Three winners will be announced at a Minnesota Twins game, and each winner will be awarded $10,000 through Bold.org to pursue a higher education
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (August 1, 2022) – Today, catcher for the Minnesota Twins, Gary Sánchez, launches his $30,000 “Swing for the Fences” Scholarship on Bold.org. Sánchez created the scholarship as a way to pay it forward and support underrepresented students in Minnesota. Three winners will be announced at a Minnesota Twins game, and each will receive $10,000 to pursue their education and “swing for the fences” in life.
Sánchez spent the majority of his childhood playing baseball in sandlots in the Dominican Republic. In 2015, he made his debut with the New York Yankees, and by 2016, he was deemed the American League’s Rookie of the Month and Player of the Month. Today, Gary plays under the bright lights of Major League Baseball as a catcher for the Minnesota Twins. Sánchez has multiple awards and American League records to his name. After making a name for himself and achieving his big league dream, Sánchez is committed to using his position to give back to Minnesota.
Gary Sánchez says, “Since I joined the Twins, the people of Minnesota have welcomed me and my family with open arms. We wanted to show our appreciation. In deciding how, we thought the best way was to help local students overcome the financial obstacles that some families face in obtaining higher education. With the Twins and Bold.org’s help, this scholarship will do so.”
All Black, Brown and Asian students who live in Minnesota — whether in high school or college – are eligible to apply for the scholarship. To apply, candidates must visit www.bold.org/scholarships/garysanchez and write a brief essay explaining to Gary what challenges they have faced and how they overcame or are overcoming these obstacles. All applicants must apply by Sunday, August 28, 2022.
Sánchez is part of a long list of athletes and public figures who support education on Bold.org. Other Bold.org scholarship sponsors include NBA stars Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Jae’Sean Tate and Tyrell Terry, MLB player Austin Hays, professional tennis player Sloane Stephens, NFL Wide Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace, Grammy-winning band Imagine Dragons, professional MMA fighter Cat Zingano, actor Terry Crews, singer songwriter Clario and many more.
