Bold.org Local Journalism Grant
Faced with intense pressure, it is as important as ever that talented reporters be supported in their pursuit of quality journalism.
This is particularly true at the local level. Without sufficient local journalism, residents go without the information they need to make critical decisions, hold institutions accountable, and cast informed votes.
In 2014, 1 in 5 reporters worked in NYC, DC, or LA, compared to 1 in 8 in 2004. This decrease in local coverage is likely to have a detrimental impact on our communities; local issues are more likely to be bipartisan and bring communities closer together.
The Bold.org Local Journalism Grant supports aspiring journalists, and will cover costs for a local journalism project proposed by the recipient.
Applicants must be current students in high school or at any accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program at a 4-year, 2-year, vocational, or technical institution in the US. The grant will go towards funding a local journalism project undertaken by the recipient in their community.
- Why are you passionate about journalism? Which journalism projects have you pursued in the past?
- What local journalism project would you like to pursue? Explain why this project will be important for your community. Why is this a story worth telling?
- To which local newspaper(s) do you plan on pitching your story?
- If you receive the grant, how would you use the funding?
