Scholarships are the most sought-after form of financial aid available to student-athletes. They provide a no-strings-attached type of benefits, so students are not required to pay back any money received through scholarships upon graduation. Thanks to the unique experiences scholarships open doors for, all students are encouraged to take advantage of them.
While scholarships have mistakenly been known to offer solely academic and merit scholarships, there are countless opportunities for those who are part of a basketball team. Students who play college basketball or are high school athletes might be eligible for athletic scholarships.
The sport is notorious for bringing people together, and it has been an essential part of American culture for decades. Each year, basketball teams from across the nation at every level compete against each other in hopes of bringing a trophy home for their community.
Around the world, basketball brings excitement to stadiums as supporters rally for their team. In addition to growing communities, basketball players acknowledge the positive influence on their personal growth and ability to work on a team.
For a lot of student-athletes, basketball transcends into a future career goal. Considering that college basketball is the first step in playing for the Professional National Basketball Association (NBA), it is crucial for those students to have the opportunity to play at a university in the NCAA division first.
Because of its financial freedom and ability to open doors to better opportunities, a basketball scholarship can allow qualifying students to focus on the game as well as their future. Regardless of whether it is a full or partial scholarship, it can make a big difference for a student-athlete.
If basketball is a sport you demonstrate commitment to, either through future endeavors or past experiences, applying for basketball scholarships might be worthwhile. In addition to external resources, Bold.org is a great tool to find new and innovative scholarships.
With new scholarships posted routinely for students in high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, Bold.org ensures to advocate for your success.

What Is a Basketball Scholarship?
A basketball scholarship works like any other scholarship, except the agreed-upon terms will center around a certain commitment to the sport. In order to be a qualifying candidate, most student-athletes are required to present their past exemplary sportsmanship skills or legally agree to play college basketball in the future.
College coaches award athletic scholarships to incentivize college basketball recruits so that they are more inclined to join their team. These awards will vary depending on the student and their institution to account for whether or not the college athletics is division I, II, or III.
While basketball scholarships are not predominantly assessed based on academics, grades, and merit, they will still be indicative of your application. Despite receiving an offer from the college coach basketball program, you are still required to submit a formal application to the university like every other student.
Even with a coach's good word, other aspects of the application must satisfy the college's minimum eligibility requirements. If approved, you earn a spot on the team while simultaneously receiving higher education.
For students who are not interested in playing college basketball, do not worry because there are opportunities for you as well. Some donors will offer basketball scholarships for students who play as a hobby or on the side. Not every opportunity will legally bind you towards playing for a team.
Be vigilant to scholarship obligations prior to accepting!
Frequently Asked Questions
You can play college basketball without being in a fully-funded program or receiving a full-ride scholarship. You do not have to get a scholarship to play college basketball. Student-athletes can try out without receiving a scholarship by walking onto a team. As a result, walk-on athletes tend to have a lot of ambition and drive. Walk-ons that are recruited are the athletes that were indeed good enough to warrant the school's interest but were not offered a scholarship at the time. Unrecruited walk-ons are athletes the school never looked at or reached out to. In either scenario, you can play college basketball without a scholarship.
