Our story

Susan Jeanne Grant devoted 36 years of her life to a career in education, cherishing every moment. She spent 24 years teaching Family and Consumer Sciences at Ingraham High School in Seattle, WA before advancing to the role of Career and Technical Education Specialist for Seattle’s Public Schools. Susan’s influence was profound, inspiring students and colleagues alike with lifelong lessons that emphasized positivity, safety, resilience, teamwork, and so much more. Throughout her career, Susan was recognized for her significant impact with numerous honors, including the Christa McAuliffe Award, Golden Acorn Award, two FCCLA Advisor of the Year awards, and the Washington State Lifetime Achievement Award just to name a few. In 2020, Susan was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. Susan’s strength was unmatched and her battle with cancer did not prevent her from living her life to the fullest. Susan’s passions in life included her children, her husband, sewing, and her career which she continued working up till a month before she passed.

Our goal

To honor her remarkable legacy, the family established the Susan Jeanne Grant Heart Award. A scholarship honors her dedication to education, compassion for others, and the courage she inspired. The scholarship award will be granted to a senior in high school who exemplifies Susan’s core values and is committed to seeking higher education. This individual is invested in their groups and organizations, has a desire to follow a career and technical education (CTE) pathway, and encompasses what it means to grow within your community. The Susan Jeanne Grant Heart Award is funded entirely by 100% tax-deductible donations from friends, family, colleagues, and charitable donors. Susan was one person in our eyes but to her, she was made up and inspired by all those that she interacted with. Out of many, one. Her lasting motto given to her children, students, and colleagues was “Be safe, have fun, and make good choices”. We will all continue having fun and keeping you in mind when making good choices. Thank you, Susan, for all that you were. You meant the world to us, and we hope to continue to share your legacy for years to come.

In memory of Mrs. Grant, our dedicated FHA (now FCCLA) advisor at Ingraham High School, whose guidance and kindness left a lasting impact on my family and me. I’ll always treasure the trip we took to St. Louis in 1996 after I won first place in the state STAR competition as a freshman. This scholarship honors her legacy of inspiring and uplifting students. She will be greatly missed.

Susan was always such a positive person and dedicated teacher! I’m going to miss her. She taught next door when I did my student teaching with Tami and had a great impact on my development as an FCS teacher and in the years to follow as an FCCLA advisor.

Susan was an incredible teacher, CTE Specialist and friend. She lead our FCS teachers and advocated for us in every space that she was in. We shared so many laughs together in the hotels and on buses for FCCLA. She was a positive light that never stopped shining.
