Our story
Matilda’s journey began in 1889 when she immigrated to the United States from the island of Brava, Cape Verde. Despite the challenges of learning English as her second language, she and her husband established their home in East Freetown, Massachusetts, in 1918. Together, they raised 11 beautiful children, creating a family legacy of love, resilience, and faith.
Matilda was a valuable and respected member of her community where her family, community and love of God were the most important things in her life. She was passionate about giving back to the community and when she died in 1960, she generously willed her land to allow for the building of the Calvary Pentecostal Church.
Matilda set the example of what generosity looked like by selflessly giving to her community and allowing them to flourish and successfully meet their goals. She gave of herself and subsequently her gift has benefited thousands over the years.
Our goal
The Matilda do Canto Mendes Scholarship Fund ensures that her legacy of generosity and community support continues to thrive. By providing financial assistance to students with a passion for higher education, this fund honors Matilda’s memory and helps future generations achieve their academic dreams. Through this scholarship, Matilda’s spirit of giving will inspire and empower students to reach their full potential and their educational goals.
