Our goal

We are seeking to raise funds to support the inaugural Assane Konte KanKouran West African Dance Company Scholarship. Mr. Konte, who is the Co-founder and Artistic Director of KanKouran, is the inspiration for this scholarship because he demands academic excellence among Company members, youth dancers and drummers. This scholarship aims to support students who are passionate about preserving African and/or African American art, history or culture. Any African American or Black undergraduate or trade school student who is engaged in extracurriculars or a course of study aimed at preserving African and/or African American art, history or culture are eligible to apply. We seek to raise at least $2500 that will be awarded to a single recipient.

KanKouran West African Dance Company is an artistic and cultural treasure that has continued to provide traditional West African dance and drumming to our community for 40+ years. We need to uplift and support institutions like KanKouran for the benefit of our children and overall community. This scholarship recognizes students who uplift KanKouran's high educational standards while also seeking to preserve Black culture, history and art forms.
