As a first-generation college student, my experiences have been both challenging and rewarding. Growing up, my family migrated from Mexico and Central America, and my mother, a single parent, instilled in me a strong work ethic and the importance of education. She always made sure that I had the resources and support I needed to succeed in school, and her dedication and sacrifices played a big role in shaping the person I am today. One of the biggest challenges I faced as a first-generation student was navigating the college system and understanding the resources available to me. I had to learn how to advocate for myself and seek out the help and support I needed. Additionally, I faced financial challenges and I am currently looking for work and work-study opportunities to help me pay for my tuition. Moreover, I have to manage my money carefully and I am currently selling products online to make ends meet. As I prepare to enter my sophomore year, I am aware of the challenges that come with the "sophomore slump," where students often struggle to persist in their education. To manage these challenges, I plan to stay focused on my goals and continue to work hard and stay motivated. I also plan to seek out help and support when needed, whether that be from my professors, peers, or college resources. Additionally, I will continue to manage my time effectively and balance my academic and personal life. I am also taking advantage of all the resources that Texas Southmost College has to offer, including tutoring and lab hours. A college education means everything to me. It represents an opportunity for me to break the cycle of poverty and create a better future for myself and my family. It also means personal growth and development, and the ability to think critically and independently. Furthermore, education has played a vital role in my faith and has helped me to understand the world around me and my place in it. Overall, my experiences as a first-generation student have been challenging, but I have also learned valuable lessons and gained valuable skills. I am determined to overcome the challenges that come with the sophomore slump and persist in my education. I am making use of all the resources that Texas Southmost College has to offer, including tutoring and lab hours, and being proactive in finding ways to make ends meet such as selling products online. A college education represents an opportunity for personal and professional growth, and it is something that I hold in high regard. It is a key to a better future for myself, my family, and society as a whole.
