Corinne Shia Memorial Fund

Corinne was born July 16, 1950 in New Haven, CT. She was valedictorian of her graduating highschool class and as a woman during that time, she did not like the traditional options she was given to pursue after graduation. Specifically, she was told she would not be able to pursue nontraditional careers because of her gender. Perhaps this is where the spark ignited. She went on to receive a B.A. in Experimental Psychology from Connecticut College; an M.S. in Natural Resource Management from Ohio State; a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State; and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from George Washington University - all while raising a family.Her passion for education was undeniable. Education became a tool for growth and contribution. She was able to pave her own way and support herself through her endeavors, using “No, you can’t do that” as a platform to prove herself. Corinne had a successful career as an engineer and program manager, working on countless environmental projects. She was often one of the few females in her profession and was highly respected and regarded. Corinne was dedicated to her work and her impact on the environment and community. As an avid runner, she completed numerous races, including 16 marathons. She had a passion for photography, travel, and was an avid reader. In 2017, she was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This disease caused rapid deterioration of her muscles and nerve cells, all while her mind remained sharp and alert. Without any known cure, Corinne fought tirelessly with a positive and fierce attitude, but eventually succumbed a year later. It is her family’s hope to continue her legacy and passion for education, while supporting a female student who has faced adversity, pursuing her dreams.
