      Kayla Nicole Monk Memorial Scholarship
When I was little, I would tinker with objects or toys to make my thoughts come to reality. In school, I loved the subjects that would make me think logically and have the ability to become creative. I would be the designer in every project. Even now, I still enjoy creating things. I am in robotics, which makes me design, invent, and analyze, but it gives me the space to be creative. My previous experiences have impacted me to be an empathic humanitarian and serve my people. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey highly impacted my life. The loud pouring rain and the strong gusts of wind severely damaged our home to the point that caused us to move out and live with relatives for several years. We applied for several assistant programs but were sadly denied. Contractors cheated and robbed us of our money. Because of the contractors, we were practically homeless. Seeing my mother struggle with the house or bills as a child, I always wanted to do more. Leading up to my senior year, my mother, my sole provider, was laid off from her job, which she had had for over 20 years. This situation caused financial hardship again for my family, who had to make ends meet. My mother would work extra hours and sacrifice a lot so we could afford to remodel and rebuild our home. After reconstruction and finally moving back into our house in 2021, it flooded out due to the Texas winter freeze. Since then, my mother has managed to repair our home, and we have moved back home again. While moving multiple times from house to house, I have always kept my head in my books and took many classes that would secure my efforts to obtain my grades in school. During this time, I realized I wanted to become an engineer and an architect. These multiple situations have prepared me for success because my family and I have never given up. I am choosing to study Mechanical Engineering and Architectural Design. I plan to use my education and skills to help build homes for lower-income families, domestic violence victims, the elderly, and veterans. I also want to mentor other African American youths interested in STEM. Nobody in my family is an Engineer, so that I would be the first. I come from a family of athletes, teachers, nurses, and more. I would also be the first in my family to get a Bachelor’s degree. I then want to strive for a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. I consider myself a sensitive, creative person willing to do anything to learn. I have worked diligently to become an honorable student and an example for my two younger sisters to look up to. Although I have been through a lot that led me to this moment, I have learned a lot. This scholarship will allow me to learn even more, and I am thrilled to see where this path will take me.

During this time, I realized I wanted to become an engineer. These multiple situations have prepared me for success because my family and I have never given up. Leading up to my senior year, my single mother, my sole provider, was laid off from her job, which she had had for over 20 years. This situation caused financial hardship again for my family, who had to make ends meet. My mom losing her job impacted me significantly because I wondered how I could afford school. Many fees and debts come with going to college. Many people take out loans and can't pay them back, which causes them to have massive debts. That is also why my mother didn't go to college because of the possibility of debt. As I complete my senior year, I have researched ways to avoid making some mistakes, like applying for grants and scholarships and possibly working through college. I want to be debt-free with my desired education. I will not give up. I am choosing to study Mechanical Engineering. As a young African American woman, I have witnessed many societal issues I'm passionate about addressing. I am passionate about Domestic violence because a jealous Ex-boyfriend recently murdered my Aunt. Mental Illness is real, and a lot of times in the African American communities, we overlook getting help—guidance, and mentorship. I want to open a center that allows children to explore and find themselves. The desired center would be free. This would like to spread awareness and resources for people to get assistance. I am also passionate about helping the youth in our communities. Many kids get in trouble because they lack positive role models, and that would be my way of paying it forward to kids like me.
