The nursing field has always been a part of my life since I was born. I've been going on nursing home floors since I was younger to go see my grandmother who cares for the elderly. She has been an LPN for over thirty years. At the time I didn't know the residents were sick or why they were there but I did understand they needed help. Her passion to make elders happy and enjoy the last moments in their life truly has inspired me to do the same. My mother also decided to become a Registered Nurse back in 2017. She works on a unit in a hospital caring for surgical and telemetry patients. She was the person I admired listening to the stories she shared with us when she came home after her shift, following HIPAA of course. I never understood why she always had a smile on her face when she came home as her days were long and very difficult but I have recently realized the field is very rewarding. During my senior year of high school, I had the privilege to do clinicals with the children at my local middle schools and the local hospital with the doctors and nurses. The children at the middle schools were always excited to see me because they felt I was very sweet, fun and kind to them. Most of them often stayed to tell me stories about their day and we shared laughs about how they didn't enjoy doing their homework. The hospital was a completely different environment where it wasn't all fun and games. The drive these nurses had was a different feeling from the middle schools. There were no laughs or smiles but rather very rapid paced where decisions needed to be quick and teamwork a must. I was blindsided going in not knowing what to expect but to my surprise I learned that I was shadowing my mother on her floor. I was so thrilled to see her and get to know why she loved her job so much. I stayed at the hospital for about two months getting used to the hospital floor and getting a deeper understanding on what my mothers stories were all about. This year I was very fortunate to be there when she was presented the Daisy Award. Growing up with these two important women in my life and getting to work side by side with them grew my interest more and more as to why I want to be a nurse. My passion and the drive comes from wanting to help people who need that extra hand and help that they can't get at home. This drive has influenced me to study the human body, the organs, and everything I should know to become a nurse and give that extra care to patients who need it.
