I am very honored and humbled to have been awarded the Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship. Being a student at 41 has both its challenges and benefits, joys and struggles. Juggling the responsibilities of being a wife, mother, and student with constant deadlines has not been easy, but it has been fulfilling. I am reminded daily that I am doing this not only for myself, but modeling for my children that when there is a will there is a way. I am also mindful that my ability to return to school at my age is a privilege that not everyone is afforded. Without my family and community of cheerleaders and supporters I would not be able to make this goal a reality. I am eager to reach the other side of this destination in the hopes I can provide and give to others all that has been given to me, and more. As I prepare to enter the mental health field as a marriage and family therapist, I am deeply moved by the individuals I’ve had the privilege to work with, who have trusted me to enter their fragile and vulnerable worlds. Everyone deserves to be heard, validated, and supported. Thank you for contributing to my journey and helping me to reach my goal!

I wish to express my gratitude to you and your program for your support. Going back to school at the age of 44 was not something I had planned, but I recognized how important it was and chose to take a chance and believe in myself. I am committed to passing on the gift of inspiration to others I work with and helping them to always recognize their potential.
