Our goal
My mom, Angela Engelson, was born in 1946 and was the seventh of nine children raised on Long Island, New York in the 1950s and 1960s. She exhibited a talent for art at a young age, and convinced her mom to let her take an illustration correspondence course while still in grade school. However, her family struggled financially. Many girls and young women were encouraged to pursue clerical or secretarial jobs after high school; college was not an opportunity that was available to her.
She went on to marry and have two children. In her spare time, she mastered oil painting (mostly still lifes and landscapes), portraiture, and graphic illustration. She also studied art history and was an avid reader of texts about classic and modern painters.
After a divorce in 1982, she turned her focus to earning a living and helping her children thrive; her painting hobby was set aside for many years. She remarried in 1987 and forged a close-knit blended family. It was a huge source of pride that two parents who had not attended college raised four children who all have masters degrees.
Throughout her life, she felt a sadness to have missed her chance to attend college, where she would have studied art and art history. Angela passed away on December 27, 2024. The week before she died, her family told her they planned to start a scholarship fund in her name to support young women with limited financial resources who wished to major in art or art history in college.
We appreciate your contributions to this fund, which seeds the Angela Engelson Memorial Scholarship for Women Artists. We hope the scholarship will make a difference in the lives of young women who are inspired by Angela's story.
