I actually lost two very special people in my life. I lost both my grandparents within a year apart from each other. I lost my grandma to cancer and year later my grandpa to suicide. Although they were white they treated me and my older brother as if we were they own. I remember going to there houses almost every weekend to spend time with. They would constantly smother us with love, watching movies, playing board games, eating snacks.
When I first lost my grandma, I didn’t know what the cause of death was since I was little but I then found out it was cancer. Her death hit me and brother really hard but I don’t think it impacted us as much as it did our grandpa. Me and my brother visited him often to spend time with him, but since we were young we never noticed just the amount grief he had since he always had a huge smile on his face.
I ended up losing my grandpa on Halloween, we were going trick or treating when we saw police cars and ambulances outside of their house. I thought he had died due to a heart attack, I found out later in life he committed suicide.
Everyday I miss them and wish they can see the person that I became. I wish they could have seen me play my first basketball or football game in middle school. I wish they could have seen me play varsity football, or watch me participate in track throwing shot put. I wish they could have seen me walk the stage of my high school graduation and go on to college and play football there as well.
There is a lot of things that I wish they could have been apart of. I have learned to come to terms with their passings. They honestly showed what it is like to be a kind person, not because you want something in return but just because that is some you love to do. Out of a lot of messed up people in the planet along with me, they were single handedly the two people I can never see in a bad light. If I was able to see them again even for just a moment I would just want to give me them a hug again, they were very special people to me and I will always be grateful that they were apart of my life even it was only for a portion of it.

Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
A legacy to me means a mark on the world. I think every persons dream is to be remembered for achieving a certain thing. People often want to become the goat of something, or be the first person to discover something. In the Bible, having offspring was a legacy so that a family name wouldn’t die. Men often name their sons after themselves so that their name will be remembered even if it’s only the junior or third. Now a legacy hasn’t been only a good thing that was remembered. People who do bad things in this world will be remembered as a bad person or they may even be forgotten. And if that person ends up have a child that legacy might be passed onto the child and then the child will end up being treated a certain way.
My upbringing in life has definitely been an experience. I didn’t go through hardships such as being in a bad neighborhood, or doing things to get into legal trouble. My parents raised to be a responsible man that will take care of his responsibilities. However my parents did divorce each other when I was around 13 years old. Not having my dad in my life has definitely made a impact on my life, my dad was a role model for me and I shared a deep bond with him and a lot of my character mirrors him. When I lost that father figure role in my life I didn’t really know what to do. I was just entering puberty and I had questions. I didn’t know how to be a man. I ended becoming rebellious towards my mom often because I was just a confused young boy who needed guidance. When I started playing football in high school my coach ended up filling that role for me as a man that I can look up to and learn from. Sure he wasn’t my dad by blood but we grew a father and son bond. He taught me how to handle adversity and help me get out on a path where I can succeed not only in football but also in life.
My parents always told me to live a better life than they did. My parents didn’t have much growing up so they wanted me and my siblings to live a better life and not have to go through the struggles that they have. I plan to break the cycle of struggling in life they have and to live a successful life. Get a good job so that when I do end up having children I can raise them better than I was raised just like my parents did for me.
Dream Valley Landscaping 2025 Scholarship

A time when I failed was actually during this past summer. I was trying to take a summer course for college algebra so that when I got to college for my fall semester I could go ahead and be in pre calculus. I applied to enroll at a nearby community college and one of the requirements to take the course was to pass my TSI. I took my TSI both my Sophomore and Junior year of high school and didn’t pass both times so I gave up. Luckily I was able to into the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor without having to have passed the TSI so I didn’t worry about it. However, I needed to pass the TSI so I can take this course and luckily my high school that I graduated from were doing free TSI testing during the summer. I took the test about 3 to 4 times and I did not manage to pass it any of the attempts but I didn’t manage to keep improving on each attempt. Although I didn’t pass it and wasn’t able to take the summer course, I decided that I felt like I understood Algebra enough and probably just needed to take the course during the semester, pass it then move onto pre calculus the next year.
Going through this failure helped to realize that I need to keep pushing no matter the setback and be able to handle adversity. Although I failed the TSI multiple times, I kept improving my score on each attempt with only missing the score by one point on my last attempt.
In terms of contributing to my community, my church we would make food and feed it homeless people. I would often participate in food drives, donating food that I didn’t need and give to someone who probably needs that food more than me.
I think my greatest strength is my compassion, loyalty, and protective nature. I care about my family and friends a lot and will do anything to protect them from harm.
