I have experienced. And here we still are. A farm bought out of love for his wife from my great-great-grandfather has become a pillar in our community, and a right of passage of sorts for my family. My family tree and the lives upon it are stories of love, hope, hard work, kindness, and perseverance. My family tree and the lives upon it are stories of what it means to be American.
    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
Mental health was something I hadn’t thought about until I experienced it firsthand. During the height of the pandemic, I chose to stay fully remote during school. For around 18 months, I stayed at home, avoided going outside, and had very limited contact with people. That was when my depression started. I started seeing a therapist, who only became more helpful to me as I had gone through traumatic events that left me diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and PTSD a little while after. Since my diagnosis, I have been dealing with the aftereffects of everything in different ways. I have done research on coping mechanisms as well as looking for signs of things that might trigger me in advance of them doing so. I have created a support group of people I trust whom I can talk to when I need to. I have also become an advocate for mental health awareness. I use my many platforms to speak on the issue and provide people with support. I helped someone with an eating disorder, talking to them and encouraging them (they are doing wonderfully, in case you wanted to know). I even helped a family member -- my father, who has struggled with a lot of the same things as me. Seeing as he was a bit afraid to speak to a therapist, I would listen to him with he was struggling and gave him a multitude of different options on how to deal with whatever it was. A while ago, I was put on medication for my illnesses, and my father was recommended the same as me. He was scared and thought about not going to the doctor, but I was able to talk him into trying it out. A couple of months later, he is doing excellent. Whatever I do in the future, I want to be able to help people the way things have helped me. There was a band I would listen to on days I didn't feel like living, who encouraged me to keep going. There are movies and shows I would watch that would always cheer me up. And becoming a filmmaker, I want to be able to highlight some things that people with mental health issues go through. Not glorify it, in some ways that show often depict it, but show the rawness of it and how to get help. I want people who watch my work to understand that they are not alone. That there are people who are going through the same thing they are, and that this is not the end. “This is not what will define you”, as my mother often says to me during an attack caused by my PTSD. I want to be able to encourage people to get help, like my dad, and encourage people to feel safe, like my mom. My mental health is not something I live with. It is something I live in spite of. So often, I would cry myself to bed, or when I woke in the morning, or during class at school, or in the car. So often, I wanted to crash my car, throw my phone out the window, and not talk to anyone else for as long as I could. But every time those thoughts and feelings entered my head, I acknowledged them, then peacefully sent them away, replacing them with something that I love or love doing. I want to be that something for somebody else. To be the reason they keep going. If I can, that would be considered my greatest achievement.

Film is a creative outlet for me. But it has become something so much more than that. Creativity, to me, means empowerment. My desire is to go to school to become a filmmaker -- a desire I have had since the age of ten. At that time, women only made up 19% of the film industry's behind-the-scenes workers. Out of the writers, producers, editors, and directors -- only 19% were women. I knew that I was going to fight for equality, representation, and empowerment throughout my life. There are not enough of these traits within films, let alone in the film industry. My life’s mission is to change that. To take people off their soap boxes, not because I’m striking them down, but because I am placing them on a grand stage in front of the world. I want to tell stories that enlighten people. That makes them feel an array of emotions. That makes them think outside of themselves. But most of all, I want a product of my creativity to inspire someone. To empower them to speak up. Creativity has always brought me a voice to be heard. For the rest of my life, I will do the same for others. I believe that the films I grew up with have helped me become who I am today, and to be able to create something that can do that for future generations is what I live for. I want to have the opportunity to make someone's day better, to be the common interest between them and their friends, and to dare them to think and understand in a way that makes them a better person. I want to create a film that is inclusive and tells the story of those who are left in the shadows and shows them walking into the light, in order to make people feel like they belong. If someone watches a film that I worked on, and their day is improved --even a little bit-- that would be my proudest achievement.

So I did. Using my tools and experience within my graphic design class, I created sweatshirt designs for survivors of rape and sexual assault. I use my essay and research skills to write papers about equality in the healthcare system and the environmental impacts of the fashion industry. I read and support women who are out there, telling their stories, in order to help raise their voices just a little louder. And for me? That is what I am going to continue to do. During college, and after, I will use my creativity within art, design, illustration, and film, in order to help raise awareness for important issues and events, and raise the voices of those who would otherwise go unlistened. I know what it is like to be forgotten. I know what it is like to be ignored. To fall between the cracks, or slip between the fingers of someone you thought was supposed to be there for you. To be let down in a world where you know you shouldn't even expect much for whatever reason it could be. Because you're a woman. Because you're gay. Because you're Black. Because you don't have a 26-inch waist. Because you're disabled. Because because because. Because it is an excuse made by those in charge to invalidate those they wish to have under them. And in the process, they squash any individuality anyone had left. My life’s mission is to change that. To take people off their soap boxes, not because I’m striking them down, but because I am placing them on a grand stage in front of the world. I want to tell stories that enlighten people.
